stop beating up on obama its like getting so old how can you dare talk bad about the best president in us history if mccian won there would be massive wars and the downturn in econmy that obama fixed would have been full blown depression if bush stayd or mccain won obama is a peoples candidate he is here to help dont you guys know hes going to give you tax credits and make school free for your kids i dont get all this hate

Now now now now now- There is a slight possbility he will prove to be the greatest U.S. president after 8 years in office. Until then he has some pretty formidable opposition in Abe Lincoln, Harry Truman, Ronnie Reagan and several more. (possibly not G.W.B.)

lol I just read this in the opening post: "....[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]hailed the election of Barack Obama as a 'historic moment'....".

Someone tell me please when a US prez or, for that matter, any country's prez was elected and didn't make the history books.

Reagan? Is this the same Reagan that sent thousands of troops into El Salvador to aid an oppressive gov't in keeping the heels of its boots on the throats of the public and lied to the American people that things were improving in El Salvador? The same Reagan who swallowed the CIA's "intelligence" that the El Salvadoran gov't was fighting communist guerrillas from taking over?

Don't forget the Iran Contra scandal.

I notice old Dubya is right up there, the poll is a little suspect however as the majority seem to be recent presidents, Jackson and Taft don't appear.

why don't they just grow a pair and say they hate the man for their personal reasons instead of making things up to back their chicken behavior.

I think those that were polled were being honest. Trouble is, I also think they have very short memories and know little about the people that governed them throughout their history. That would apply to other people in the world as they probably only know what their respective newsmedia tells them about the US prezes.
Reagan? The guy was a creep. Right up there in creepsville with G Dumbya.

Not only that, I think the poll grossly underrates the contribution Lyndon Johnson made to American society. Even though he served only one term, I think he was probably the most influential president of 20th century. Most of the legislation he passed is still in existence and had had a profound influence on American society.

Many of his laws, civil rights legislation, Medicare, Medicaid, war on poverty, the Great Society, he set up the National Endowment of Arts, major education funding in his Higher Education Act of 1965, funding of space program (the moon mission), his achievements are too numerous to mention.

Johnson achieved in one term what most presidents do not achieve in two terms. Even today the legislation that he passed is influencing American society in a profound way.

The problem is that his legacy was totally overshadowed by Vietnam War. But he accomplished a lot in his six yeras, more than Reagan, Bush, Clinton etc, ever hoped to achieve in their eight years.

I would easily classify Johnson as one of the greatest presidents in 20th century (Vietnam was notwithstanding). He profoundly affected American society and continues to do so even today.

I'd give Johnson a distant second to Truman.

We have a photog friend who spent a couple years in El Salvador during the great Ronnie's reign (of terror). Some really nasty crap came out of the US involvment, as if it wasn't bad enough there before.

I'd give Johnson a distant second to Truman.

For all his talk and bluster, Truman achieved very little, not one of his initiatives is in existence today. He was also a one term president, like Johnson.

In terms of sheer achievement, influencing American society for decades to come, Johnson was second to none.
