Taking shoes off at peoples homes...

I think (and I'm speculating quite a bit here) that most Canadians are
conditioned to taking their shoes off in their homes, and the homes of
others (even with dry, clean footware) due to Winter lasting in many
places a duration of 5-6 months, and the months that bracket Winter
are wet-shoe weather.....so for the few months that we might be able
to wear our shoes indoors, we've been conditioned not to by the rest
of the year.

Can you imagine someone strolling through your home wearing boots
like mine, even if they where clean? I would shred Hardwood floors,
and they're pretty noisy in a Walmart if I forget I'm wearing them and
go shopping. On ceramic tile, it sounds like you're being followed by
a pack of tap-dancers. 8O :lol::lol::lol:

A bit warm for Golf shoes, though necessity is the mother of invention.
These are steel toed and waterproof almost to your knees. A couple of
bucks puts about thirty hex-head slotted screw bolts into each boot sole
for instant (and really impressive) traction. ;-) :lol::lol:

Kiwi, I love that such a simple question drew so much conversation. I agree with a lot of what the others have said. I would generally expect people to remove their shoes when entering my house but if they didn't, it wouldn't bother me enough to say anything. Once in a while you can catch me walking around my house with my shoes on!

I do believe it has a lot to do with the fact that most of the year our shoes aren't clean enough to walk around the house in and we are conditioned to remove them even in good conditions.

I found that in NZ that the outdoors seemed to be more included in peoples living space. Doors were often left open, windows usually were open to help air the home out and the windows didn't have screens!! People seemed to walk in and out more frequently probably due to the fact that the yard was used more for living like laundry and eating outside. So wearing shoes all the time just seemed to make sense. At the same time a lot of my friends were just as happy to not wear any shoes at all! I was always shocked to see the guys running after sheep in the paddock with no shoes on!

I wouldn't be offended if you wore your coat inside, but you would get a few looks! You should bring some of that fantastic merino wool, that will keep you nice and cozy!

Fashion wasn't my first consideration. At -40c with a wind, they're
one of the most fashionable things that I own. Just as fashionable
in slush up past my ankles, knowing the bottom of the slush puddle
is most likely very slick. :lol:

I put on miles wearing them several times each week in the Winter.
If you're not use to them, you'd better do nine holes, and skip the
full eighteen.They're just over 6lbs per boot. When you switch back
to shoes in the Spring though, it feels like you're almost floating when
you're walking. Good for the heart though, I think (hope?). :lol:

lol Yep. Caulkboots are not good for some floors. I found on some though you can skate. concrete floors with a hard, fine surface are great as are ceramic floors.

We had a neighbor, Old Lou, that had critters living in his house. even the donkeys wandewred in and out. It stopped for the goats, though. One knocked over the woodstove. No more big critters in the house after that. Chickens still had free rein, cats, dogs, too.

A simple look around at the sidewalks and streets here in Toronto will convince anyone and everyone to take the shoes off when going inside regardless of how clean you might think they are.

People spitting all over the place, dogs and at times people pissing every where.
Plus the constant emission of car exhaust blown onto the pavement isn't what should be brought into the home. As long as people take care of their personal hygiene and wear clean socks there is no problem at all in taking them off. I've been tempted to ask a few people who wear sandals in the warm months of summer to wash their feet when they arrive.

Far worse than this though and I apologies for the side track here, are people playing and lounging on the grass in public parks. Please, stop picnicking in my dogs toilet. Thank you. :lol:

Back in my younger days I played Rugby with a Vancouver club. We had a guy on that Rugby team that could clear out a room by taking his shoes off. I think the guy was clean, I mean he showered after games like everyone else but his feet were absolutely toxic. This was thirty odd years ago and I don't know if foot odor can now be cured but it must have been a hell of a handicap for his sex life unless he wore his boots in bed.
