Fla. woman Marissa Alexander gets 20 years for "warning shot": Did she stand her ground? - Crimesider - CBS News

Last Friday, Jacksonville mother Marissa Alexander was sentenced by a Florida judge to 20 years in prison for firing what she says was a "warning shot" into the wall after a physical altercation with her husband, Rico Gray.

The case has set off yet another controversy involving the state's "stand your ground" law, which is under intense scrutiny after the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in February. Critics, including Congresswoman Corrine Brown (D-Fla.), are crying foul.

How, they ask, could a 31-year-old woman in a relationship with a man who had a history of domestic violence, and whose actions did not result in any physical injury, be sentenced to two decades in prison while George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed Martin, is out on bail?

"The Florida criminal justice system has sent two clear messages today," Rep. Brown said in a statement on May 11. "One is that if women who are victims of domestic violence try to protect themselves, the "Stand Your Ground Law" will not apply to them...The second message is that if you are black, the system will treat you differently."

A warning shot, obviously the attacker was not on top of her, or restraining her.. her life was not in imminent danger. She could back away.. with the hand gun pointed at the attacker..

If he then punched her, grabbed her physically, grabbed for the gun, if she had cuts and bruises to show that she was being attacked then, killed the attacker.. she would not be sitting in jail..

...and all this comparing apples and oranges won't change the Zimmerman verdict..

The key words; "imminent danger."

Texas has the same law.. as well as concealed weapons are allowed.

he could have been winking for any reason, we all know it is a photographer/journalist's etc. job to sell pictures/stories, that picture was solid gold... reason for wink not needed because a picture can tell a thousand lies and that is what we want, excitement, thrills, chills, lies and innuendo

Let's see how smart ya'll are.

Does anyone here know how and why Zimmerman majorly f*cked up in the first place?

This all could have been avoided if he didn't break that golden rule.

What was that rule?

None of you geniuses know?

Or perhaps aren't interested in playing your silly game.

Moron was probably not a fair representation. Lying idiot seems more appropriate.

Go dig up the necro posts that have my real opinion, not your fabricated opinion of what I think.

We've been down this road before, on a myriad of other topics. I rather debate with Darkbeaver than play your silly game.

My silly game? Okay, I guess you're no genius.

Come on THINK...what rule of neighbourhood watch did he break that would have avoided all this

He likes dancing......;-)

You're definitely no genius and you're the last person I suspect who could figure this out.

Come on ya f*cking geniuses. How did he f*ck up that lead to all this?

What is your hero missing?

what? so now this is Wizard of Oz? I vote heart, like the tin man or was he the missing brain...fack, just bring on the cake

Did you hear a mouse roar Eaglesmack?

Another none genius who likes to label. It's been my opinion from the start and not your fabricated opinion that you think I have.

He could have walked away day one.

Hey Mad Max:

Apparently I'm the only one who has ever done ORGANIZED neighbourhood watch.

Hmmm...start troll mad...continue troll by quoting ones' self...nobody bites, get madder...implying an entire forum is braindead..mad, mad, mad...guess what I did with the Boy Scouts once?

That is what the racist and race baiters wanted everyone to believe.

They failed.

Zimmerman is free and justice prevailed.

Good grief.
Amazing you deny that? What do you teach your kids if you have any?

Yawn, such emotion.. The trial is over, 12 jurist have spoken, and he is NOT GUILTY of homicide. (bad judgement yes)

Go Colpy.

Actually it was 6 jurors. I begin to understand why I see so much misinformation on this and other message boards, people hear what they want to hear.

Yes, I made a boo boo on the count... 6 jurist. My bad.

That does not negate their decision and any way.. the case went through the legal process.. he was found not guilty and is now free.. that's it, that's all.

I heard on the news late this morning Senator Harry Reid wants the US Justice
Department to lay Federal Charges against Zimmerman. This would be great.
No its not double jeopardy he was tried under Florida State Law and not Federal.
I hope the Fed crucify him.
