That is what governments are supposed to do.

I'm going to play a little devil's advocate so enjoy the ride but hear me out.

Why shouldn't we have the freedom to do what is harmful to ourselves if it is the will of the people?

I know the game. Played it before. The simple answer is that elected governments are supposed to do what is right, not what is popular. Otherwise what you have is really and truly mob rule. Also another reason why the legislative branch must not have total control over the judiciary.

The reality is that, in Canada, we are all created equal. We all have the same rights (well, except for the aboriginals but we're still trying to figure out if they are Canadian or not). Every Canadian has the same legal rights and opportunities. The Monarchy is anti-Canadian. While some people feel that it is acceptable to give people their position based on heredity, this concept is and should be dying out in the 21st century. Heads of state (in fact all leaders) should have to earn their position.

Heard on the radio just yesterday that students of rich parents do better in school than those of poor parents, if THAT is so it begs the question about all people being born equal!

How would one elect a monarchy? President, Fearless Leader, Executive Counsel I could see.

As an American, you should be familiar with some of Alexander Hamilton's views. he eventually consented to a presidential four year term, but primarily supported the idea of an elective monarchy, elected for life but impeachable and with constitutional controls.

How about educated parents are raising educated kids?

I can see how democracy is essentially a popularity contest, but if that is the will of the people then it is just. Government should operate under the guise of what people want, not what is truly good for them.

That doesn't necessarily translate, Petros. Some of the best teachers when I went to school had some of the stupidest kids. It's tough to really evaluate. Some kids just automatically conflict with their parents. But virtually ALL of them take advantage of money.

That is how we got a chinese head tax, Natives being pushed off their lands and not permitted to vote. Also how we got so many unnecessary social programs that have put us so far in debt.

A kid will learn better if it's taught how to learn by it's parents when the kid is pre school. Schools get stuck teaching a kid that is already set in his/her ways by it's parents. Lifetime habits are created right from day one. Maybe it's time we set up a school for parents?

But back to Monarchy.....Shove it!

This is our burden for making wrong decisions.

It is up to us to educate ourselves to make the best possible decision.

Government should exist simply to put our will into action.

The word party has been jaded. A group of MPs working together regionally is still a "party of MPs".

Like a flock of birds or sheep, a herd of cattle, a pack of wolves? I suppose so. but not formally organized parties at least.

Run along JLM, clearly this discussion is over your head..

Seriously, JLM take Cannuck's advice. You should run along. Cannuck only speaks DICKHEAD which is why he becomes an Ignorant Assbag when someone asks him a question. And you clearly don't speak his language.

Seems to me that democracy doesn't work. Proof being that we keep electing dirtbags into office. Getting rid of national parties would be a step in the right direction, but as long as corporations have as much rights as a human and we have corporate lobby groups, we will never have a government that represents the people. Since we can't seem to agree on much of anything or elect a decent government, how does anybody expect that we would elect a decent monarchy? We don't need any monarchy and we need to revamp government to serve the people, not corporate interests. We need to dump the present capitalist system in favour of one that serves the needs of the people, not just corporations and human greed.

But as seen from this thread, people don't seem to be able to see past their noses, as all we have heard so far, is to tweak what we already have even though it is so corrupt that there is no possibility to fix it. The Liberals as just as intellectually and morally bankrupt as the Conservatives and NDP. We need to stop supporting pigs at the trough. We need to set up a national round table to try to redesign government and economic systems that serve us not "them".

No doubt, I'm still trying to figure out what language that is! (But he can be fun to watch)
