This is as bad as an abortion thread and it is amazing how far people love to stick thier nose in other peoples business and find the littlest and lamestpiece of reasoning to justify it (nose) being there!
Just like little ol grannies that love to gossip about others at the front steps of the church on a sunday morning. :D

sure glad I don't go to church, lets me off the hook.

"I don't see why you have a big problem with my opinion. I know its cause you know i got a point and just don't want to admit it."

Well, make up your mind - Do you or don't you know why I have a problem? You're being very inconsistent...no, you're bordering on incoherent.

"you don't need to agree with me you can disagree different."
OK, I "disagree different" then. Feel better?

Absolutely - but there's one small hitch here- it wasn't in public, the public had all left the arena and it was closed to the public at the time. The only ones outside of the players and those involved with the program were reporters. I would concede that it wasn't the wisest thing that they did, BUT the severity of it has been blown out of all proportion. For conformation check White Owl's cigar sales a month from now and watch for a huge spike.

Haley Wickenheiser said, as part of her apology, that no one
on the team 'smokes'. So there is a good message to all of
the young people right there, and because of the level
of sport they play, I am not a bit surprised, I would not
have thought any of them smoked, as it would seriously
affect their level of play.

Now, I know nothing about cigars, BUT, from from what I
have read here, one does not inhale cigar smoke, and from
what haley said, the cigars were 'like' props, and done
for fun.

So, the arguement that they are not setting a good example
for young people doesn't quite fit in this situation.
Young people are not stupid, (well, if they smoke they are)
and I'm sure they know about cigars and inhaling.
Even though I still disagree with them doing what they did
out on the ice, in view of reporters, I do not disagree
with their 'right' to celebrate in the dressing room and
have a blast.

Quite so, Ranchhand (incidentally, good to hear from you again after a long time), it will spark outrage among the Canadians. But then Americans will ask, what is the big deal, they won, they are entitled to celebrate.

The fact is, many people tolerate outrageous behavior from athletes, where they wouldn’t tolerate it from ordinary mortals. If anything it should be the other way round. Athletes should be held to a higher standard, not lower standard.

No.

When I played rec. hockey, we always had beer and pop for after the games. Admittedly our level of competition wasn't any near professional/Olympic but we always has a cold one, sometimes with the guys from the other team, sometimes with the refs, sometimes just our team.

Technically, in doing that we broke the law just like the women did, just like millions of people do in both countries, every time they walk down the street to a neighbour's with a drink in hand on holidays (be it Canada Day, the 4th of July or any other reason to celebrate or enjoy a beverage with others).

If it offends your sensibilities so bad, write the BC Solicitor General aand demand they be given the $25 ticket.

Right on Talloola, I'm sure 98/100 of us here agree with you.

You certainly touched a nerve with your post, Ranchhand, it generated plenty of reaction, you ruffled plenty of feathers (you should be pleased, one of the reasons to post here is to get a reaction).

However, as I said before, if American team had done it, the Americans would have jumped to their defense. Rush Limbaugh and others would have had a field day with it, trashing Canada in the vilest possible manner for daring to question the behavior of Americans. It would have been the stereotype of the Ugly American all over again.

The small voice of Canadian bloggers would have been drowned by a much bigger voice of American bloggers. And that indeed is the problem. Unless and until we start holding athletes to the same standard as other people (or preferably to higher standards), athletes will continue believing that they are above the law, that sense of morality, propriety, ethics does not apply to them.

Well, the reaction I generated by saying that, in my opinion, it was poor sportsmanship seems to mostly consist of calling me names that refer to feces.
Thanks for the welcome by the way. I've been all over many other Canadian sites during my absence and I think I have a knowledge of Canadian opinion on many matters (excluding affairs that are totally internal to Canada) that few non-Canadians would have. Given a topic, I could accurately predict the opinion. This is based entirely on reading news and posts on the Internet. I've never met a Canadian so that can be criticized however seen fit. What I have no way of knowing, however, is whether Canadians actually believe what they post or not.
I'm saying this as an observation made in good faith:
Canadian public opinion , and to a degree even foreign policy, seems to be shaped in large part by 1) A sense of inferiority and 2) a dislike of all things American to the extent that it's bigotry.

I'm just grateful I wasn't in Canada as a known American during the Billy Bob Thorton incident.

I think you need to come on down and meet some of us in person, Ranchhand, you might just get a pleasant surprise. Any sense of inferiority is largely in your own mind, I am sorry to say. As far as dislike of anything American, that too is mainly fallacy. Do not be so quick to judge how Canadians feel about the US and its citizens, most especially when expressed by some obviously mentally challenged people you read on the internet.

Both our countries rock, we just happen to rock a bit better at this time.:lol:

I am very proud of our Canadian womens hockey team for winning the gold. Yes, they should not have celebrated by drinking in public but they just won their country a gold medal, they probably were so excited they didnt think of the repercussion of their actions. I don't think people should be so hard on them!!

Woman's Hockey.....Gold Metal...Celebration....That's the Topic.

This isn't the Anti-American Thread, or the Stop Smoking Hotline.

This also isn't the Left-Right Political Spectrum Thread, nor
the "Arsehololgy" Thread, or the Nappy-headed whatever
Thread....

Woman's Hockey.....Gold Metal...Celebration....That's the Topic.

BUT THEY WEREN'T IN PUBLIC!!!!! They waited until everyone left the arena! Good grief - with all this fuss you'd think that they'd done 'the deed' right after they received their medals. Like I said, there were no reporters, it wasn't in public - but obviously either one of the team members posted their pictures, or there was someone taking pictures and didn't make their presence known.
i don't think they did anything wrong, and it offends me that the powers that be felt the need to apologise. No oner was violent, no one was drunk, it was their private moment to celebrate a victory.

Jack Layton is in the Front Row at the Men's Hockey Play-Off for the
Gold....with a BEER...During the Game...while the stadium is still
open to the Public! 8O

Liquor consumption in Parliament is going to skyrocket in a month.
Think of all the young and impressionable Politicians that're watching
this Game today? ;-)

Hopefully in an hour, Canada & the USA Teams will be out on the ice
together for a celebratory photoshoot once the stadium has cleared
out. Great Game!!! :lol::lol::lol:

This is not a thread, it's a piling on!

Quite so, Spade. And I notice those who think that the conduct of the team was reprehensible are lying low. They put in an appearance once and then shut up.

It doesn’t bother me though (and to critter’s credit, it doesn’t bother him either). I like to visit the thread from time to time, stir things up and watch the mud fly.

Well, let us see what we can stir up now.
