Juan read my Lips: WIN 7
First, lets see how long microsoft is going to support XP. I'm quite happy with it at the moment. The other thing I want to know is
how much an upgrade to windows 8 is going to cost because that is where I'm going.........but not until I have to.

I got Win8 for $70 at Best Buy, and TigerDirect is selling the upgrade online for the same price. Support for XP I think is scheduled to end sometime this year.

My PC died a month ago so
I just replaced my PC to a Ipad....
This is my first apple product
The reason I bought the IPod was to save money, and now after a month with it.

I had no idea Windows sucked that bad until now.
It blows Microsoft right out of the water on every level.

Why drive a ford focus when you can drive a Mercedes Benz for the same price or cheaper.
I had not realized how big the difference would be until now after having done the switch.

Not really, just depends what you want to do with it. I couldn't do what I do with an iPad, screen's too small, virtual keyboards are horrible for anything longer than brief texts, especially if you're a 10-finger touch typist who writes long documents, which I am and do, and there's not enough storage space. My photo library alone is almost 32 Gb and I've still got at least that much more to add when I digitize all the slides and old photo albums we have (try adding a scanner to an iPad). Then there's my music library, my reference library, my video library... and I need space for at least two copies of everything on separate physical media so I can back one up to the other, I'm a total paranoid about backups. I need at least two 1000 Gb disk drives to do what I do with a computer, and no tablet is anywhere close to providing that.

Actually it's Linux and its variants like Android and Ubuntu that blows Microsoft out of the water on most levels, but no system is best at everything.

I wager that Amstrom will find that out soon enough. I see a quad core iMac in his future. For most people who do not do business on their computer (even some who do) a Mac is plenty of computer. Tablets are too restrictive for what I do too (graphic arts and author books).

Just saying. There is good reason why so many love apple products.
They are exceptional. I didn't understand all the fuss over it, until now.
It's something you only understand once you own one.

I've used hubby's iPad plenty, and neither of us really cares much for it, and I saw no real difference between it and the much more reasonably priced Samsung Note, if you're in the tablet market. His iPod or my old Zune, I really didn't see the difference.

Thanks Dexter, That is not too painful. My son has Win8 but he mostly uses Linix. The software for almost all the cameras we use
for astronomy photography are windows based. I picked Win8 so we would both be on the same page sort of...

Well you missed out big time on getting Win8 for cheap

I got it while it was on a launch sale for $40 which was the upgrade to 8 pro from xp/vista/7

Now you're looking at $150 for the upgrade of regular 8 or $400 for the pro upgrade.

Buy Windows - Microsoft Windows

I have used Windoze 7 and it seems pretty stable. A friend just bought a Windoze 8 laptop and he is pulling his hair out. He can't find anything. He has had it three weeks and he still hasn't got it running properly.

If he can't find his stuff by going through the file explorer on the desktop, then on the start screen all you need to do is start typing the name or part of the name of the file or program you are looking for and it should automatically pop up.

Example, if I type with my keyboard "Photo" Photoshop and any other programs with photo in its name will be listed.

Beats the whole start button menu zig zag search for what I want from older Windows. Sure you could make shortcuts on the desktop, but you can still do that in 8, as well as pin on the start screen.

Seems to me Staples have that upgrade for Win8 in the $70 dollar range. I have a bit of time
so I'll keep looking.

Ah well that's good to hear. I just looked at Microsoft's site and they increased the price. The sale was supposed to end at the end of January, so maybe it's old stock they had during the sale they're still selling, but for a wee bit more.

I'd certainly grab it while you can before it does go up. As mentioned, it's an upgrade pack, so if you don't like it at first, you can just go back to your previous OS.

Chances are, Win8 will be the basis of their future OS's and since it's dabbling in the mobile/touch screen era of things, they'll probably just keep updating it for a good while.

With my Windows Phone, the original OS was 7... When I got my phone it was already 7.5. Now it's 7.8 which is a lot like 8, but for single core CPU phones while 8 is a multi core phone OS. (kinda like the difference between XP 32bit and 64bit.. Same thing on the surface, but operates things under the hood just a little differently depending on the system)

So it'll probably end up the same with Win8 for PC's, where they will just fine tune and update the same OS for free, bumping the version number up as they go.

Thus if you get 8 now while it's still cheap, you can just wait until they upgrade to something you are happy with when it comes.

But I think you would be pleased with it once you figure it out. It is a bit confusing at first, but I figured it out in a little less than a week..... I mean I figured everything out. I certainly don't regret getting 8.

Any questions, just ask.

They do say that because Windows 8 was designed for tablets, it uses less resources than Vista or 7, thus can run pretty smoothly on older systems that are running XP that have a hard time with Vista or 7.

I know for me, it boots up fast, programs load much quicker and for games, they run a lot smoother due to less OS junk hogging things in the background.

Yet the OS still does everything 7 could do and still looks nice.

IMO, Win8 is kind of like two operating systems in one.

You have the Start Screen Metro Thing for your "IPad/Tablet" fix (simple, bunch of apps, quickly reference or jump to things, etc.)

And the Desktop which is like the old desktop we all have known since Windows 95.... which ironically is an App itself. I didn't even notice it for the first two months of using Win8, but in order to close Apps on Win 8 (Not normal programs, but those small apps you download) you usually swipe your finger at the top of the screen and slide down to the bottom of the screen to close the app (Or click-drag your mouse doing the same thing)

Yet programs you install like Photoshop, Games, and other Programs, you close normally with the X button (or by double clicking the top left of the window)

But the odd thing is when you move your mouse or finger to the top of the Desktop, you can close your desktop just like an app.

You can also slide your desktop to the side of the screen so you can have an app displayed at the same time.

There's a bunch of odd things you can do now.
