Thanks Spammy, I happened to hit on it as soon as I logged off this afternoon, and it works just like outlook express.[/FONT]
And windows live mail is especially handy because I can access all my mail accounts at the same time.
Another nice thing about it, the mail box I use for bills and business and friends is my <@ntl. sympatico.ca> account, and when I'm out of town like I am now, I can't answer with that account unless I change the smtp address to the server that I'm using at the time, which is rogers right now.
With live mail I can answer using gmail which is not a POP3 server, and show my ntl.sympatico return address in the header so as not to mix up my contacts...lol
It was also easy to import my contacts from the vcards I had brought on a usb stick.
The next PC I set up should be easier...

So far.... I simply hate windows 8.1.................
First, they practically want your life story just for the set-up...
Then I never saw a windows system with so many updates in just a couple of years...
When I updated my old xp box to windows 7 a few months ago it took only a couple of hours with a full format and all the windows updates.
with 8.1......at least 2 gigs of updates with multiple reboots.....then the apps might be ok for an appliance with a touch screen, but with a mouse????
The instructions for a classic start/up. shut down screen, from Microsoft didn't work so I had to install an application for that....
Even disabling the bloody password login that Idon't need, was a pain because they had also changed the procedure for that...
Now I will have to find a new mail program, because 8.1 doesn't support POP type mail which is what I have with my internet server and the mail address I've had for 18 years....
Anyone have a suggestion for a mail program similar to outlook express????

Signed: Frustrated with Microsoft............

POP type mail? What's that?

Also, what did you do to get rid of the "password required to log on after restart"? I showed Spammy how to remove it from when the computer returns from 'sleep', but I wasn't sure if it was done on the same page that I directed him to. The post in question is in the 'Windows 10' thread by Praxius.

Sorry this took a while.....as far as all the steps I went through....I'm still scratching my head from the frustration of windows 8......but now it is fairly manageable, thanks to a program/utility I downloaded called "Classic Shell" Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements
I'm even seriously thinking of installing it on my windows 7 PC's because your start menu is much better organized with it, than the Microsoft menu ever was.
From that menu I went to user accounts and fumbled around there until I got it right....lol

Northern Ontario,
My problem the last few days has been uploading to youtube the bluegrass music videos I filmed in June.
Four times in the last few days a one gig upload would "hang" at around 80% uploaded and nothing I could do to get it going again....a waste of three to four hours every time......
So after trying with my wife's PC, much to her chagrin, me tying up her computer while she played her games on mine and she doesn't like my track ball mouse.....it worked!
Now to prove my conclusion that it was the browser in windows 8.1, I used Firefox portable on a usb stick last night and started an upload, and went to bed...
It uploaded successfully .....
I now have another one going......up to 45% now......keeping my fingers crossed......

Northern Ontario,
Another bridge crossed......................

I needed to edit some more videos to upload to youtube, and was tired of going down to the basement to do it, so I decide to try and install my old "Nero" video editor program on 8.1 to see if it will run....but I can't find it anywhere....either someone borrowed it and I don't remember or I lost it...
So before buying another copy at $75.00 + , To see if it would work on 8.1, I decide to download the same version I had before from Old Versions Old versions of Windows, Mac and Linux Software, Apps & Abandonware Games - Download at OldVersion.com
After I download it, I find out it expires in something like five days, So I decide to try something .....
It has a temporary product key with an expiry date
My fix and it worked marvellously; I went to the other PC that already had the software installed, found the product key, (not hidden at all) , wrote it in the temporary program, went on to install all the updates (which by the way uninstalled the original I had downloaded before rebooting my PC) and when I checked the expiry date? it said "never"

It usually will do updates for just a month, but sometimes it will continue to update a bootleg copy indefinitely....

Yesterday, the first, it updated for hours, I'm assured by the venders (Staples) that the 7 is genuine surplus. The rig was under 200$ and I added four years of insurance. I guess I'll just not bother worrying about it.

I would try to clear it ip. that waiting thing is part of 'punishment' of it not being 'in line'. You should have a number on the box and the automated telephone call should fix it. mine had an -oem- as part of the serial, the new one doesn't.

those multi media programs are expensive. eg.:

What’s new in Nero 2015 Classic

Roxio Creator NXT 3 - DVD Burning - Video Editing Software - Photo Slideshow Software

Media Suite 12 Ultra - The Best Value 12-in-1 Multimedia Collection for Home & School | CyberLink

If you can get a full working copy of AutoCad that works for 30 days unrestricted I'm sure video editing might also be available, if not this site has some freeware or get a Virtual Box and go back to XP (the only way XP 64 runs that I found) or Linux as they have tons of programs at zero cost. You can also find freeware at this site, MajorGeeks.com

Since I had no problems with my Win7 and Vista, I can only assume the updates work similar to XP in that if you set scheduled updates or notify me when updates are available you will get blocked with the genuine copy issue, but if you set it to automatically download and install the updates, you have no issues with the genuine copy block.

XP is at the end of life thing, security issues alone. That probably has more to do with it being a 32 bit OS than anything else, Win7 is the 64bit OS and win* is the advancement to touchscreen 64bit OS, one that probably won't fade away anytime soon. The serial number thing is just in that month so that is part of the new advancement, they have the ability to snoop to find pirated software. Since Linus systems also followed suit they aren't that independent from each other.

In theory I can put an x64 into that pic above. You would not believe how fast and stable it is. It even used the whole GB of ram in this box and it should read the whole 8 this board can support. I haven't seen the ram use go over 2 even with a lot of things running.

Anyway the issue is to get it to boot is getting a drive and partition it as you would for win7 and install that OS, That is boot files in partition 1 and win7 os on partition 2 and then from win 7 run the install for xp64 and let it run until the boot failure happens. You cannot fix that with an 32bit xp boot disk and a win7 will not fix it as it is a different os and it cannot find it's old install so you have to reinstall beside it (windows.old) and as it install it picks up the xp64 install which is on partition 3 of that single drive.
Question, i should be able to delete win 7 (part 2) and expand part 3 (xp64) use the combined space for xp64 and use part 1 as the boot partition to hold the 64bit loader which is what xp64 needs.

Why do all this when I have xp 32 running just fine. My win7 os is 64 bit so the programs are 64 bit (even firefox but especially video cards) and in an emergency xp64 can handle them and I only have to keep one copy rather than a 32 bit and a 64 bit version
Never heard of the starter edition but a netbook did have win 6 starter and it was pretty fast.
