I find it hilarious when people talk about standards and decency where Gerry is concerned...

Oh, and, btw, despite the fact that I'll go to the mat pointing out why the actions of members were hypocritical in this instance, this did crack me up. Sorry gerry. lol.

"Is it just me or have the standards of decency on this forum fallen down from where they once were. Do we accept bad language because it is in a signature? I'm not a prude by any stretch but bad language has it's place but needs to be rare if it is to have any meaning. Gerryh's potty mouth didn't start with the death of MJ. Foul language was normal for gerryh. I for one, would like to see the standards raised a little."

I worked in the mines, cut lumber and worked on factory floors in my younger days. I was totally fluent in profane long before I was fluent in English.

But once I grew up, I realized that a mature and intelligent person need not use profanities, EVER.

Even when some letters are changed in the spelling of a profane word, it still reveals an immature and childish state of mind of the author. I admit I was careless from time to time and let my temper get the best of me.

I find it hilarious when people talk about standards and decency where Gerry is concerned, then turn a blind eye to others. They aren't fooling anybody. They don't like Gerry and are using the language as an excuse.

As far as forums versus real life, there is nothing I have said on here that I would not say to an individual that was standing in front of me. I get the feeling Gerry is much the same way. The same can not be said of his detractors.
Couldn't give you anymore rep, so I'll just say it here...

Good post, bang on!!!

To tell the honest truth, I avoid profanity in my posts for the exact same reason. I don't think it reflects well on the poster.

But.

I also find that behind the scenes PM campaigns don't reflect well. I find pomposity doesn't reflect well. I find being a religious zealot and posting about nothing else doesn't reflect well. I find that turning every discussion into a left versus right debate doesn't reflect well. I find that taking every possible opportunity to bash religion and its followers doesn't reflect well. And I find that being a flat out damn hypocrite doesn't reflect well.

So who do we ban first?

Except for your first two sentences, I could fit that description. But to fit ALL, there is just ONE poster here to come to mind.

However, he definitely should not be banned. Clowns are always a good source of laughter.

I have a strong back, broad shoulders, and a life, I'll take one for the team...;-)

The hypocrisy abounds in here.

I'm a hypocrite. I know I am. Bash MJ, sure he was freak. Bash a fallen Soldier, my fur stands on end. But you know what, those who have served know, that though we may have signed up for adventure, a career, or even just to play with guns and get paid for it. What we trained for, was to protect the people of this Nation, and this Nations, principals. One of those principals, is free speech. It is, IMHO opinion, the cornerstone of our freedoms.

So when someone trashes one of my brothers, I grit my teeth and take it as a big old thanx. He's exercising something the vary Soldier died for.

"And you bring us hours of laughter YJ... "

And no one appreciates your extremely rare and lame humour more than I, CDNBear.

So the feeling is mutual, but thanks for the compliment.

karrie, if and when Cannuck reads these posts (#104 thru 110) he WILL give you the name of the poster who fits EVERY criteria in your paragraph I quoted.

And I guarantee, you will not be surprised.

There's one guy, I used to buy office supplies from, that comes in a close second. For the life of me, I can't remember his name though.

I think you hit the nail right on the head there Cannuck, there's several who are just about as bad as gerryh, but I guess profanity is only one part of the equation, things like tone, and connotation come into it as well as intensity and degree. There's ways of disagreeing and then there's ways of disagreeing. Gerry's way just pisses some people right off (me included) Much nicer just to say "we can agree to disagree"- the point is made and there's no hard feelings.

Okay guys. I know I was less shocked by gerry's posts because I had seen his anger building over this issue across two forums and in conversations off forum.

So, I'll pose the question the way I feel it should have been posed (sorry ger).

Whose death deserves respect, and whose doesn't?

When MJ died, comments like 'finally the freak is gone', jokes about him, flat out rudeness, went ignored. This got under the skin of many people.

So in discussing Farah's death, why does she deserve more consideration?

Personally, I could typically care less about celeb deaths, and I avoid commenting on the lives of people I don't know. But, I figured it might give some of you a venue for conversation without highjacking further threads.

I don't know if it's right or not but the business of celebrities and public figures seems to belong to the public domain and we can speak about them and be immune to the usual laws of slander and libel. I suppose speaking for myself, I still have a way to go in the tolerance department, but speaking truthfully just the sight of Jackson makes me cringe the way I feel when I find a slug under a rock and I know it's not right to feel that way about another human being, but I guess that's part of the reason I'm not perfect. On the other hand Farrah never gave me any of those feelings, actually more a feeling of elation. As far as respecting deaths go, I think it's a moot point, we are all going to die- it's just a change of state.

''we can speak about them and be immune to the usual laws of slander and libel''

Only living people can file that type of charge in court. Estates may file but would have to show palpable damage for those who have died. Such charges very, very rarely stand up in court.

If we're going to start enforcing standards of language, can we start with grammar and spelling?

If you want to swear, go ahead, but at least learn to spell properly. I think we should start PM campaigns, and have people banned because they can't spell.
