Ontario
My daughter in law is an aboriginal and she has a little card thingy,(that's my word of the day, thingy), that exempts her from sales tax. She only gets it out for the big stuff like when they built a fence and deck. That may just be an Ontario thingy though. She does pay income and all other taxes.
Someone else just asked me about that in private, lol.

There are actually prerequisites...Was the fence being built on a Reservation? If so, her use is legitimate.

Was it being built in a municipal subdivision? The use of the exemption is illegitimate.

Like I just said in private...

There are just some services and outlets not available on the Res. That forces us to purchase things "Off Reservation", for use "On Reservation".

Can I go to the Bass Pro and use my status card? Yes.

Can the cashier at the bass Pro ask me to prove my eligibility to do so? Yes.

Is she going to? Not likely. For two reasons. 1, SHe likely doesn't know she's allowed, or the law applicable to the exemption. 2, Does anyone want to risk being berated by someone who wants to abuse the system?

One of the Ontario Governments reasons for making the taxes from car sales collectible at a ministry office, was because of the misuse of this tax exemption.

You know what would make Canada better? If life up there was a musical and people break into song every so often. That would be sweet. I'd have to get in on that.

Awesome. I was wondering when someone would crank up a thread on this.

Canada's pretty good in some areas and in other areas it is lacking. Although it is better than most countries at education (5th in the ratings), health (30th), military (23rd), we aren't as happy as we could be, our politics has become almost ridiculous, as has our homelessness. Our health care had taken quite a beating but it is recovering, I think.
We could be a lot worse, but we could also be quite a bit better.
Other than that, I love the scenery, the people, the seasons, etc.

Aboriginals do pay taxes.......

It sounds like there are some grounds to suspect that not all Aboriginals pay their share of taxes...

Quoting dumpthemonarchy There has to be one law for everyone in Canada. But there isn't. If you are a crown person, cop, work for ICBC and rip off customers, politicians, or aboriginal, the police treat you with kid gloves. My house is not off limits for the police, yet a house on an aboriginal reserve is. The police are corrupt because they are not enforcing the law without fear or favour.

You bet...

I was recently stopped by the OPP, because someone reported that I had a huge sniper rifle in my car. When they asked me what was in my car, I told them straight out the list of contents, which didn't include a sniper rifle, but did include contraband smokes for my friends/customers...he didn't even bat an eye.

Given the fact i make 15 bucks on a carton, I can clear an easy 500 a week, tax free, on a good week. I like it when they don't care. By the way, it isn't illegal for me to sell them, it's illegal to move them across Province and International boundaries. I only sell name brands, so I support the issue you raise with those sweep up factories.

Canada seems great and lovely but the system of governance is a bit complicated to me.
Speaking on Canada , i should talk about Canadians too,
as far as i see , people are very nationalist and friendly .

Don't forget that our gov't also takes a lot of our tax money and just blows it on crap.
