Someone else just asked me about that in private, lol.My daughter in law is an aboriginal and she has a little card thingy,(that's my word of the day, thingy), that exempts her from sales tax. She only gets it out for the big stuff like when they built a fence and deck. That may just be an Ontario thingy though. She does pay income and all other taxes.
There are actually prerequisites...Was the fence being built on a Reservation? If so, her use is legitimate.
Was it being built in a municipal subdivision? The use of the exemption is illegitimate.
Like I just said in private...
There are just some services and outlets not available on the Res. That forces us to purchase things "Off Reservation", for use "On Reservation".
Can I go to the Bass Pro and use my status card? Yes.
Can the cashier at the bass Pro ask me to prove my eligibility to do so? Yes.
Is she going to? Not likely. For two reasons. 1, SHe likely doesn't know she's allowed, or the law applicable to the exemption. 2, Does anyone want to risk being berated by someone who wants to abuse the system?
One of the Ontario Governments reasons for making the taxes from car sales collectible at a ministry office, was because of the misuse of this tax exemption.
