I understand the system and entitlements, I worked in healthcare for ten years. You will find many healthcare professionals that feel the same way I do about our system.

So, do you just want an answer to the question you posed then? I would give you one, but I suspect that you really want to change the system and not simply ask the question, "What is wrong with a two tier health system?"

I will return to one of my previous responses. Are there any agencies or groups that are working to change the present healthcare structure to your satisfaction? If not, you should start one.

Are you referring to me? The only time I went to an ER was for appendicitis. ER's cost $400 just to get registered.

I do want to change it but it's an uphill battle when people believe they're getting free stuff. Bread and circuses is what keeps the proletariat dumbed down.

WRT to your post, humans are fearful of change. Especially if it's something that they do not understand.

For example, look how long it took to create nurse practitioners, or allow pharmacists to administer flu shots? My father was a pharmacist. He had a far, far better understanding of drugs, their effects on the body, interactions, etc. than any doctor I ever met. That was his profession. Long before drug stores advertised that they checked for drug interactions, my dad would phone doctors and advise them on prescriptions he received that were potentially harmful to a patient.

We are slow to change. Then of course there is the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Ontario College of Pharmacists that you have to get onboard. These groups don't like "unqualified" people poking around in their affairs.

It's usually the nurses that want change while doctors are complacent.

I'm sure we both have stories about them that would shock the general public. When I was younger, I golfed with my father and many doctors almost every week. They talked shop, naturally, but I was always fascinated to hear their billing stories. Especially the discussions about fees charged when a GP referred patients to a specialist. Get out of family medicine and become a specialist!

It's always good to make more money, but the way they talked, most doctors felt that they were being hard done by with the OHIP billing rates. They were never getting enough. It wasn't about providing care. It was about making more money.

I'm all for immigrants coming into Canada and I understand they are vital. What I'm not for is abuses of our system by people that don't live in Canada and only come here for their free healthcare and to receive a pension payed for by the Canadian taxpayer, these abuses are more common than you think.

Some of them might qualify for OAS, but they have to live here several years to qualify for that. Also if they are landed immigrants they would have to qualify as immigrants that Canada wants. Check out the application form for immigration and see if you would qualify.

You may think you're only paying $400 or $900 in health premiums because the government tells you so but you're really not. You're actually paying a lot more. That $12,000 is just a percentage of my tax bill that I've allocated to my healthcare charge.

I've already posted a link above for what immigrants cost the taxpayers. At last count it was $23 billion dollars. That's a whole lot more money than they've actually paid into the system.
