As the Conservative leadership campaign approaches what now seems certain to be Pierre Poilievre’s coronation, progressives (?) are unnerved by the huge crowds of all ages he is attracting across the country, which point to an expanding Conservative base.
This is something that keeps coming up. There's little doubt the libs and the left are getting a little worried.

THere's much to indicate that when people Who don't know much about him get a chance to actually hear him or meet him or listen to him speak that they form a much more positive opinion of him. Until very recently his ability to reach crowds was extremely limited and the vast majority of people haven't heard of him. Now that he has the parties funding behind him and the public stage as leader his ability to reach people is going to be considerably higher. They are worried he could go viral so to speak and do some severe damages to their structure long-term

I have appreciated his style (& that of Michelle Rempel) in the HOC for a long time now in debate with various MP’s.

My favourites are PP interviewing JT on the WE Fiasco, & Michelle Rempel debating with Lizzy May in the HOC (the Fart in the Room).

Sure, but you are a bit of a political junkie obviously and so am I. So we've heard of him in our familiar. But the vast majority of Canadians simply don't pay attention to politics other than to scan the occasional headline. And to a degree that was a serious problem for sheer and Erin.

But PP Tends to know how to get out there and in people's faces a little. He is getting exposure with the general public more so than many other politicians do. If he can take that to the next level and really get known by Canadians over the next few years (or at least between now and the next election) then it could be a major problem for the liberals and even the NDP.I think that they are very scared that not only might he win a very strong majority if his popularity goes viral, but that it could set the stage for the liberals being out of power for 10 years and for all of the popularity of the far-left woke programs they have been pushing to come to an end and fall out of favour permanently.

We will have to see if he's got what it takes spend doing so far and wider audience

Trudeau addressed speculation about his political future behind closed doors at a cabinet retreat in Vancouver, according to several sources with knowledge of the discussion.

Just-in ahead of the meeting in which the Liberal leader declared he’s sticking around, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, a long-rumoured aspirant for the Liberal leadership, tried to dismiss a journalist’s question about a news report she is considering leaving politics and may be angling for an international position, possibly as NATO secretary general.

Freeland didn’t definitively say “no” on whether she was interested in any other jobs. However, the NATO secretary general position is now held by Jens Stoltenberg, a former Norwegian prime minister, and his current term has been extended to the end of September 2023.

Two sources said Trudeau’s declaration to his cabinet members came in the context of framing the coming months as a time when Canadians are facing troubled times in the face of economic and global headwinds, and urging them to work hard?

He said he believes the Liberals’ plans will lead to prosperity beyond the immediate challenges, and that he was energized by the issues ahead. He made clear he also believes those plans are key to the next election win — a win he intends to lead the party to.

But as ministers met to prepare the government’s agenda for the fall and discussed how to confront a resurgent Conservative party set to select a new leader this weekend, Trudeau made clear his intention is to continue to govern, not set in motion a Liberal leadership race before 2025 when a deal with the NDP to ensure stability in the minority parliament will expire.

His government is expected to start making good on some of the promised elements in that deal (pinky swear!) such as dental care for young people, and more housing assistance, in the days ahead.

So I guess the question now is when is the next election. No point in calling the leadership convention if he plans a trigger an election within the next 18 months or less.

Election pandering?
Normally i'd say no in and of itself - but this is a really odd time of year to announce that. Normally you'd do it at the start of a session or the like so it gets the most attention, people are barely paying attention right now. But with the ndp announcing it right beside them, what possible excuse could they have for calling an election right now?

Maybe it was Singh wanting to force one by dropping the deal knowing there is oil money flowing at record levels.

The cost of government is driving up the cost of living. This tired and out-of-touch Liberal government has doubled the country’s debt, adding more debt than all prior governments combined. Inflationary taxes going up has only made things worse.

Now, they plan to triple the carbon tax on gas, heat and everything else.

There’s no way around it: Justin Trudeau’s government is the most expensive one in Canada’s history.

The result is that families downgrade their diets to cover the 10% year-over-year jump in food prices. Seniors delay retirement and watch their life savings evaporate with inflation. Thirty-year-old adults — who did everything we asked them to do — got degrees and worked hard — are trapped in 400 square foot apartments or their parents’ basements because home prices have doubled under this government.

We have a government that doesn’t provide the basic services it is supposed to, while coming up with complex and damaging programs. Canadians don’t need a government to run their lives. We need a government that can run its own passport offices.

Canadians need a Prime Minister who hears them and offers hope that they can again afford their homes, their bills, their food and a secure retirement.

Trudeau is going to get eaten alive by this guy.

Anything can happen, but I’m hoping you’re correct. Trudeau is nothing if not divisive and he’s got a track record of being able to divide the country to his Benefit repeatedly regardless of his divisiveness and ongoing repeated scandals and hypocrisy and “ lessons that all Canadians should learn from…”…

This is interesting all by itself:

The Liberal caucus gathering is taking place just days before the House of Commons resumes sitting after the summer recess. Various ministers this week have signalled that the government’s fall priorities will include affordability measures aimed at lower-income Canadians, gun-control legislation and a suite of bills dealing with new regulations for the internet in areas such as promoting Canadian content and curbing hate speech.

Even though the Liberals and the NDP (the non-coalition coalition) voted earlier this year to extend hybrid sittings adopted due to the pandemic that allow MPs to participate virtually in House of Commons debates and votes, the FULL Liberal caucus meetings this week are occurring without virtual option. Previous Liberal caucus meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic have included virtual participation.

So what’s different this time?
1) It’s just the Liberals & not those other Damn Dirty Apes so that don’t have to worry about exposure to Peons and Parliamentarians???
2) Pierre Poilievre is now official leader of the Conservatives??? No more pussyfoot games?
3) The COVID 19 pandemic and it’s rules and precautions (ArriveCAN?) are no longer needed at this point?

You have a full in person meeting when there's really sensitive things to discuss because unlike zoom it's really hard to make a recording of an actual caucus meeting, so it's harder for anything 'official' to be leaked.

It's going to be interesting to see what the first polls that come out after PP won say and how those results affect the lib strategy

While speaking with reporters, Government House Leader Mark Holland was asked why his government supports the continuation of a virtual Commons Woffering that option for its own caucus meetings.

Mr. Holland said the House of Commons committee on procedure and House affairs will be holding a study in the fall to review the hybrid system to determine what changes should be made. He said he’ll be bringing forward his own recommendations.

The Official Opposition Conservatives have been very critical of the hybrid Parliament, saying it reduces accountability by allowing ministers to appear virtually in the House of Commons or as a committee witness.
The rest of the article is some panicky quotes for various liberals about Pierre Poilievre….& The guy has been the leader of the conservatives for less than 72 hours now…

They were scared of him before, but after THAT result and THAT speech... they know they're in the deepest of deep crap and PP is going to be out there pretty quick creating his own image in the minds of those who haven't heard of him and they can't let that happen.
