That is a bit of a misconception. For the most part the hippy movement of the sixties was populated by middle class and upper class kids who were disenchanted with the American/Canadian dream. Doing your own thing was about stepping out of the status quo and away from what everybody else expected us to be. It was a search for a new way of being on the planet.
Yes, there were a lot of free loaders, just like today, but there were many who just wanted out of the nightmare of Vietnam, cold war paranoia and crooked politics.
Yes, and the Carter family were an important part of the growth of country
music as well. They had hundreds of songs in their home, which they had
written and put music to, all their own, and later many others sang that
style as well, very basic country songs, that came from their poor roots, and
time spent together entertaining each other.
Hank Williams 'hung' out with many black musicians in his day, and his songs
reflect that, too bad he died at 29, he was just getting started, he was so
gifted with the written word, but so troubled in life.
Even Elvis combined blues,country and black soul, and it came out in his
own style, rock and roll, although, bill haley was actually the first rock and
roll singer, that I can remember.
Pat Boone was a fake and boring singer, in my opinion.

The latest info I am seeing on this issue is that the second autopsy is confirming that
Michael was a junky.
Tracks on both arms.
Tracks on both his thighs.
Fractured ribs.
Emaciated.
No food in his system.
Morphine and Dilaudid in his blood stream.

These past icons left us songs, tunes, melodies, lyrics that we still whistle, sing and doodle and end enjoy.
Name a SINGLE song that Michael Jackson screeched that would bring back similar memories. Sorry, Moonwalk does not cut it.

Pretty decent lyrics, although the profanities reflect a very, very small mind. And when was he EVER any closer to the working class than Donald Trump?

The person from the list who gets the least recognition is George Harrison. I thought he was the best songwriter of the bunch. When the Beatles split up and Lennon, McCartney and Harrison went solo I thought Harrison's work sounded more like the Beatles. His influence is all over the Beatles tunes that were credited to L&M.
Yukon Jackie, what law says popular music must always be politically correct? I would venture to say there are more people on this planet who can relate to street than there are people who can relate to tea parties and silver service.

Kreskin, creating and performing are quite different things. Sometimes a creator of a song is also a great performer of same. But most of the times, the creator thinks that just because he wrote a great song, he can also perfom it. MISTAKE!!
Look at a great songwriter (all the songs he wrote) and totally lousy performer: Gord Lightfoot.

Since this thread is about Michael Jackson, I'll say that he was a great songwriter and a performer at the same time. A lot of the songs he sang were written, produced, performed and choreographed by Michael himself. This does not require a debate, because millions upon millions around the world agree with that.
