Trump tariff tirade has MPs united across party lines, urging calm

Trump's biggest mistake was to misunderstand human nature. I can tell you that at least some Canadian MP's agree with some of Trump's ideas in principle, yet his actions push them away too. To take an example, Maxime Bernier is a strong supporter of ending supply management and supports more free trade. Under normal circumstances, if given the opportunity, he certainly would dismantle supply-management. Yet even if Bernier were PM and most of Parliament supported him, even he'd have a difficult time supporting supply-management in the face of a trade war with Trump since it could mean losing face. His intellectual side would be telling him to lower tariffs and end supply-management anyway for our economic benefit while his emotional side would be telling him to not give the impression of having caved to Trump's demands. In other words, Trump would make more difficult for a PM to lower tariffs. Painting a person into an emotional corner without giving him an opportunity to save face is not an effective negotiating tactics as that puts pressure on all parties involved to dig in their heals.

Oh, damn, my poutine bill's gonna skyrocket!

Doesn't the US produce enough potatoes, gravy, and cheese curds of its own?

Actually, if Canada starts to impose import tariffs on US food products (which would be a stupid move on the Canadian government's part), would that not reduce the price of food for US consumers at the expense of Canadian consumers?

Perhaps there's a sane solution to this impasse that should be tried to save a lot of shit and bad feelings on both sides while ensuring a more or less fair settlement. Put the solution to a 3rd party disinterested arbitrator that is acceptable and trusted by both sides. I think it's pretty clear they are both bull headed and neither one will back down one iota.

Trump says he’ll punish ‘the people of Canada’ because of Trudeau’s news conference

WASHINGTON and OTTAWA—Escalating his attack on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, U.S. President Donald Trump is now pledging to punish “the people of Canada” economically because of the post-G7 news conference in which Trudeau criticized Trump’s tariffs.

“That’s going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada. He learned. You can’t do that. You can’t do that,” Trump said Tuesday in Singapore after meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Trump repeated the vague threat in an interview with ABC.

“I actually like Justin, you know, I think he’s good, I like him, but he shouldn’t have done that. That was a mistake. That’s going to cost him a lot of money,” Trump said.

Canadian leaders responded with restraint. Trudeau briefly addressed the latest barb on his way into Tuesday morning’s cabinet meeting on Parliament Hill.

What jumps out from between the lines so even the dullest dullard can see it, are the words "if he persists"

Fukk the US and Trump. The US is going down the tubes - end of Empire epic and Canada will get suck down with them unless we cut ties to the biggest anchor in the world. We'll be like a life boat being sucked into the wake of the Titanic unless we cut loose from that ship of fools. There is a whole world out there to trade with so, ya, fukk Trump and the US.

I might have a little respect if Trudeau would have said that stuff to Trump's face not behind his back at a press conference.

I guessed you missed the previous multiple announcements from Trudeau stating that he would defend Canada's interest. It's old news, but Trump just needed someone he thought he could bully.

So JT made it seem like Trump signed onto the communiqué and tried putting words into Trump's mouth thinking he was outside of ear shot. No wonder Trump got pissed at JT

The Liberals have played Trump completely 100% wrong.
All virtue signaling and gender crap and trying to play the tough guy
against a guy who loves to double down and hit back even harder.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

What the hell was this wonderful 'communique' all about anyways? I have yet to hear anybody explain it.
"

Way too much gender and environmental discussions, rather than trade and NATO 2%

Yes, that's what the Liberals did, and now all Canada is going to pay for it.

You're forgetting the Golden Rule:

He who has the gold makes the rules.

This isn't a new thing, the Liberals have been screwing up with Trump for quite a while now.

If you want to play with a hyena you had better wear a suit of armor. Trump is a world class asshole and Canada should stop playing with assholes. Dump Trump.

Actually if the truth be known, Trump is probably having a lot of fun at Trudeau's expense. Chrystia Freeland is a smart woman but I don't think she's thinking outside the box! She's going to be a nervous wreck before this is concluded.

That's probably the 3000th time you've made that point & I don't think Trump is as worried as you are.

Here's how you play Trump. Just send him a private message indicating that the government of Canada would look favourably upon the establishment of one of Trump's businesses in Canada and he will completely shut up.

I'm not worried about Trump. He's a piece of shit. It is his brainwashed followers that are scary. They remind me of the Walking Dead.

does anyone really think that Trump is not an estrogen demented old man who is best ignored?

ANyone that cares about the economy.

don't be silly.

All international foreign relations are conducted in full public view.

roflmfao.

TrudOWE and his Merry band of clowns keep missing the boat. Instead of pissisng and moaning about the US slapping import duties on Canadian products, all of which go to the US government we shoule be placing huge export duties on all products the US needs. Then the duties go to Canada.
