Either way, it was not only shattering to the country (especially the South, which is only fair), it was also the end of war for fun and the start of bloodbaths.
All those men joining the US Army and CSA before the war is over. Both sides marching off to Manassas for the first and many thinking it would be the last battle of the war and they'd be home for Christmas.
I'm somewhere between the two. Fiscally conservative but fairly liberal on social policy. The main thing. Is that I do a lot of volunteer work in my community instead of expecting the government to do it all for us.
The war between the states was about a lot more than slavery.

Either the Rebs were rebels and traitors, in which case we had every right to kill them, or they were entitled to withdraw from the United States, in which case they made war on the United States by firing on Fort Sumter, and we had every right to kill them.

Regardless . At the time the south thought they had to go to war , they did and lost . If they hadn't lost this conversation would not be happening .Trying to erase history will not change it . Btw unlike you I am defending no position , and am just commenting on forum . In 1939 many people thought the Nazi's were the next best thing to sliced bread .

We don't always put up statues to important people in history. There are no statues of Hitler or Mussolini anywhere in Europe so far as I know. The problem with statues of former Confederate generals is that they were the South's way of saying "Our cause was just," which it manifestly wasn't, and they also served as reminders that the racist philosophy that these men fought for was still alive.
Schadenfreude feels so good everyday when I read all the butthurt in the posts from the Trump-hating delusionists.
