If the government gets into the business, just like the lottery, its marketing will be plastered everywhere and legally too.

Legalizing marijuana is fine if that was the intention . However I think we are trying hard to criminalize it at the same time as legalizing it . We are proposing draconian penalties with no idea of the impact . Any person convicted of any marijuana offence will be unable to travel out of country for life

What they appear too be attempting is to make it legal for Big Pharma to sell pot but no one else including growing your own.

That would be funny in a perverted way. The government will be advertising pot but has banned tobacco advertizing.

Of course: the government's not into the tobacco industry. Haven't you noticed that LCBO's, Lotto ticket counters, etc. enjoy far more advertising that tobacco? And what's the pattern? The government has an interest in the former industries but not in the tobacco industry. It's obvious. That's why it's best for it to stay out of the hands of government like tobacco.

As for not allowing people to grow their own, that would be foolish. I'll put myself in a pot addict's shoes for a moment. If we all must buy our pot from a shop, then that increases demand for those shops, so more shops will be present around town, and so more store front windows to tempt me.

Now, if I'm legally allowed to grow my own, then I can choose to not do so. But if everyone else is doing the same, then there will be few pot shops in town to tempt me.

Now what happens if I can't restrain myself from growing my own? Well, maybe some kind of self-exclusion list whereby I could voluntarily add my name to such a list that would then make it a criminal offence for anyone to sell or give pot or a pot plant to me. Only problem with that though is that then we need an ID scheme. Either finger-print or passport-scanning I suppose. If the Feds can work with the provinces, maybe drivers' licences too. All that would mean is that the shop would need to ID each potential buyer to ensure he's not on the self-exclusion list.

With all the cannabis fans we have on this forum, Trudeau should embrace the legalization of that good stuff so that we can have at least one thread that praises him.

Nope, not big Pharma at all and you can grow 4 plants per household.

It's easy to get 18-20 Oz from 4 indoor plants.

Big pharma wanted to get in on medical cannabis. Not sure how those businesses fared.

The government rakes in a huge amount of money on tobacco sales every year.
The government also isn't interested in what pot smokers want, all they can see is a new revenue stream. Nor do they care about quality or perhaps more correctly different qualities that different strains have.
In this part of the country where pot may as well have been legal for the last 40 years many people either grow the strain they like or buy from the same farmer on a regular basis because they get consistant quality. Not the same for the commercially grown street pot which is mostly what the government will have to compete with.

Several drug store chains are gearing up for sales here.

Heard a discussion on late-night radio about this very topic. Seems that the government may not get the revenue they think as "private entrepreneurs" can provide MJ/THC far cheaper than the government. Also, (apparently) marijuana affects people in different ways and I heard some truckers admit to using it while driving because they can "focus" better, this in spite of current anti-drug Ad's running that state that it is a fallacy that people can function better under the influence. Either way, we are heading into murky waters.

Since we seem to have issues with getting drunk drivers off the roads, what makes the government think they (we) can deal with people under the influence of drugs not so easily detected?

I have no clue what is going to happen and I doubt anyone else does either. Having said that, I wonder what the stats say in Colorado and Washington about driving under the influence. Must google it....

I heard an RCMP drug expert interviewed on the radio a month or so ago . He stated that there is no way to effectively test for marijuana impairment , yet claimed marijuana related deaths on Colorado highways are up 20% since legalization . How he squares that circle he never said and the interviewer never asked .

If you want to grow marijuana at home for personal consumption, by all means. Just hide it from public sight and I don't care. That should be legal. The moment you show it in public, off with your head.

Good luck with that! It is legal here in Massachusetts and you can smell weed everywhere.
