Blue Jays fan hurls beer can, nearly hits Orioles outfielder making out

A fan attending the Blue Jays' wild-card game Tuesday night in Toronto threw a beer can at Hyun Soo Kim, nearly hitting the Orioles outfielder as he was about to make a catch.
In the bottom of the seventh inning and the game tied 2-2, Blue Jays batter Melvin Upton Jr. sent a long fly ball to the warning track in left field. As Kim was settling under the ball to make the third out of the inning, the beverage came crashing down from the outfield seats.
Fellow Orioles outfielder Adam Jones ran to Kim and began pointing and yelling at the Blue Jays fans.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter came out of the dugout and spoke with the umpires about the situation, but order was restored as no further projectiles landed on the turf.

Most baseball pundits are predicting a Cubs, Red Sox final. I'm sure a lot of traditionalists are hoping for a Cubs victory after 108 years of frustration.

If the Blue Jays can put together run of consistency they could be there... but it's really been an up and down season.. they'll have to look like the comeback kids we saw in last night's game against the Orioles. It's possible, they can be brilliant.. but not likely.

If Jays can't win it, I will cheer for Indians. I cannot bring myself to cheer for the Cubs.

Perhaps it was the smudging ceremony performed by an young woman on the field long before the gates had opened and who might have gone unnoticed had it not been for a reporter who happened to see her and later reported it in the media. Perhaps it was the open roof - a first for the Jays in the post-season. It may very well have come down to the Oriole's manager inexplicably deciding to leave Jimenez on the mound instead of sending for his best closer Britton. Whatever it was that sealed the fate of the Orioles and prolonged the season for the Jays, it was a wild-card game that no one watching or listening will soon forget.

It had everything from high drama to low drama - the latter being when some drunken bum decided it would be fun to throw an can of beer at an Orioles outfielder narrowly missing him. Apparently the police have a photo of the perp and are waiting a bit to see if he or she will do the right thing this time and turn themselves in to accept their punishment.

It was a pitcher's duel for much of the game with only 7 runs combined for the entire game.

Gibby's choice of the starting line-up of pitchers was just about perfect even though many including myself questioned his use of Stroman to start in lieu of Liariano. After Marcus was solid through 6 innings the call went to the bullpen and Brett Cecil took to the mound. Cecil got a ground -out then walked a batter before giving way to Joe Biagini who made short work of the last two batters. Jason Grilli with a little help from the outfield retired the Orioles in order. Then it was Roberto's turn again retiring the line-up in order. Roberto came back to start the 10th forcing a fly-out before he gave way to Fransico Liariano who made quick work of the next two batters. Liariano returned in the 11th and burned through the order barely giving the batters a chance to catch their breath - he was masterful.

The Orioles gave as good as they got right up until the final fatal pitch - the very first pitch thrown to Eddy by Jimenez with two runners on base. The Orioles catcher knew it as he rose from his crouch and headed to the dug-out without once looking back. Eddy knew the moment the ball left his bat. The fans went wild. The dugout emptied, the bull-pen emptied and Eddy walked the parrot into history being only the 4th batter to win a do or die game with a walk-off home run. It was a far cry from the Edwin Encarnacion who looked close to tears as he left the Blue Jays dug-out for perhaps then the final time, after the Jays lost to this same team in their last series together.

Eddy will go down as one of the most beloved players in Jay's history and if this win didn't convince the powers that be to sign him again next year - they need their heads examined. Eddy is a treasure for this team. It's not like they don't have the money especially after a season that once again saw Roger's Center set the best attendance records in baseball and let's not forget what they are making off the sale of merchandise.

Side note: At one time or another over 9 million Canadians tuned into the game last night with viewership averaging out around 4 million. Well done Canada. Thanks to Tim and Sid for that stat.

Jays have announced ALDS starters:
Game 1: Estada
Game 2: Happ
Game 3: Sanchez
Game 4: Stroman
I would have done it:
Game 1: Happ
Game 2: Sanchez
Game 3: Stroman
Game 4: Estrada

Also both games 1 & 2 will be daytime weekday games once again.

Alleged Blue Jays-Orioles beer tosser ID'd

By Joe Warmington, Toronto Sun
First posted: Wednesday, October 05, 2016 09:33 AM EDT | Updated: Wednesday, October 05, 2016 10:13 PM EDT
TORONTO — Since Tuesday night, Ken Pagan has been the most wanted man in T.O.
Toronto Police issued a photo Wednesday afternoon of the man they identified as the alleged beer-can tosser at Tuesday’s Blue Jays playoff game.
The photo is of Pagan, who was at the game in the section where the can was tossed and in videos of the incident on social media sites appears to toss something onto the field.
He spoke with Toronto Police Wednesday night and made arrangements to turn himself in. Pagan has not yet been charged.
He is also an employee of Postmedia — and formerly Sun Media — an award-winning journalist and passionate baseball player and fan with an encyclopedic knowledge of the game.
On Wednesday night, Pagan said he’d been advised by his lawyer, Frank Genesee, not to speak about the incident but did suggest the police may have it wrong.
“I was drinking out of a cup,” Pagan told Postmedia, and suggested Twitter photos that show him after the can was tossed clearly indicate he had a cup in his hand. “I’d love to tell you what happened and my story ... but I can’t say anything.”
Genesee said his client is a “good guy” but “needs the benefit of legal advice” before he comment further.
Pagan, who was off work Tuesday night, has "been identified as possibly the person who did this,” Genesee said. “All I can say now is he’s going to co-operate fully with the investigation.”
The beer can tossing controversy, as it has become known, occurred in the 7th inning of wild-card playoff game between the Jays and Baltimore Orioles.
After Jays DH Melvin Upton Jr. hit deep to the outfield, Hyun Soo Kim caught the ball when a beer can flew out of the stands from the 200 Level outfield seats and narrowly missed him.
The incident was an act of utter disrespect and put a black mark on what was an incredible game, and elicited headlines and outrage not only across this city, but across North America.
The Toronto Sun issued a $1,000 reward to anyone who could identify the “loon ball,” as he was characterized by Mayor John Tory.
Pagan said he was badly rattled by the “firestorm” and “finger-pointing” that raged following the game.
“I have no idea what is happening,” he said, but in passing, added it would be nice if the $1,000 Sun reward went to the Jays Care Foundation charity.
“I would like to see that happen,” he said.
Those who know Pagan were “shocked” by the allegations. He’s known as an “easy-going” and responsible editor by those who work with him, and as an athlete who loves baseball and “respects the rules of the game.”
The incident itself drew immediate condemnation from the Toronto Blue Jays.
“The Toronto Blue Jays would like to express our extreme disappointment for the incident that occurred during last night’s American League wild-card game at Rogers Centre, involving an object being thrown onto the field of play,” said a release.
“Throughout this season, we have witnessed an incredible level of fan engagement, with a passionate and loyal fan base that extends across Canada. On the heels of one of the most competitive and exhilarating baseball games in our club’s history, it is extremely unfortunate that the irresponsible actions of one individual would detract from the game on the field, and tarnish an otherwise memorable night.”
They also said how sorry they are as an organization.
“We would like to offer our sincere apologies and regrets to the entire Baltimore Orioles organization, its manager and players, as well as Major League Baseball for this embarrassing incident,” said the Blue Jays statement. “The safety of our fans, staff, players and visiting teams is paramount. We’re cooperating with the authorities to identify the individual involved, and the individual responsible is not welcome back to the stadium.”
Going forward there will be changes as well.
“We will also enact heightened security measures and alcohol policies that will ensure the fan experience and safety of everybody involved,” said the release. “We hope the focus will remain on the exciting play on the field, and that our fans will express their passionate support for the Blue Jays while demonstrating a level of respect and responsibility that has made Rogers Centre one of the best atmospheres for families and fans of baseball.”
The Jays later said they’ll ban bottles and cans from coming playoff games.
Mayor Tory earlier called on police to track down the beer can tosser.
”I wholeheartedly support every single effort our police service and the Toronto Blue Jays undertake to track down this irresponsible person and use the full weight of their authority to demonstrate how totally unacceptable we find these actions.”
And the weight of this story was not just local.
Major League Baseball also said it “wants officials in Canada to prosecute the fan who threw a beer at Baltimore outfielder Hyun Soo Kim during the seventh inning of the AL wild-card game.”
“We are working very hard to locate the individual involved,” baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred told Associated Press.
He added from a “deterrent perspective,” it’s important to make sure that the beer tosser is prosecuted.
“It’s all anyone can talk about here in the U.S.; I can’t tell you how much damage that did to the Toronto brand, again,” said Dave Thom, a Torontonian who now lives in New York.
Meanwhile, the manhunt — for now — appears over.
Toronto Police released this image of a man suspected of having tossed a beer can on the field at Rogers Centre during the Blue Jays-Orioles wild card game Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016.

A group of Toronto Blue Jays fans in the United States has bought a Facebook ad to say sorry to Baltimore Orioles fans for a beer-can tossing incident on Tuesday night. André De Pape, originally from Toronto but now living in the U.S., told CBC News that he and his friends were going to take out an ad in a Baltimore newspaper to say sorry, but thought a digital apology would be more effective. The ad, which has reached about 80,000 users, is geared toward Baltimore Facebook users. It ran on Wednesday.

"We had a discussion about the possibility of taking out an ad and today decided instead to do the 21st century version and ran a digital ad," De Pape said Wednesday.

"It has been nice. There has been a lot of positive response to it, a lot of Jays fans chiming in and expressing similar sentiment, as well as Orioles fans who seem to appreciate the sentiment, as well."

The ad, which cost about $200, features an Orioles player standing next to a Blue Jays player with their backs to the camera. It says the group is embarrassed by the actions of the beer-can thrower — "one classless individual," as the ad says — in the bottom of the seventh inning during the American League wild card game at Rogers Centre on Tuesday.

The Facebook ad features an Orioles player and a Blue Jays player and a simple text apologizing for the beer can throwing incident on Tuesday.

"Real Jays fans know that this kind of behaviour has no place in the game," it reads. "It soured a win against worthy divisional opponents, and we wish your fans and team well."

De Pape said the actions of the person who threw the beer can at Orioles' outfielder Hyun Soo Kim do not represent the majority of Blue Jays fans.

De Pape and his friends, all members of a private Facebook group, pooled money to pay for the ad. Whatever money is left over will be donated to charitable organizations run by both Major League Baseball teams.

The group designed the ad, posted it on its page and asked Facebook to target it towards Baltimore users.

De Pape said the ad is simple in its design but the message is sincere. He described it as "just a little message that we wanted to get out there in the world."

He said the ad lets Orioles fans know that true Blue Jays fans believe the beer-can throwing incident is inappropriate and reprehensible and no player deserves to be targeted by debris.

"They are a wonderful division rival. We love playing the Orioles every year, multiple times per year. They have a wonderful ball park, great history," he said.

"From that standpoint, absolutely, we are looking forward to continuing our playoff run. My friends are still very much fans of the Baltimore Orioles, as well."

Game 1 of the ALDS series will be underway in just over an hour or so depending on all the pre-game ceremonies. I'm looking forward to some good ball with no shenanigans at all. Of course The Star Telegram in Ft. Worth is not at all ready to put the bitter rivalry aside. It's front page carried a large photo of Odor's punch to Joey's jaw and beneath that a smaller photo of the famous bat flip. The heading: 'Hey Bautista are you ready to mess with Texas and Odor again?' Sheesh

Meanwhile the Jays are trying their best to downplay the situation and the Rangers are also being low key.

Roberto Osuna is on the roster but Gibby, when asked in a media interview, said that they want to give him a bit more time. Roberto says he's ready to go - we'll see. I'm for giving him another day at least.

If they are up by 1 in the 9th ... what do you do? I would only put him in in traditional save situation. 1 inning max.

I have no doubt after listening to Gibby should that situation ensue, Roberto will be in for the save.

I was listening to Jamie and Greg in the pre-game show and Greg took a strip off Roberto. Apparently, when the teams were warming up on the field, Roberto went over and hugged Odor. Make of that what you will. I am sincerely hoping it was a gesture of reconciliation though I don't know how Joey might feel after hearing about it....................oh the drama!

No runs, one walk for Jays top of the 1rst

Marco.....gets the first batter on a strike-out........second batter flies out to Pillar....last batter grounds out to first. 3 up, 3 down for Estrada - good start kid

Russel gives Cole's arm a fair bit of exercise before striking out. Tulo flies out to center. Pillar hits one to the infield and is called out at first but not after a challenge to the call. Hard to tell from the vids - looked like Kevin's foot hit the bag as the ball hit the glove.

FPS...........nobody covering first base and easy out slips through the hands of the Jays on a ridiculous error
First out on a high fly ball to Zeke
Marco gets 3rd batter on strikes .............then gets the 4th batter to ground out - Rangers leave a man on base

Cole walks Carrera with one away..............Russel flies out...............wild pitch advances Zeke to 2nd..........Josh launches a rocket over the head of the 3rd baseman, Zeke makes it home.........Donaldson's makes it to second and is ruled safe by the ump but it is under review...................and the call stands!! Yee Haw............with Josh in scoring position, Eddy comes to the plate - facing 2 and 2 and he gets a single that lands him on first and Josh on 3rd.

Joey misses on strike 1, ball 1, ball 2, fouls one to the seats, fouls another one, fouls another one.........and he gets one up the middle scoring Josh and landing himself on first, Eddy advances to 2nd.........all this with 2 away..........seems we are back to that 2 out luck the Jays seem to have at times

Russel Martin looking at 2 - 0...........fouls the next one back........takes a highball inside that almost gets him....and then is issued a walk.............we're only in the 3rd and Cole is not having a good time out there

Tulo takes the first pitch swinging for a strike..........then a ball inside....fouls the next pitch.....then gets another ball........fouls off.......then hits a 3RBI triple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kevin at the plate takes a ball then fouls back................takes another strike.........then blops one right to Cole for the final out but not before the Jays go ahead 5 - 0

1 away on a ground ball to Josh and then the out at first
Gets the call strike three by the ump but the ball was way outside the box - 2 away
Easy fly-out to Pillar and it's an easy inning for Marcus

Marco has a nice pitch count going into the 4th.............not so much Cole who has been the beneficiary of a multitude of foul balls by the Jays...........be interesting to see how long the Rangers leave him on the mound

Cole still on the mound to face Upton who after hitting a foul to right follows that up with a nice little homer over into the stands

6 - 0 Jays

Zeke flies out to right
Travis makes it to first on a single after an error by the Rangers..........then a wild pitch gets away from the catcher and Devon makes it safely to 2nd and into scoring position
Josh gets a nice single that easily scores Devon and that is it for Cole after allowing 7 runs in 4 innings...........bye Cole

Eddy flies out to center for the - 2 away
Joey flies out to left and the inning is over

7 - 0 Jays

Tulo with another fine catch gets the out at first - 1 away..................Melvin gets the high fly ball from Beltram for the 2nd out............the 3rd out comes on a ground out to Travis.............Marcus has only thrown around 31 pitches so far..........looking good kid.

Martin pops one to the Ranger's 3rd baseman for the 1rst out
Tulo lines one into right center field for his second hit of the game
Tulo advances to second as Kevin grounds out to first - 2 away
Melvin out at first - 3 away

Marco gets 3 straight fly-outs and walks off the mound having given but one hit in 5 innings

Zeke is issued his second walk of the game to lead off the batting order for the Jays
Devon hits into a double-play - 2 away
Josh hits a single to the left field that he hustles into a double to land safely on 2nd
Eddy flies out the back wall for the last out of the inning

Rangers get a base hit to lead off the order after Kevin uncharacteristically drops the ball
Marco has a bit of trouble with the second batter then finally gets the strike out and Martin throws to second for a double play ...........has a bit of trouble with the next batter but finally catches him looking for another strike-out

And we are off to the 7th

Joey leads off the order with a walk to first...........which brings the Ranger's pitching coach to the mound for a wee chat
Russell's out on a foul fly just off 3rd base
Tulo hits into a double-play and that's that

Marco gets the first out, gives up a single then gets the next batter to ground into a double-play and that's it for the Rangers in the 7th

Kevin goes out on a foul fly to the catcher's mitt
Melvin out on a grounder to the 3rd baseman
Little old Zeke finds himself back on base again after a single to center-field
But Devon pops out to first for the last out

Marco is starting the 8th

Marco retains a shut-out through 8 innings and talk is about him staying in for the 9th. Truly remarkable performance by Marco and boy has it made things easier for Gibby and the bullpen. No need to put in Roberto in at all.

I feel like pinching myself and asking is this really happening......are we really or the verge of shutting out the Rangers ...........at home? Hell just beating them would be a victory.

Josh gets one down for his 4th hit of the game
Eddy gets one down and lands safely on first..............ooooh.........the Ranger fans are booing ......
And Joey bats does it again with a 3-run home-run...............ain't it wonderful ................isn't this sweet.........I'm lovin' it

10 - 0 Jays

Russel strikes out - 1 away
Tulo on base again.........
Kevin pops out - 2 away
Melvin takes a walk

I honestly don't know what's up with homeplate ump...........his strike zone seems to move on a whim at times......neither team seems to know where it will be at times at times.

Zeke grounds out to first for the Jay's last out of the inning

Marco's first pitch of the inning and it's a triple for the Ranger's batter.................oh dear
Next pitch is a ground ball to first that gets the out but scores the runner and there goes Marco's shut-out. Gibby is out to the mound and Marco talks the long walk back to the dug-out as Jays fans rise to give him a standing ovation acknowledged by a tip of his hat. Wow! What a game for Marco Estrada.

Ryan Tepera is on the mound for the Jays with 1 away................... 2 away after a short hop to Tulo at SS and in time to Eddy at first
A high fly ball to Upton on the warming track and that's the ball game. What an outstanding performance by the Blue Jays. Estrada will be the talk of the baseball world as will this win by the Jays.

Oh ..........the final score was Jays 10 - Rangers one little measly run...........heh..heh, heh....
