The fee itself wasn't the problem. It was who profited from the fee, so scrapping the fee entirely wasn't the correct solution.

That's probably why Ford suffered a mutiny from some of his buddies in council.

And who exactly set up this problem?

One of the councillors supporting the ban sits on Ford's executive committee, so your partisan bluster might be a little off. Ford should have left it as, the retailers would have continued to charge the fee regardless of dictation from city hall.

Its not partisan. I just thought and still think the bag fee was the stupidest bylaw implemented by an even bigger idiot . And I thought so until last night. This one is stupider.

And I agree Ford has lost complete control of city council. They are obviously all muttering about on whatever agenda they feel is appropriate. The one thing Miller did do was fire all the people who disagreed with him from the get go and kept a significant number of councelers in his pockets. Ford has completely failed at this and it will make his term ineffective to say the least. And we will be stuck back with another David Miller clone next election which will not be good for the city.

Just like the incandescent light bulb ban, this ban, too, will be rescinded. Orillia also banned the plastic bag and they caved to public outcry.

I disagreed with the bag by-law as well as it basically was just a city mandated revenue stream for business, but scrapping it without any way of forcing business from continuing the practise seems pointless.

Rarely is a Toronto mayor good for the city, it's just a cyclical rotation of ideologues and buffoons.

Ford McMurray Alberta has a plastic bag ban as well, still intact a year later.

The funniest part is that Ford is suddenly blaming the voters for letting this happen. That's how many people felt about him being elected.

I must say, it makes him look like more of a fool.

You can never cram the millions of dollars of revenue genie back into the bottle. It just never works that way.

What!?! They show up to the office, what do you want them to be effective too???? My but you big city folk are sure picky. ;)

I make Ghillie suits out of it now. Fun stuff.

Always a fetching look.

At least paper had some structure. I hate reaching for loose tomatoes way up at the front of the trunk....

That's honestly why I use the re-usable ones. They have a shape like a paper bag so you can pack it better but it's much easier to carry.

Toronto is ****ed.

Over the last couple of days this is what I've gotten out of TO: (in descending order of outrage)

1. They gave a job counseling kids to an ex-con that served a sentence for dealing WHILE he was under house arrest awaiting trial for sexual assault.

2. They decided to let Fags for ****ing Over Jews march in the Gay Pride Parade that is funded with tax dollars.

3. They banned plastic bags.

What do they put in the water?????

You reuse bio-bags?

We use the reusable fabric bags. They kind of lose their shape when you throw them in the washing machine, but you can pop them back into shape and hang them to dry.

I must say, it makes him look like more of a fool.

It sounded to me like he was encouraging people to get involved in the process. Hardly foolish.

i wonder if anyone has been to the toronto solid waste authorities website to read what the law says?

how does it make sense to prohibit the retailer from offering you a biodegradeable alternative?

why did they not earmark the fee towards something useful right from the start?

someone wanted to use the $$ collected by the stores to replace trees expected to be hard hit by the ash borer worm this year. well, ok, if you're going to replace them all with a heartier tree.
this town is expensive in some of the most ridiculous ways i have ever seen.

Ford vows to trash plastic bag ban

TORONTO - Mayor Rob Ford wants to trash Toronto’s new plastic bag ban by the fall.

Ford vowed Thursday he will do everything he can to throw out the “ludicrous” bag ban council approved Wednesday night.

Councillors voted to ban Toronto retailers from offering single-use, plastic shopping bags to customers effective Jan. 1.

In the wake of the bag ban vote, the mayor was on the offensive - slamming the ban on talk radio and branding it “the dumbest thing council has done.”

Despite the fact it was championed by a member of his own executive, Ford didn’t pull his punches while speaking to reporters at City Hall Thursday.

“We’ve done some dumb things but I think banning plastic bags, this is just outright stupid never mind dumb,” Ford said.

From his conversations with the city solicitor Ford said he expects a report back this fall that will outline the problems with the ban.
“She thinks we won’t be able to win this in court and that we shouldn’t have done this in the first place,” he said.

“I think when that gets to the executive committee, some of the councillors that voted in favour of this ban will reverse their vote and I don’t see this ban going through as expected Jan. 1.”

“I don’t think we’re going to win in court, neither does our legal staff,” he added.

Although he applauded the fact council voted to scrap the five-cent plastic bag fee Wednesday, Ford vowed he will fight an outright bag ban.

“I’m going to do everything I can (to undo this),” he said. All I can do right now is make sure the report gets to executive in September and take it from there.”

During an interview on AM640, Ford blamed the ban on residents not being involved enough in municipal politics.

“It’s the people’s fault. Sometimes I get so frustrated because the people are just sitting back listening but they don’t pick up the phone, they don’t go down to City Hall, they don’t ask questions … it’s frustrating,” he said.

Councillor Josh Colle disagreed with Ford’s assessment the ban was the “dumbest thing” council has ever done.

He said “as an outside observer he’s seen a lot of dumb things happen” at City Hall.

“Maybe one of the dumb things was bringing it back to the floor and it was a bit of a Pandora’s Box that was opened,” Colle said. “We got to a policy position in a speedier way than we thought but when you look around the world Italy has done it, Ireland has done it, Seattle is doing it, L.A. has and so it seemed like we were kind of dickering around.

“If it is so evil, man up and do it,” he added.
