oh. btw. Nurses in California make $578.21/day or $144,551.54/yr CAN which is more than some doctors make in Canada. Not a bad chaunk of change.

I guess that's why they "fled" Canada. Love of the money...I mean their work

You're being generous. I was thinking between a 26-28% cut

I was just getting started! :p

All expenses will be reduced to a $50 max.

Governor General, $8 an hour plus tips. But she has to pay taxes on the tips.

This might also explain why the banks, business leaders, etc. are powerless to stop this economic chaos. They mainly learnt how to use the economy to their own ends like in a game of chess. Needless to say, with that mentality there can only be winners and losers. So if they're all taught like that, systematically, as part of their formal education, and taught that that's just how it is, no wonder the system is collapsing.

Quoting tracy Maybe it's because I work in a field without a true product (other than healthy people leaving the hospital). Nursing unions in Canada are simply the norm. I never would have questionned it. The US is another ballgame. The northern part of the state is very pro-union, the southern part is still a battleground. The managers who keep their staff happy keep unions out. The managers who truly make their staff miserable ensure unions get voted in. Then they simply wind up having to do the things they should have been doing in the first place. The unions in California have basically single handedly created staffing laws that no other state has managed to do. It makes the state THE best state in which to work imo. I wouldn't dream of moving to work elsewhere and it's thanks to the progress the unions have made here in the last few years.

While I agree with you, the time will come that the State of California will get fedup and do like Arizona and turn around 180.. It will become a "Right To Work" State making Unions powerless and then making all the advantages worked on hard by other Unions that have the workers rights at heart all lost. Then we are back at Management taking advantage of workers again.. Soo sad..

Harper's auto industry expert has quit - I guess Harper prefers to rely on inside advice - No big suprise there!
On the wage cut issue - There are a lot of public servants that get perks the private sector could only dream about - There are also a lot that get little - The folks that work for Employment Canada have benefits that your local librarian would go on strike if they had to sccumb to those levels.

And there are gov't dept's that get amazing "perks" such as industry Canada. I guess in the true scope of things - we used to call them "kickbacks"

I work as a Defence Contractor and do you think National Defence gets alot of "goodies" at Christmas. To quote Sarah Palin "You betcha!"

If the only problem is worker wages, why are their sales figures also in the toilet compared to other companies? Toyota is hurting, but it's nothing like GM. If they made better cars they wouldn't have lost so much of their market share to foreign companies over the last 30 years.

I guess you are not familiar with one of the root causes of the problem here. The pension packages which the union demanded several years ago from the big three manufacturers are what is bleeding the companies dry. The abuse that I've seen is unbelievable. The quality of the cars has nothing to do with it. Blame the unions.

Some industries are still hanging on without bailouts. Let the old industries fall to make way for the new. And no I'm not being mean. I'm not suggesting that workers all be thrown onto the streets. We have EI and social assistance and free health care already, so it won't be that bad, and I'd even pitch in retraining as an added bonus. Yes when they go back on the market they'll have to accept more reasonable wages, but that's life.

LOL, what nonsense. EI payments are roughly 75% of your wages. If you were 'barely making it' before, you wouldn't just on EI. Social assistance is a joke. How can you live on less than $600 a month? Yes it is bad, you just need to get your head out of the sand.

That cost $12/hr out of the total compensation (wages, benefits, pensions) of $66/hr per unionized employee. It's very high, but GM should have thought of that long before 2008. The union truely robbed them blind that time. Hindsights great isn't it...

Ei is 55% to a max $710 biweekly. Social Assistance is $536/mth

The problem with a lot of pension plans (Defined Benefits) is that people just do not die soon enough - It use to be that you worked till you were 60 or 65 and then were dead at 70 or before - With our improved and costly health care system on both sides of the border people live another decade for which benefits now have to be paid.
On a side note - The life expectancy in the US has actually fallen in recent years - Just like union membership - HMMMMM!

Frankly. I can't see a reason for anybody to make more than $50/hr or less than $10/hr.

It's the absurdity of wages at the high end of the scale that causes all of the overinflationry prices and consumerism.

I'm as guilty as anybody and would take a 30% pay cut, if I knew that it would affect the COL in a positive way ~30%

OK so in how many cases can you show workers taking gross advantage of employers ?

Private enterprise please, leaving out the 3 automakers who created their own demise ?

I live in Vancouver.

All's you have to do is go to the docks and watch the longshoreman. $320/day minimum for 4 hrs work. Brotherhood of International Longshoreman - one of the most powerful unions in the world

next....

Aw yes... Have you ever tried to be one of these.. Might as well become part of the mob.. Actually the dues are lower and the women are prettier ( at the mob that is )..

Having been looking for an alternative and having had to take 2 pay cuts in 4 years, with a possible layoff and loss of my house and property in next month, you do not have my sympathy..

All looks rosy thru your glasses but its not that simple.. Two kids and no place to live.. Life is a bitch to some of us that do work hard..
