Poor, poor cap.

One day Keystone XL will finally get built.

Alberta renewable revolution begins with launch of largest solar project in Western Canada

The Brooks project, which launched last week, is the first utility scale solar facility in Western Canada, far surpassing any other solar project currently operating. This is the first of several renewable energy projects to be constructed in Alberta as the province shifts away from coal power plants.

The 50,000 solar panels will collect enough sunlight to power 3,000 homes, according to Vancouver-based developer Elemental Energy. The Brooks solar project is more than five years in the making, although actual construction took seven months.

Alberta is set to embark on a renewable energy revolution. Some renewable energy already exists in the province, but the sector is about to grow substantially. This month, the provincial NDP government announced partnerships with three companies to develop four wind farms, worth $1 billion. The projects will open in 2019.

Collectively, about $50 billion is expected to be invested in developing renewable energy in Alberta and Saskatchewan before 2030 as both provinces strive to reach targets for how much of the electric grid is powered by wind, solar and hydro.

Freedom lovers, it seems, hate the concept of making energy at home.

I have solar panels on my house. Gives me free power.

I have an address that proves this on google maps.

In the future I hope to purchase a car that charges off them.

Some prefer to let the man give them power.

I'm sure there are many people who are doing it themselves.

I think Boomer has his own setup.

What a silly thread. Alberta has been developing alternative energy for years. In fact, the Cowley Ridge Wind Farm is 25 years old

I love making energy at home... Burning tires, and lots of 'em, produces tons of energy.

PS - tell Flossy that KXL is under construction

hehehehe

But nobody lives here right Flosshole?

Only $50B in the next 13 years? The equivalent of 4 shiny new nuclear power plants.

I'm glad we wasted oil, uranium and potash money on rebuilding the grid before going and building projects all willy-nilly like.

Oh fer sure. Just imagine all the consumer products Alberta will now be able to make using the by-products of refined solar power.
Although, if there's anyplace in Canada you could conceivably put a solar farm that wouldn't just be a huge virtue signaling waste of money, it's southern Alberta.

The prairies are such a natural for solar/wind. I would love to see western Canada become the mecca of intelligent energy, and there's no reason they couldn't. They have the natural resource in abundance and they have the conventional energy engineers/scientists/technicians/infrastructure and expertise.

I see a huge amount of valuable farmland lost to a taxpayer subsidized folly. Fortunately there is an election looming in Alberta and the nonsense will soon end. It is stupid shit like this that gets the Trump's of the world elected.

So you hate your neighbors.

I'm shocked.

Oh yes, not having to rely on a finite resource for part of our energy mix is just awful.

Makes more sense to pay money to tear it up.

Then we can ask the tax payers to cover it afterward.

You can say that again.

Wow, how ugly is that? How much more good "farm land" is going to be gobbled up by all those solar panels; panels that won't power even 1% of what natural gas does now. I guess another "tar" sands project in the making but because it's solar, it's good. Yeah sure. Oh and having those ugly windmills like they have in Ontario is going to really beautify the country side as well. Huh!

Solar panels on roofs are one thing - this is just plain stupidity and a big waste of money!

Seriously?

They have been for generations already, wheat is a product of solar energy. And vastly more efficient than either solar panels or windmills and it,s redily convertable into vehicular fuels.
