LONDON — The origin of the novel coronavirus is still unclear and the theory that it was caused by a laboratory leak needs to be taken seriously until there is a rigorous data-led investigation that proves it wrong, a group of leading scientists said.

COVID-19, which emerged in China in late 2019, has killed 3.34 million people, cost the world trillions of dollars in lost income and upended normal life for billions of people.

“More investigation is still needed to determine the origin of the pandemic,” said the 18 scientists, including Ravindra Gupta, a clinical microbiologist at the University of Cambridge, and Jesse Bloom, who studies the evolution of viruses at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

“Theories of accidental release from a lab and zoonotic spillover both remain viable,” the scientists including David Relman, professor of microbiology at Stanford, said in a letter to the journal Science.

The authors of the letter said the World Health Organization’s investigation into the origins of the virus had not made a “balanced consideration” of the theory that it may have come from a laboratory incident.

In its final report, written jointly with Chinese scientists, a WHO-led team that spent four weeks in and around Wuhan in January and February said the virus had probably been transmitted from bats to humans through another animal, and that a lab leak was “extremely unlikely” as a cause.

But there are myriad different ideas about the origin of the virus including a series of conspiracy theories.

“We must take hypotheses about both natural and laboratory spillovers seriously until we have sufficient data,” the scientists said, adding that an intellectually rigorous and dispassionate investigation needed to take place.

“In this time of unfortunate anti-Asian sentiment in some countries, we note that at the beginning of the pandemic, it was Chinese doctors, scientists, journalists, and citizens who shared with the world crucial information about the spread of the virus–often at great personal cost.”

Is Fauci GOING TO JAIL? - Wuhan Lab Scandal Psyop Being Pushed As A Plan B!

⁣Josh Sigurdson reports on the recent news of Dr. Anthony Fauci
funding research via the NIAID at the Wuhan Institute of Virology with
US government grants to study coronavirus in bats that's 96% similar to
the novel coronavirus. The study was gain of function. We reported on
this back in early 2020. Now, suddenly the mainstream media is talking
about it as though it's a new story. Tucker Carlson went after Fauci.
Senator Rand Paul confronted Fauci over this issue. The fact is, this
has become a limited hangout.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology which the WHO refused to investigate has
been caught, so they're manipulating the story to make it appear as
though a virus "accidentally" leaked from the lab. Meanwhile, the
governments of the world are starting to throw people under the bus to
mitigate the issue as much as possible. The reality is, covid19 has
never been isolated from a single human, so it's a misdirection. It's a
limited hangout.

They're trying to divide and they're trying to prolong the fear over
something they can't even sequence. Rather, the bioweapon failed and
they've been using PCRs to fool people into thinking that they're sick
when they're not. Propping up numbers in order to take vast control over
the populace. That is the goal here. The Fauci story is a scam. They're
simply misdirecting people from the entirety of the truth by telling a
small part of the truth. It is modus operandi of the CIA.
Stay tuned as we continue to cover this issue closely!

WASHINGTON — Three researchers from China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) sought hospital care in November 2019, months before China disclosed the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing a previously undisclosed U.S. intelligence report.

The newspaper said the report – which provides fresh details on the number of researchers affected, the timing of their illnesses, and their hospital visits – may add weight to calls for a broader probe of whether the COVID-19 virus could have escaped from the laboratory.

The report came on the eve of a meeting of the World Health Organization’s decision-making body, which is expected to discuss the next phase of an investigation into the origins of COVID-19.

A National Security Council spokeswoman had no comment on the Journal’s report but said the Biden administration continued to have “serious questions about the earliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, including its origins within the Peoples Republic of China.”

She said the U.S. government was working with the WHO and other member states to support an expert-driven evaluation of the pandemic’s origins “that is free from interference or politicization.”

“We’re not going to make pronouncements that prejudge an ongoing WHO study into the source of SARS-CoV-2, but we’ve been clear that sound and technically credible theories should be thoroughly evaluated by international experts,” she said.

The Journal said current and former officials familiar with the intelligence about the lab researchers expressed a range of views about the strength of the report’s supporting evidence, with one unnamed person saying it needed “further investigation and additional corroboration.”

The United States, Norway, Canada, Britain and other countries in March expressed concerns about the WHO-led COVID-19 origins study, and called for further investigation and full access to all pertinent human, animal and other data about the early stages of the outbreak.

Washington is keen to ensure greater cooperation and transparency by China, according to a source familiar with the effort.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.

On Sunday, China’s foreign ministry noted that a WHO-led team had concluded a lab leak was extremely unlikely after a visit in February to the virology institute. “The U.S. continues to hype the lab leak theory,” the ministry said in response to a request for comment by the Journal. “Is it actually concerned about tracing the source or trying to divert attention?”

The Trump administration had said it suspected the virus may have escaped from a Chinese lab, which Beijing denies.

A State Department fact sheet released near the end of the Trump administration had said “the U.S. government has reason to believe that several researchers inside the WIV became sick in autumn 2019, before the first identified case of the outbreak, with symptoms consistent with both COVID-19 and common seasonal illnesses.” It did not say how many researchers.

China refused to give raw data on early COVID-19 cases to the WHO-led team probing the origins of the pandemic, according to one of the team’s investigators, Reuters reported in February, potentially complicating efforts to understand how the outbreak began.

Biden shut down Pompeo-led effort to prove theory COVID originated from Wuhan lab over concerns about quality of evidence: Trump says it was obvious that's where virus came from

  • Joe Biden's team ended a State Department investigation into Wuhan lab
  • The investigation was begun by Mike Pompeo's allies in fall and ran until spring
  • Senior State Department officials were unaware of the existence of the inquiry
  • In January they asked an independent panel of scientists to evaluate findings
  • A three-hour meeting was held with the panel concluding the probe was flawed
  • Critics of the effort said it was overtly political and designed to burnish Trump
  • Trump had long claimed that the Wuhan theory for COVID-19 was likely
  • Many scientists initially disregarded the theory but are now accepting it
  • Supporters of the investigation insisted it was genuine and well executed
  • Biden's team in February or March decided to end their research
  • The Wuhan theory is gaining traction: Trump Tuesday said he felt vindicated

Wuhan Lab Caught Deleting Files Proving Fauci Funding

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) — a division of the National Institute of Health (NIH) headed by Dr. Anthony Fauci since 1984 — has, for years, provided grants to the EcoHealth Alliance and others to conduct gain-of-function (GoF) research on coronaviruses
  • In a May 11, 2021, Senate hearing, Fauci denied ever having funded GoF research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). This despite clear documentation proving otherwise
  • In March 2021 the WIV deleted mentions of its collaboration with the NIAID/NIH and other American research partners from its website. It also deleted descriptions of GoF on the SARS virus
  • The NIH/NIAID has funded GoF research to the tune of at least $41.7 million. Up until 2014, this research was conducted by Ralph Baric at the University of North Carolina (UNC). After 2014, when federal funding of GoF was banned, such research was funneled to the WIV via the EcoHealth Alliance
  • In August 2020, the NIAID announced a five-year, $82-million investment in a new global network of Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases that will conduct GoF experiments to "determine what genetic or other changes make [animal] pathogens capable of infecting humans"

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) top emergency expert said on Friday the search for the origin of the coronavirus was being “poisoned by politics,” days after U.S. President Joe Biden ordered aides to find answers.

Since the virus outbreak that emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019, scientists have been trying to solve the puzzle of where the virus originated.

“We would like for everyone out there to separate, if they can, the politics of this issue from the science. This whole process is being poisoned by politics,” Mike Ryan told reporters.

A WHO-led team spent four weeks in and around Wuhan with Chinese researchers and said in a report in March that the virus had probably been transmitted from bats to humans through another animal.

It said that “introduction through a laboratory incident was considered to be an extremely unlikely pathway.”

But many politicians and a number of scientists are not satisfied.

Biden on Wednesday ordered aides to find answers to the virus’ origin, saying U.S. intelligence agencies were pursuing rival theories, potentially including the possibility of a laboratory accident in China.

The United States on Thursday called on the WHO to carry out a second probe.

“Every country and every entity is free to pursue their own particular theories of origin, it’s a free world,” Ryan said. “WHO is a member state organization and we seek to work with all of our member states to seek answers collectively.”

Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical lead on COVID-19, added that the issue required multiple missions and would take time.
