Microsoft seeks 'exceptions' to Trump immigration ban

Microsoft, one of the tech companies that has expressed opposition to President Trump’s executive order on immigration, is asking the administration to grant exceptions on a case by case basis “that will permit `Responsible Known Travelers with Pressing Needs’ to re-enter the country while protecting the nation’s security.”

Microsoft filed the formal request in a letter sent by company president and chief legal officer Brad Smith to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly.

“We recognize that this proposal will not and should not end the broader debate and deliberations regarding last week’s executive order,” Smith wrote in a blog post.

Trump’s order barred people from entering the U.S. from Syria indefinitely and temporarily restricts entry from six other primarily-Muslim countries: Libya, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

Microsoft said that 76 employees and their 41 dependents who have nonimmigrant visas were impacted by the executive order.

“But even amidst these debates, there is an opportunity under the executive order to address the pressing needs of real people,” Smith wrote.

“There currently are law-abiding visa holders who are parents that were outside the United States last Friday and therefore cannot re-enter the country. These parents are stranded and separated from their children. Other individuals are confronting genuine family emergencies such as the need to visit a critically ill parent.”

Smith outlined several criteria under which the exceptions be granted, including applicants who already have nonimmigrant visas sponsored by a U.S. employer or who have a student visa with an accredited U.S. university. Immediate family members to such individuals would also be considered for an exception. And applicants must also not have committed a crime in the U.S.

Smith wrote that many of these individuals fill critical roles in the organizations that employ them. “They are deeply valued contributors to the innovation, research and business acumen of our nation," adding that it would also "be tragic for a student to be faced with the need to forfeit a dream of completing one’s education in the United States to tend to family needs that are entirely outside of one’s control.”

Microsoft is one of the tech companies reportedly working on a letter opposing the ban. According to Recode, which published a draft of the letter, Alphabet, Apple, Facebook, Uber and Stripe are also said to be teaming up on the letter.

That is a reasonable request that could be granted without endangering the country. Of course the employers will assume all liability.

I'm hoping for a no from Trump. Then the techies can come to Canada - apparently tech companies here are broaching the subject with the PM.

The Tech giant is angry that their 'fleshy thingys' are being held up at airports and absent from work.

(It was so good I had to repeat it!) :)

The Canadian government should make an offer to Microsoft to relocate to Canada. It would be a win all around. Microsoft would ensure free movement of its Workforce. Canada would get a leading edge corporation. The US would cut down on the number of darkies coming into their country and here in Canada both sides of the political debate would be happy. Trudeau leftyies would be happy because they were screwing Trump. Trumpites would be happy if we gave Microsoft millions of dollars to come and us normal people would be happy because it would create lots of good paying jobs

Obviously some don't know it. It is a 'pause' - not a ban. The media gets a more desirable reaction by continuing to call it a ban.

Boston Judge Unblocks Trump Travel Ban, Asks "Where Does It Say Muslim Countries?"

Update: It appears President Trump is pleased with the judge's decision...

We must keep "evil" out of our country!

As we detailed earlier, in a blow to every mainstream media news outlet (and likely hurting a lot of feelings), President Donald Trump’s ban on immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries will take effect in Boston on Sunday after a federal judge refused to extend a temporary ruling blocking its enforcement.

As Bloomberg reports, the decision by U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton on Friday dealt a setback to rights advocates who argued that blocking people from seven nations in the Middle East was unconstitutional. Gorton was weighing whether to extend a seven-day order blocking parts of Trump’s Executive Order.
The case, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of several affected immigrants, is one of several that followed Trump’s Jan 27 order, which roiled global travel by barring entry to the U.S. of citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Individuals, organizations, politicians and some states called it unconstitutional religious discrimination against Muslims.
As GMA News Onine reports, U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton on Friday asked Matthew Segal, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) representing the plaintiffs in the Boston case.
"Where does it say Muslim countries?"
Segal replied...
"If your honor's question is, 'Does the word 'Muslim' make a profound presence in this executive order?,' my answer is that it doesn't,... But the president described what he was going to do as a Muslim ban and then he proceeded to carry it out."
Gorton shot back,
"Am I to take the words of an executive at any point before or after election as a part of that executive order?"
Judge Gorton on Friday asked U.S. Justice Department lawyer Joshua Press how the seven countries had been selected.
Press responded that the list had come from a law passed in 2015 and amended early last year requiring that citizens of the seven countries apply for visas to enter the United States, "out of concern about the refugees that were coming, mainly from Syria at that time and terrorist events that were occurring in Europe."
As we noted previously, only 12.5% of the world's Muslims live in the seven countries on Trump's immigration ban list...

Trump's Travel Ban Halted

A federal judge in Seattle on Friday granted a nationwide temporary restraining order blocking U.S. President Donald Trump's recent action barring nationals from seven countries from entering the United States.

The judge's order represents a major challenge to the Trump administration, which is expected to immediately appeal. The judge declined to stay the order, suggesting that travel restrictions could be lifted immediately.

The challenge was brought by the state of Washington and later joined by the state of Minnesota. The Seattle judge ruled that the states have legal standing to sue, which could help Democratic attorneys general take on Trump in court on issues beyond immigration

Re: "Where does it say Muslim countries?"

I am hoping that people will slowly realize that they were improperly whipped into a frenzy by the press.

On this board, I did point out what executive orders are and what they are designed to do. If the US population is like the microcosm of humanity on CC Forum, some won't listen, others won't understand and a few are too stupid for any explanations to stick.
