Any lay offs will be zellers lay offs.
No, they'll be laid off by Target. Target owns the locations. They didn't purchase the Zellers brand. They purchased select HBC assets. HBC still owns the Zeller's brand and will operate a few Zeller's locations.

Why would Target buy the Zeller's brand? It's almost synonymous with crap.

Half a dozen in the States. I'd place it on par with WalMart for product, price and cleanliness. Slightly higher on customer service.

From my experiences during my last few visits to Zellers, no one currently employed at their Newmarket stores are qualified to work for Target.

Based on my last trip to Zellers none of their staff would qualify for a job with Canada Post.

Of course not, being that Canada Post requires well educated, self motivated, driven workers, who are capable of working on their own for hours without close supervision.

A very astute observation, Taxslave. I continue to be amazed at your wealth of knowledge. Thank you for your vote of confidence in our postal workers.

Firstly, Target obtained the leases from Hudson’s Bay. Hudson’s Bay made more money off this selloff then the owner’s initially paid for the entire company a few years back and have not made any effort in protecting Zellers employees. These two corporate players have ‘negotiated’ that all Zellers personal be muzzled from talking to any media. Zellers employees will have to forego the several years service, some of which have been with the company for 25+ years, and now reapply to Target to take on lower paying wages, less benefits (if any) and low seniority jobs. While I do agree, it is time to see Zellers go, there seems to lack any corporate responsibility to all the Zellers employees who put their years, their trust and loyalty to a company who hangs them out to dry. I think it’s a sad day for all Canadians as this is the world we live in today. Big corporate rules, and the little guy continues to suffer. Both Target and HBC are guilty in this scenario. Happy shopping because I know nothing of what I posted above will detour the majority of shoppers from going there. Who cares, right?

Why are foreign entities allowed to come into Canada without guarantees that they will serve Canadian interests?

For exactly the same reasons why Canadian companies are allowed to come into the USA for THEIR purposes.

Target is an outstanding company, and it provides a great service to the customer: Quality and low prices.

Used to be the Foreign Investment Review Commission would look at situations of large scale buyouts of Canadian companies on the basis of their benefits to the Canadian economy and society.. but in the monolithic logic of Free Markets and Free Trade and unfettered rights for Global Investment Capital.. which the Harper government is unquestioningly subordinate. Harper couldn't care less about their effects... he covets going on his pathetic, grovelling pilgrimages to Wall Street and Davos.. to report on his dismantling of Canadian sovereignty to his superiors.
