And, more imorantly, government did not fall over itself in giving WalMart inducements and allowing it to flout labour practises.
The nearest WalMart to me had to fight tooth and nail to get built. And knowing several happy people that work there, I'd be interested in hearing about the flouted labour practices.

I used to work at Wal-Mart. I found their labour practices were awesome given the level of turnover and chaos they have to deal with as a natural fact of being the lower end of the pay scale.

I shop at our walmart fairly often, and the efficiency of their employees is impressive, and I also
commend them on being very open minded when hiring staff.
The other day I went thru the cash to pay, and a nice young lady waited on me who had a definite speech
impediment, she had to slowly and carefully make herself understood, I didn't even blink, just talked
to her as though her speech was perfect, but the point is, walmart does go outside the box occasionally
and hire people that others probably would 'not'.

No, I was a 'department backup' and the golds and diamond receiver. The only people who usually end up with real trouble with customers in any store are the customer service people and the main cashiers.

No arguments there. I've heard they are kean on promoting from within and move people who are hard workers and go getters up the ranks pretty quick.

Which is why I asked Cabbage to expand on his claim.

If there is a shortage of unskilled work while companies are struggling to find skilled workers, it would seem teh solution is not to legislate people out of work by raising the minimum wage, but rather by retraining the unemployed for the jobs that are available.

Sorry, but that just makes too much sense and it ain't gonna happen.;-)

Our local Wallymart employs a shipload of people. How much they make and whether or not they're part time, I dunno. Lot are ladies who are bringing in some extra bucks. Many have been there since the store opened.

Being a nosy shyte, I've asked them if they like the job. The answer most often, is yes.

The electronics folks know their stuff.

Likewise the hardware/sporting goods guy.

My wife thinks "George" sucks......................................8Oeh!!!?.................dunno, ask her.

They had a huge sale on months ago, and had MY SIZE in track pants/joggers................for ten bucks!!! I bought a bunch. Gerry Seinfeld says that if you wear track pants, you've basically "given up"...........And he can bite my bum.............I'm an old fart and I'll wear what I want.:thefinger:

Giver........Wally. Drive that wage down. 200 million Chinese can't be wrong

You're lucky. The guy in our local WalMart knows less about hunting and fishing than my wife does, lol.

Out of the whole place, it's the only dept that I have an issue with, lol.

.

Why do you say it like that? Maybe I'm wrong but I got the impression your wife knows quite a bit more than most on the subject. Now, if he knew less about hunting and fishing than *I* do, I might find that odd. lol.

On May 1. the minimum wage in B.C. jumped to $10.25 an hour, which will help absolutely nobody, the only difference being prices will escalate and more shoppers will stay home. What baffles me is how many supposedly intelligent politicians think it will work. Did it work in 1950? in 1951? in 1960? in 1990? in 2000? "Only a moron thinks doing things the same way will get different results"

With an attitude like that, you'd be fired from most workplaces.

employees have been known to throw stuff in the garbage so they can 'recover' it later.

almost every workplace has rules about taking trash - if you want to stay employed, you should get permission first.

I've never pulled stuff out of the trash at work yet (since there was nothing in there worth taking). There is no such rule where I work either but like I said, there is nothing worth taking in our trash cans. It just seems odd that something that's going to be trashed anyway should be so "valuable".

As Ten Penny pointed out. It is a rule in many work places, because employees have been known to throw things of value in the trash, and recover them later.

It's been a policy in almost every place I've ever worked.

Sorry, I misread your post. You types "employees", not "employers". OK, good point there. Certainly you'd want to check that the trash in quesiton is legit. And it would be suspicious that quality stuff should be in the trash in the first place. True enough.

Now that I think about it, if I did find something worth taking from the trash, I'd probably ask why it was thrown there in the first place. My curious side would definitely take over, or I might assume if it's trashed ther is some problem or other with it, so especially with food I'd be cautious.

The headline is false. Target didnt buy zellers, just the locations. If the employees are mad, blame it on zellers. Any lay offs will be zellers lay offs.

You're right. I'd misread the word "employee" and not "employer" in her post.

Where I work we don't have anything to trash or steal in the first place, except compuer equipment I suppose though that's kind of hard to sneak out without getting noticesd. Computers usually don't fit into a back pocket, and that's probably why we don't have any such policy. But now that I think about it, what you say makes sense for any retail company at least.
