Because they were riding high at the time but now that they've been exposed for over stepping they want to soften the blow.

The poll indicated that 88 per cent of Canadians strongly or somewhat support the “requirement that people show their faces during Canadian citizenship ceremonies.”

At the same time, 72 per cent of respondents said they strongly or somewhat agree with Harper’s comment about the niqabs and burkas being symbols of oppression.

The Court of Public Opinion says we are a nation with a Right Wing agenda

Islamic scholars & Imams from all around the world have all said the burka & niquab are NOT religious items but rather cultural such as a Stetson out West or a French beret.

Evidently the Supreme Court of Canada knows better!

The arrogance of these unelected mediocrities is breath taking.

Harpy broke the law with his ban. He should be in jail. lol

If women want to wear a shawl around their heads, that's ok with me, if that is THEIR choice and no-one else's. If men want to force them to wear said shawl, frack 'em and I hope one day those shawled women rebel and do a Lorena Bobbitt on said oppressive men. And if some religion tells women to wear said shawl, frack 'em, too.

I had a Lebanese gf once (Huriyyah, I called her Harry to avoid spitting on everyone when I pronounced her name properly) and told her pretty much the same thing in front of her 4 brothers and parents. Her family with the possible exception of her Mum, hated me. lol

That it caused no harm and it isn't a security issue during a citizenship ceremony?

We told ya.
Niqab ruling to be appealed to Supreme Court, Tories say - Politics - CBC News
Conservatives doubled down on their position that women should not wear face coverings during citizenship ceremonies, saying the government would take the matter to the Supreme Court, while vowing to reintroduce the niqab ban within 100 days of re-election.

On Tuesday, the Federal Court of Appeal dismissed the government's appeal of an earlier Federal Court ruling that declared the ban on face coverings at such ceremonies was unlawful.
