Eaglesmack your restraint of involving yourself in Canadian affairs is, indeed admirable. I wish we Canadians could (would) show the same discipline not butting our noses into American affairs.
Including myself.

America is a super power. Their affairs are everybody's affairs.

Absolutely. Just because they aren't getting stuck with the juice doesn't mean life has to be all rainbows and sunshine on the inside. Prison is awful.

Is it the isolation? Because someone told me isolation is for pussies? :)

Most people will argue that their country is the best to live in. However reports have shown this one (Canada) is a good one :)

Cannuck, I lived and worked in the States for six years. I found the American people kind an generous and - at least the ones I met - totally without national or racial prejudice. They NEVER denigrated me for being Canadian, as you denigrate them - and sadly, also those of us who are not blind Yankee-hating pseudo-patriot Canadians, like you - as you denigrate Americans.

Your deplorable "advise" for me to move to the States reveals just what a morally low person you are. No wonder you are universally hated by everyone on this forum.

If I were the kind of person - and I use the word with some doubt - I would sink to your level and tell you where to go.

Consider yourself told.

Anyways, it seems so far to be a mixed field. I am still pro-capital punishment but I do see some of the points being made and in all honesty, some of them make good sense.

I was not aware that Cannuck was universally hated by everyone on this forum. Mayhap you have mistaken quality bickering for something it plainly isn't nor has to be.

I voted yes to the poll. However, such a decision ought to be above board. Candidates ought to be clear of where they stand from the start and not vascillate. Though I support capital punishment in principle, I would not be too fond about an MP who should try to sneak it in. Make it known where you stand.

I don't denigrate Americans or America. In fact I'm working on a deal to buy a house down in Arizona because I like it so much down there. Saying we're better isn't denigrating them. I like chocolate ice cream better than vanilla. While you may feel that that statement "denigrates" vanilla ice cream, I certainly don't.

We already utilize every excuse in the book to justify killing in so many ways it would be hard to tally. Why chalk up more lame excuses? The more justifications you find to kill for one reason or another is just one more step closer to those powers being abused.

If we're going to go backwards in time with law and order I'd prefer chain gangs over the death penalty.

I'm starting to think that maybe chain gangs would be a good alternative to capital punishment but I am sure of one thing: Harsher punishments for some crimes are in order.

No way, no matter what way you slice it, it's wrong.

They always say it's about deterence, but it's never really about deterence. It actually deters no one. It's about retribution and revenge, two things the law abiding should definitely remain above.

I think it should be decided by referendum. After all this country belong to the people, not just the politicians who make the laws. If we are a democracy, as we are led to believe, then the majority should rule.
If we had the death penalty, it should only be used when there is no reasonable doubt. Never on a conviction by circumstantial evidence.
That would mean if there is a confession, eye witnesses, or positive DNA proof. It should not be used in cases of murder for self defense or by accident.

I once believed wholeheartedly in capital punishment, but had my beliefs shaken by poor men like Milgard and Morin.

I believe in the law. It sometimes taxes me, it sometimes puzzles me, bit it is what separates us from the animals of the world.

But stories like this, leave me with an emotional response that would make John Carpenter cringe...

That story would shake anybody up, those people are monsters. Animals behave better.

I can remember, when I was around 13 or 14, reading the original book about Steven Truscott and when I got to the passage where it describes how he sat in his cell listening to them building the gallows. I got such a chill. How close it really came to being completely uncorrectable.

Milgard, Morin, Marshall. The many convictions resulting from that disgraced coroner here in Ontario. The list goes on and on and on.

I think you may have just hit on a solution to that sort of problem, if you give false testimony that results in a wrongful conviction you go on the list of those eligible for the death penalty.
