Fish oil supplements 'beat psychotic mental illness'

Taking a daily fish oil capsule can stave off mental illness in those at highest risk, trial findings suggest.
A three-month course of the supplement appeared to be as effective as drugs, cutting the rate of psychotic illness like schizophrenia by a quarter.
The researchers believe it is the omega-3 in fish oil - already hailed for promoting healthy hearts - that has beneficial effects in the brain.

I take a very high quality 'Nutra Sea', omega 3 supplement
every day, and have been for some time, as I do know the
value of nutrients from the 'fishies'.

It has been known for a long time that fish is good for brains, it is nothing new. I am a big fan of P.G.Wodehouse (pronounced ‘Woodhouse’), the author of Jeeves and Wooster stories.

There he has described several decades ago (and many times too) how Jeeves got his superior brain due to eating fish.

I buy live cod and eat their livers.

Then, I let them go.

Pretty smart, eh.

Conserving fish like that.

It's the fishy-brain effect.

They just "discovered" this? My grandmother and my mother both knew that fish was good "brain food!"

Next thing you know they'll be "discovering" that fish oil is good for the immune system too! (Better give them a few more years for the research funding to run its course...)

Kelp
The kelps generally include the many large brown types of seaweed and are among the most familiar forms found on North American coasts. Some have fronds up to 200 ft (61 m) long. Kelps are especially abundant in Japan, and various foods known as kombu are made from them. They are used chiefly as chemical reagents and for dietary deficiencies in people.
Kelp contains nearly 30 minerals. It is rich in iodine, calcium, sulphur and silicon. It also contains phosphorus, iron, sodium, potassium, magnesium, chlorine, copper, zinc and manganese. It has a small amount of barium, boron, chromium, lithium, nickel, silver, titanium, vanadium, aluminum, strontium, bismuth, chlorine, cobalt, gallium, tin and zirconium. Kelp is rich in B-complex vitamins. It contains vitamin A, C, E and G. It also contains anti-sterility vitamin S, and it has anti-hemorrhage vitamin K.
Kelp is a good promoter of glandular health. It is beneficial for hypothyroidism as it controls the thyroid and regulates the metabolism, which helps digest food. Kelp can rebalance thyroid metabolism, resulting in successful weight management. It is helpful in the nourishment of the body with its ability to stimulate metabolism. Kelp has shown the reversal of many conditions caused by a thyroid imbalance including stomach and respiratory disorders.
Kelp has a beneficial effect on many disorders of the body. It is called a sustainer to the nervous system and the brain, helping the brain to function normally
. It is essential during pregnancy. And it has been shown to prevent heart diseases.

Kelp is a big part of Chinese diet . While living in China , in Qingdao ,we have picked it on a beach ,when the tied moved out , tasty .( and that's probably a wrong way of saying ,,,"the tied moved out" )

No, they just quantified this. Science routinely tests what is conventional wisdom, though I don't think the conventional wisdom was eating fish will help defend against some forms of psychosis.

Wasn't it only a decade or two ago that science discovered that mother's milk was better for babies than formula?

So I wonder when science will find out that hemp seed oil is beneficial, for the same reasons that fish oils are? It should only be a matter of another two or three centuries of research on top of the ten thousand already complete.
