Maybe in Canada. I was in the U.S. Air Force for 12 years, well before the 9/11 security paranoia, and I never once got onto a military base without showing my ID.

I used to toss my beret on the dashboard when crossing into the U.S. and it almost always resulted in a friendly welcome and interesting discussion. Now it's the Ice Trucker thing. The fascination with ice trucking is unreal. :)

We do, but not this one. With a uniform you can probably walk on to most military bases.

I rode with my son when he did deliveries to a forces base. He had ID (I guess). I just had my head stuck out the window, like the dog in the movies.

In the US, I would have got shot for sticking my head out the window, probably.

Drooling on a guard !. What's the penalty for that, Bones ?

Contrary to popular belief, the U.S. is not one big military base.

Yet.

But it'll do till one comes along.

I think he should make a public apollogy. Eating crow publically now will probably end what is turning into a witchhunt.

And as mentioned earlier, witchhunts cost us our precious TAXPAYER DOLLARS so should be avoided.

Looking at it that way, if he publicly apologized and the veterans forgave him and the military and police decided to drop it (not likely, I know, but just saying), the taxpayer would be very grateful.

Oh get over your precious tax dollars. The guy has a job, and a decent one so he is paying them too.

Sorry if my humour went over your head.

Things change. Our military is a lot smaller than yours. Entry into a military base is usually controlled by military police. After a while you get to know people and while your I.D. was checked initially, after a while they got to know you and security was sometimes reduced to a wave. A person in civilian dress would usually be checked.

That's right! I had a Marine at the gate at Norfolk Navy Base bust my azz because my ID wasn't in my left breast pocket! I was in full uniform, driving a military vehicle and the same rank as he was! He and I were both Lance Corporals... however... HE was on post and he must have been in a pissa mood that afternoon.

After 9/11 I would have thought it would take a hell of a lot more than a uniform to get you into a 'secure' place!

Sorry, juan, not meaning to be insulting, but you said "After a while you get to know people." Yes, that may be true, but how would that help someone falsely wearing a uniform? Gate security wouldn't have gotten to know him, and therefore would be checking his ID, no?

You are right of course. I don't think anything would have helped Mr. Gervais

I'd like to see him convicted and sentenced to a long term of community service-several years of filling bags of groceries @ the food bank, shoveling driveways, washing windows @ community centres and the like.
