I hear the Peace Prize winning Big O is thinking about sending 40,000 troops off to Afghanistan. I guess they'll be erecting schools, mosques, hospitals, doing dishes, walking the dog, fetching the kids from school, and all those other peaceful activities.

Show it like it is, people should be counted among the unemployed until they have a job or opt. to have their name removed (retired etc.). The numbers they are showing now are phony.

Perhaps, but until now you had no problem with how they were reporting the unemployment numbers, I assume you were OK with this reporting system under Bush. Just when Obama comes to power, you want to change the system to show a sudden, huge jump in unemployment.

Sounds just a bit suspicious to me.

Why of course! After all, Obama started the war on Afghanistan 8 years ago and still aims to win it after declaring ''mission accomplished''.

No my friend, they have been doing this since Johnson era, when they added the military to the employment rolls in order to lower unemployment rate, dropped thoser on it when their benefits ran out. Nothing you can blame Obama on, just the way it is.

His General is saying he needs help and 40,000 more troops could win the war. The Big O just sits on his duff and thinks about it for weeks as more die. This man has some decisions to make.

It is not an easy decision, ironsides. Polls show that Americans don’t want more troops sent to Afghanistan. I think eventually Obama will make the right decision and send in the troops that the generals want. War in Afghanistan must be won at all costs. But these decisions take time; they are not to be taken lightly.

If there was a plan ,a goal, an end game for Us in Afganistan ..More troops might be warranted..

But

What is the Goal?...Take over?..Rebuild?..There is no end ..No winning..No Bin Laden...The only good thing about hangin around Afganistan is to be close to all the action..

Never mind the polls, Obama has to either reinforce or get out. Waiting around and doing nothing will get him in worse trouble than either of those choices. That is what you get when you put a novice in such a powerful office. NATO forces were not sent there to sit around, just defeat the terrorists and get out. There was no long term objective when we first went there.

I agree Ironsides ..

Should we stir things up in Iran ,on our way out?(could mean trouble)..

As long as we're there .We have some say ....

Should we go into Pakistan after terrorist groups ?..Then leave?...
I believe these are the real issues at hand..

In the end I think there are enough troops in Afganistan and Iraq right now to do the military job that needs to be done. Unless we plan to stir things up ,which will only mean trouble..

Maybe investing and assisting Afgans to build/rebuild communitees 1 strong hold at a time is the best plan.

Let's keep in mind The U.S. has made arrangements with Russia to bring troops back through that country ..

It's all about balance..Not an easy decision to make..Starting the war is always easier than ending it..

The NATO forces were not sent to Afghanistan to rebuild it, they were sent to destroy Al Qaeda and the Taliban. If and only if they did that then they could rebuild. Rebuilding is not a primary duty in a war. We can only win if we take the politics out of the combat phase. These Al Qaeda and Taliban must be literally starved into submission. If that means making so called civilians that support them suffer, so be it. War is the cruelest thing man can do to another man, end it first and all other problems will resolve themselves hopefully over time. There was talks with Russia to bring troops in, but nothing was decided. Don't think they want to get involved again. As for Iran, I say leave them alone till they actually do something, they are a pretty big country and if something did happen the U.S. would be spread to thin to send combat troops.

Cut off all sources of supplies, especially with winter coming, keep the pressure on them and it all could end. No I agree starving them is almost impossible, but it sure can create more suffering on their part. Doing what were doing now will only drag this on and on, year after year till they win when we get tired. Happened a couple of times before, will we never learn. Turn the NATO Army's and Marines loose, let them do what there trained to do.

There's a reason that the Russians pulled out of Afghanistan years ago, and it wasn't the boycott of the Olympics. It was the never ending stream of dead soldiers coming home to Moscow, with nothing to show for it.

I'm sure there are lots of people in Russia laughing at the irony, now that it's NATO troops all coming home in boxes, after trying to do away with the 'freedom fighters' that we helped create to fight off the Russians.
