No ... See that blood on his rep panel? I just don't believe in your childish temper tantrums. You act like one of those kids who should be smacked from your shopping cart.

My god, what idiots on this site

I'm a native of Québec City, but Ive lived in Halifax for the past 8 years. I've been reading this site, and I am just really stunned by the tonne of ignorance and bias and just plain idiocy of what I'm reading. There are a few points I'd like to make about this thread.

1. The only official language of Québec is French. I'm sorry, but that's the way it is. The de facto official language of NS, or pretty much any other province in Canada (other than NB of course) is English. Upon moving here to NS, I realised that things are done here in English, not French. I havent ever complained about this, because, being a rational thinking human being, I realise that if a person decides to visit or settle in another part of the world, they have to accept the culture and language of where they are. It's no more complicated than that. In NS, most all media is in English. Most all government services are in English...most people speak English. Its a fact, and I accept it. If you move to Québec, do the same.

2. I am so sick of hearing how there is "real" French and "fake, québécois" French. I lived in Paris for two years, and never did I modify my accent, nor change the way I spoke. I never had any trouble being understood or understanding anyone. I personally find it quite ridiculous that an English Canadian, who speaks a dialect of the English language...a dialect that is often derided by Anglophones in the UK would come out so strongly against another variety of French. If you would study the differences between Canadian English and British English, you'd see there are literally thousands of differences in pronunciation, vocabulary and phonology. So, as someone coming from a place speaking an English "dialect", I find it ridiculous that you would judge a dialect of another language, especially given that the majority of Anglophones in Canada don't even speak enough French to be able to make an informed judgement.

Living in English Canada, I have to say that sometimes, I find it difficult to define what being a Canadian really means. There is so much americanization here, that often times its impossible to define what is Canadian. That being said, I have faith in Canada...I think it can work. But....seeing some of the idiotic comments on here, some of which go way beyond stupid and mis-informed, it puts that faith in doubt. I am the last person to say "ugh, les maudits anglais...ils sont en un mot = stupides"...I dont want to believe that. But, after reading this thread, I can sort of sympathise with some of my fellow Québécois who share that sentiment.

Merci.

One other tiny thing...

To the persons that propose that the army be called in to "invade" Québec, and that "nationalists" should be deported...after laughing at those comments, one question came to mind: Can the Canadian Forces even muster enough people to undertake such an "invasion"? I mean, with 2 tanks that date from 1944, 1 gun (without bullets), and a rubber ducky, I dont think they could mount too much of an attack. I mean, when a country like Belgium or Switzerland could beat the **** out of the Canadian Army...I think that a large groupe of old and large Québécois women could tackle the CF any day. Sorry to have to be so mean, but seriously...when you advocate genocide, you cant except a nice response.

God save the Queen and all her loyal subjects in Canada who dont even know she's head of state!

Joshbur,

I am English Québécois living in BC. I have found that in general, westerners have no clue as to what is going on in Quebec or why. Their ignorance and attitude borders on racism when it comes to the French. I lived through the tumultuous sixties, the FLQ and Trudeau's October crisis.

I was married to a French Québécois and I know first hand why they feel the way they do and it is the attitudes of English Canadians today that keeps the animosity alive. I only hope that both sides mature soon and get over their petty differences. It is time for all of us to grow up and get along. Seperatism of any group will weaken us all.

There are some pretty sharp, pointy sticks around my neck of the woods... Get poked by one of these and suffer the consequences! (and possibly a nasty infection).

In response to some of Joshbur's comments, I do find it somewhat peculiar that in one breath you state that the one official language in Quebec is French, and then lay into other Canadian provinces that have 2 official languages but essentially practice only English.

The point is that the 'confusion' you speak of goes both ways. many folks outside of Quebec are confused as to why there is one set of rules for one group and another set for everyone else, yet the hue and cry perpetually includes the word 'equality'.

Seems a little odd, ne c'est pas?

The main things that Quebec sucks is tax money from the rest of Canada and everybodys time dealing with a bunch of spoilt brats that can't even be bothered to learn the language of the country they were born in.

Quebec Sucks READ THIS PLEASE

i will tell you how bad quebec is, as living there for two years with my son of 10. I am english grew up hard and very street smart.
i lived in the east-end st.catharine an pie 1x.
i was attacked once with a bat my first month with my young son was called muadit anglais (stupid english). Knocked his ass out.
then a pitbull attack walking back from dairy queen again with my son. Sorry for the broken ribs doggy. The corruption is huge, police included. I went into order subs at a subwxy restaurant, very polite the girl had no command of english and i tried in french, i heard her say what are they doing here are subs were slopped together, called head office of the reastaurant they could have cared less. I can tell you this,,,the only reason i am alive is because i worked as a harley mechanic for a chopper shop. And was considered off limits at the time, but not everywhere, i also had my ex police dog with me at all times who was trained. I had an accident on my harley in june 07 i was cut off by a car went head first at 120kph into a wall almost lost my leg. When in er was interviewed by 2 plain clothes police officers wanting information about people i worked for...i had none...one year later the sortie came to my house and handed my an analysis cretificate saying i was over the limit of alcohol...........i do not drink, i asked the officer if i was being charged he said no but you may want to consider your cooperation, i now have a dui warrant in quebec,,for what?
cause i would not rat???? I can tell you this and this fact go to montreal as an english speaking person on june23 every year to the park in montreal and speak english..you won't last 15 seconds.
everyone knows this you are warned to stay away if you are english prove me wrong cause you know it's true. St. Jean baptiste weekend.
love to share more my email is stor7@gmail.com..i my son still bares the emotional scares for a ten year old boy to ask why to french people hat english???? Is wrong so anyone writing it's not like that email please cause i lived it. People commenting have a reason for saying the things they do. I support you all.

Wow....ugly story & experience(s). Are you still in Montreal? If you're not
happy there, Canada is a big country. I can see where your experiences
have turned you off....unfortunently there are arseholes pretty much
everywhere. People that single out others due to differences in background,
accent, physical appearance, ethnicity, etc....sad....

Hey, we do not make fun of people with accents, nor are we arrogant towards people of non-American citizenship. Now if you try and take advantage of social services only available to citizens, that is another matter. Lets not call the kettle black, heard a lot of whining right here. I have always had a great time in Quebec, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton as well as a few other places.
