Syracuse NY Couple receives 880 years in prison for abusing children

A northern New York couple were sentenced to a total of 880 years in prison for sexually exploiting six young girls, including two Amish sisters kidnapped from their family's roadside vegetable stand.

U.S. District Judge Glenn Suddaby sentenced Stephen Howells to 580 years in prison and Howells' former girlfriend Nicole Vaisey to 300 years in prison.

"You are the threat that parents worry about every day," Suddaby said to Howells. "You are the nightmare that never goes away for children."

Howells, 40, pleaded guilty in May to 21 counts of sexually exploiting children and child pornography.

He admitted he victimized the six girls from December 2012 through August of last year, when he and Vaisey were charged with kidnapping the Amish sisters in St. Lawrence County.

Vaisey admitted sexually exploiting four of the victims.

The sentencings were in keeping with the wishes of one of the victims. The girl was sexually abused nine times and used to produce child pornography. Before the abuse, Howells and Vaisey administered 10 dangerous drugs to subdue her, according to a federal prosecutor.

In a letter to the court, the girl made a request for the sentencings: "Isolate them for life."

Vaisey and Howells claimed they set the two Amish sisters free as an act of good will.

But Suddaby rejected that claim. He accepted the theory of Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa Fletcher. She argued that the Howells and Vaisey would've kept the victims as sex slaves indefinitely if a soundproof, makeshift prison cell in the couple's home had been finished.

Because the soundproofing wasn't finished, Howells and Vaisey were worried that neighbors might be able to hear the cries of their victims, Fletcher said. The judge agreed.

"The only reason you released them was the realization that the room... wasn't soundproofed," he told Vaisey.

A 2-year-old boy died in a home used as a methamphetamine lab after his parents left him alone in his room with a heater turned on – and didn’t check on him, police in Missouri said.

Braydon Barnes was put in his crib on a Friday and left unattended with a space heater on for more than 38 hours, St. Charles police said.

Both parents Kathleen Peacock and Lucas Barnes told police they had used methamphetamine recently. They told officers they had been manufacturing in the home the week preceding their son’s death.

The two were home all weekend as Braydon was shut in his room.

Peacock, who is currently pregnant, told police she heard Braydon make noises and knew that she should check on him but didn’t.

The space heater has no thermostat and does not turn off automatically.

It wasn’t until Sunday morning that the parents checked in on the boy, and found Braydon had died.

Paramedics said the child had been dead for some time.

Two Oklahoma women are accused of abusing a 5-year-old over the course of several months.

Rachel Stevens, 28, and Kayla Jones, 25, are charged with felony child abuse by injury and child neglect after allegedly beating a 5-year-old boy so severely that he suffered two strokes, according to the report.

In early December, police say the boy was airlifted to OU Medical Center, where doctors discovered he had multiple broken bones at different stages of healing and was malnourished. According to an affidavit, the boy also had lesions on his face and was having seizures.

Court records show the boy suffered two strokes due to trauma while he was being treated at OU Medical.

Investigators say they learned the boy had been locked in a room, bound with duct tape over his eyes, beaten with belts and a hammer, and had been kicked in the genitals until he bled. The boy reportedly told police that his mother, Stevens, and Stevens’ girlfriend, Jones, were responsible for the abuse.

Police say another 5-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl also lived in the home, but they do not believe those children were abused.

The Department of Human Services has taken those children into custody. The injured 5-year-old boy is still receiving treatment.
Stevens and Jones are both being held in the Muskogee jail.

A former Boy Scout leader accused of rape and sexual battery of a teen could have other victims and the extent of his alleged crimes is shocking according to search warrant documents.

Darrell G. Fisher, who was arrested earlier this month was able to conceal his alleged crimes until his victim came forward after learning his abuse possibly extended to others.

Police searched Fisher's Jocelyn Hollow Road home on January 13th and among the items they were searching for were diapers.

Among the more bizarre acts Fisher is accused of is wearing diapers. Fisher would allegedly soil the diapers and have the boy try to "change" him.

Based on arrest warrant information investigators were told by the victim the abuse started when he was 11-year-old and the boy was introduced to a "chastity belt." Fisher would make the boy wear one, which was described as an electric shocking belt device. The boy was also subjected to wearing a body harness, straps attached to a bed and other devices.

Fisher would ask the victim to masturbate and do so himself while watching pornography. Police searched the residence and according to the seizure summary only left with two computer towers, a latptop and cell phone.

Why don't the cops ever shoot these people?
A better question is how do you stop their victims from becoming abusers when they are adults? Sweeping things under the rug has shown it hasn't worked and shooting the victim so he doesn't turn into a pedo seems a tad extreme.

A Calgary man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting a child more than 1,500 times.

Kevin Michael Owad was convicted of distribution of child pornography, sexual assault and sexual interference.

He was originally identified in an international child pornography sting called Project Spade — a Toronto police-led investigation that ended in 2013 with the arrests of nearly 250 people and rescue of 350 children in 50 countries.

Included in those arrests were police officers, religious leaders, school teachers, foster parents, doctors and dozens of children volunteers.

Owad originally faced child pornography charges. He was found to have shared more than 35,000 files between February 2010 and October 2011. The Crown had proposed an eight year sentence but in the end, the judge decided on seven.

Through publicity about those charges, the complainant came forward to say he'd been assaulted while living with Owad — who was involved with the teen's hockey team — over a period of two years. The sexual assaults involved inappropriate touching.

During his trial, Owad admitted to sharing or trading child pornography daily for 13 years.

"[The victim] still struggles daily with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder among other issues in coping and dealing with all of this," said Crown prosecutor Carolyn Ayre.

The victim was involved with Owad's hockey team and was considered to be in a position of trust, which the judge noted as an aggravating factor.

In delivering his sentence, Justice Bruce Millar described Owad's behaviour as "consistent and persistent."

Owad has 14 months credit for the time he's already served. Defence lawyer Jeinis Patel says Owad is committed to treatment and has genuine remorse.

Going through pages of this crap leads one to believe not enough is being done
to route these creeps and prosecute them to the fullest/ The death penalty
should be considered they have ruined the children's lives and nothing is too
terrible a fate for them. I read this page it made me sick to my stomach.
I have twenty four grand children and four great grand kids and I can't even
fathom something like this happening to them Good God what kind of world are
we living in?

Once guilt is establish beyond ANY doubt there is only one solution for these animals - a rusty tin can lid to the testacles and leave them to bleed to death!

Two young children found chained and leashed outside a San Antonio home had suffered hundreds of scars and injuries from months, perhaps years, of abuse, a sheriff's official said Friday.

Doctors who treated the children after they were found April 29 determined they had old injuries indicating a long period of abuse. One of them also was suffering from hypothermia and had a broken arm resulting from the way she was tied to a garage door using a dog leash, Bexar County sheriff's spokesman James Keith said.

Authorities initially said the children were 2 and 3 years old, but Keith says they may be a year older.

So he could have gotten life but will be out in 15 or less? WTF indeed.....

A 23-year-old former seminary student who admitted he planned to adopt or purchase female infants in Mexico in order to sexually molest them was sentenced to nearly 16 years in prison on Friday, the Associated Press reported.

Joel Alexander Wright, from Columbus, Ohio, had faced a maximum sentence of life in prison after pleading guilty to a charge of attempted enticement of a minor on April 13, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

After entering the guilty plea, he received a sentence of 15 years, eight months, AP reported.

Wright admitted in the plea agreement that he authored sexually explicit emails in which he described his desire to assault little girls who were as young as infants and up to 4 years old, the release stated.

He also confessed that he placed ads on Craigslist Tijuana starting in November 2015, purporting to seek a tour guide. Upon being contacted, he confided that he wanted to “adopt/own a baby girl (under the age of 3) and I want to have intercourse with her after I own her but don’t be telling people that…I won’t pay until I have seen the baby and I will pay the parents then…the cheapest baby under 3 would be good,” the correspondence read, according to the release.

The person with whom he corresponded was a cooperating witness to authorities, federal prosecutors said.

In another email, this one to an undercover federal agent, Wright admitted he “picked up an infant pain relief med and a pretty outfit which I think should fit the 1 or 2 year old.” He further stated in the electronic mail that he would “try to find some lube here at the store that we can use.”

Wright traveled to San Diego from Ohio on January 29, arriving at the airport at 11:30 a.m. Upon deplaning, he called the undercover agent and notified the individual the flight had landed, prosecutors said.

He was then arrested.

In his possession were two cellphones and a duffle bag that contained baby clothes, sleep aids, bottles, toys, candy and lubricant, according to the release.

“There are no words to describe the horror that might have happened, had this man carried out what he intended to do – sexually exploit and assault innocent toddlers and infants,” U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy said in the release.

'This is the work of the devil'; U.S. mom allegedly slit 4 children's throats with butcher knife
Adrian Sainz, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
First posted: Saturday, July 02, 2016 08:29 PM EDT | Updated: Sunday, July 03, 2016 09:34 AM EDT
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Sheriff's deputies found a large butcher knife with what appeared to be blood on it in an apartment where a Tennessee mother killed her four children by cutting their throats, court documents say.
Shanynthia Gardner, 29, of Memphis, has been charged with four counts of first degree murder while committing aggravated child neglect in the deaths of her three daughters and one son -- all under the age of five. Their bodies were found after deputies entered her apartment in a gated community in unincorporated Shelby County on Friday. Neighbours and friends of the family attended a vigil to honour the victims on Saturday.
Gardner also faces four counts of first degree murder while committing aggravated child abuse; four counts of aggravated child neglect or endangerment; and four counts of aggravated child abuse. She is being held without bond, with an arraignment scheduled Tuesday.
An affidavit filed in Shelby County court by a sheriff's detective identified the victims as four-year-old Tallen Gardner; three-year-old Sya Gardner; two-year-old Sahvi Gardner; and six-month-old Yahzi Gardner. A fifth child, seven-year-old Dallen Clayton, fled the apartment and escaped the attack, the affidavit said. Dallen is Gardner's son from a previous marriage.
Gardner spoke by phone with her current husband, Martin Gardner, and acknowledged that she killed her children, the affidavit said. Attempts to reach him or relatives of the Gardners have been unsuccessful.
"This is a terrible act, an egregious act that has shocked, I believe, the community, and has shocked our staff to the core," Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham said Saturday.
Deputies were called to an apartment complex in unincorporated Shelby County on Friday afternoon. When they arrived at Shanynthia Gardner's apartment, they found her with superficial cuts to her neck and wrists, the affidavit said. Deputies also found four children with "severe lacerations to the throat," the document said.
Two children were found in the living room -- Yahzi was in her baby carrier and Sya was lying next to the carrier. The other two victims were in a bedroom.
The affidavit said Dallen was able to escape the apartment and run up to a man, yelling that his mother had stabbed his sister.
The man told officers that he saw Shanynthia Gardner come outside with a large knife in her hand, then re-enter the residence. Deputies found the knife in the apartment, the affidavit said.
Authorities have not divulged what circumstances they believe led to the killings. Oldham said investigators were trying to determine if Gardner has mental health problems.
The state Department of Children's Service has offered its assistance to local law enforcement, but has no record of interaction with the slain children, said spokesman Rob Johnson.
About 30 people attended an outdoor candlelight vigil at the apartment complex on Saturday evening. They prayed for the four children, the surviving boy, and Shanynthia Gardner. A pastor poured water from a decanter onto the ground, in remembrance of the victims.
Sonya Clayton, Dallen Clayton's grandmother, said she had not seen the boy's mother for a few years. She said she was shocked by the attack.
"She was a sweet young lady," Clayton said of Shanynthia Gardner. "What happened, I don't understand."
Later, Sonya Clayton said she forgives her former daughter-in-law.
"I know this is the work of the devil," Sonya Clayton said. "I know this is not Shanynthia. And I pray and I love Shanynthia."
Sonya Clayton said her son, Detrail Clayton, has not seen Dallen since the stabbings. She said her son is not doing well, and he wants to see Dallen soon. Sheriff's officials say the boy has been under protective supervision.
Neighbour Mona Hansen, who attended the vigil, became emotional when talking about how her own daughter adopted three girls after their brother was killed by a parent. Hansen called the killings of the four children in the apartment complex where she lives "heart-wrenching."
"Like the minister said, you don't know what they could have been in life," Hansen said of the Gardner children. "Their lives didn't even get started yet, before they were taken."

U.S. mother charged in 4 kids' deaths taken to mental institute
Adrian Sainz, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
First posted: Tuesday, July 05, 2016 04:08 PM EDT | Updated: Tuesday, July 05, 2016 04:21 PM EDT
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A Tennessee mother charged with fatally stabbing four of her children was taken to a mental health institute after a brief court appearance Tuesday, authorities said.
Shanynthia Gardner, 29, is accused of cutting the throats of her three daughters and one son, all younger than 5, on Friday. One 7-year-old escaped the attack in a suburban Memphis apartment.
Gardner was taken to Memphis Mental Health Institute after she went before a judge in a video hearing, Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesman Earle Farrell told The Associated Press.
The institute is a state psychiatric hospital where most patients have "a severe and persistent mental illness and are hospitalized on an emergency, involuntary basis," according to a state website. Farrell said he did not know what treatment she was receiving.
Gardner, who was wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, did not answer Judge L. Lambert Ryan's questions during her hearing. She has been charged with first-degree murder, child abuse and child neglect in the deaths of children.
Ryan waived Gardner's arraignment and scheduled a hearing for July 11. Attorney Craig Morton told the judge he is representing Gardner. Outside court, Morton declined to talk about the facts in the case.
"It's too early to be making comments on a case of this nature," Morton said.
Both he and prosecutor Jennifer Nichols plan to file a motion seeking to preserve evidence in the case, including information gathered from social media.
A handful of Gardner's relatives went to the courthouse, but they declined comment to reporters.
Authorities have not said why they think Gardner killed her children. Investigators have been looking into whether she has mental health problems. Friends and neighbours of the family have held vigils to remember the children.
"It's devastating," said Nichols, who also declined to discuss details of the case. "It's important not just to our office, but to the whole community."
Sheriff's officials say Gardner cut her children's throats Friday afternoon at her apartment in a gated community in unincorporated Shelby County. She acknowledged killing them in a phone conversation to their father, Martin Gardner, court documents say. A large butcher knife with what appeared to be blood on it was found in the apartment, the documents show.
When deputies arrived at the apartment, they found Gardner with superficial cuts to her neck and wrists, court documents said.
The victims were identified as 4-year-old Tallen Gardner; 3-year-old Sya Gardner; 2 year-old Sahvi Gardner; and 6-month old Yahzi Gardner. A fifth child, 7-year-old Dallen Clayton, escaped the attack, the documents said. He is Gardner's son from a previous marriage.
Dallen was able to flee the apartment and tell someone that his mother was stabbing his sister. Shanynthia Gardner was taken into custody by deputies shortly afterward.
This 2016 arrest photo provided by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office shows Shanynthia Gardner of Memphis, Tenn. Gardner is charged with fatally stabbing her four children in an apartment and is scheduled to appear before a judge by video for an arraignment Tuesday, July 5, 2016. 'Vampire' trucker allegedly kidnapped women to keep for sex slaves, used Dremel to grind their teeth
Washington Post
First posted: Tuesday, July 05, 2016 05:54 PM EDT | Updated: Tuesday, July 05, 2016 06:03 PM EDT
The woman told investigators she met Timothy Jay Vafeades at the Sapp Brothers truck stop in Salt Lake City. It was April 2012, and she got into his tractor-trailer after agreeing to get dinner with him, according to court documents.
But about 10 minutes into the drive, Vafeades told her that “they were not going to dinner and that she was going on the road with him for a week or more,” an FBI agent wrote in a criminal affidavit. “She reported that she knew she could not do anything.”
For months after that, investigators allege, Vafeades forced the woman to live with him, work on the truck — and have sex with him almost daily.
Vafeades told the woman “she was his ‘slave’ on the truck,” and he beat her often, according to the affidavit.
Vafeades had his own set of false teeth with vampire fangs on them.
Vafeades was eventually charged with kidnapping the woman and one other and transporting them for illegal sexual activity aboard his truck, dubbed the “Twilight Express.” Prosecutors alleged that he also kidnapped and sexually assaulted four other women over a span of two decades, subjecting them to beatings and holding them captive as he drove his truck across the country.
On Thursday, Vafeades, 56, agreed to a plea deal just days before his trial was to begin.
He pleaded guilty to the illegal sexual activity charges. The kidnapping charges were dropped in exchange.

The deal means Vafeades — referred to by local media as the “vampire” truck driver because of the fangs on false teeth he once wore — could face more than 20 years in prison.
In May, he also pleaded guilty to transportation of child pornography, which carries a five-year sentence.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Trina Higgins said she hoped the pleas will help bring some closure to the victims, the Associated Press reported. The agreements also mean victims will not have to testify at trial.
“That’s not something I can comment on, but if they wish to speak at sentencing, they’ll be allowed to, and I hope that we’ll hear some of their voices,” Higgins said, according to the Deseret News.
Prosecutors alleged that Vafeades held four more women captive, which was disclosed in a 2014 federal filing. But charges weren’t filed in those cases because of the statute of limitations, AP reported.
One of those alleged victims was working at a retail store when she met Vafeades around 2000, documents show.
He beat me with a belt as if I was a little 2-year-old getting spanked to the point where I should have passed out and died.
They became friends, and in 2005 she joined him for what she thought would be about a week on the truck, according to a federal filing.
Another alleged victim met Vafeades in 2008 when he was a patient at a hospice facility, prosecutors said. They got married two months later; while driving to Utah, he began assaulting her almost daily, the federal filing reads.
With both women, Vafeades took their identification, beat them, forced them to sleep naked and used a Dremel power tool to file down her teeth, prosecutors alleged. They both managed to escape the truck.
The case that brought the kidnapping and sex slave allegations against Vafeades dates back to May 2013. That year, a 19-year-old relative came to Salt Lake City to work for him on his semi, documents show.
But her first night in the truck, Vafeades engaged in sexual activity with the teen while she slept, documents show. A week after driving on the “Twilight Express” on out-of-state trucking jobs, the 19-year-old relative tried to get away, but Vafeades “grabbed her, hit her and strangled her until she blacked out,” the affidavit reads.
He held her captive for six months, prosecutors alleged, and sexually assaulted her, beat her and threatened to kill her if she left.
Vafeades forbade the 19-year-old from looking at anyone, held her identification cards and had her do paperwork on the truck for which she was never paid, documents allege.
As he did with other women he held captive, Vafeades used a Dremel power tool to file the 19-year-old’s teeth, documents allege. He also used an X-acto knife to chip the teen’s teeth “so she could wear false teeth that he ordered to put over her real teeth,” the affidavit reads. The woman told an FBI agent that he “did not like her crooked teeth and thought she had an ugly smile.”
“Vafeades had his own set of false teeth with vampire fangs on them,” the affidavit reads.
Three days after Vafeades beat and choked the 19-year-old relative, officers at a Minnesota weigh station noticed her bruises. They then found that Vafeades had a 1999 protective order that prohibited him from having any contact with the teen, court filings show.
Lawyers for Vafeades had argued that the protective order was no longer valid, so the 2014 arrest never should have happened, AP reported. But a judge ruled that it was a valid stop.
Officers seized hard drives from his truck, and FBI investigators found child pornography on them, the affidavit reads.
I shouldn’t be here. I should be dead and gone … there’s a higher power, there is a reason why I am here.
When news reports came out about the arrest in Minnesota, the woman Vafeades allegedly held captive in 2012 came forward. She told investigators about how they met at the Salt Lake City truck stop and how she was held captive for months after that, according to the affidavit.
The two had trucked to Utah, Florida, Nebraska and Texas, and she did trucking paperwork for which she was never paid, the affidavit reads. Vafeades tried to change the woman’s identity, authorities said, allegedly cutting and coloring her hair, keeping her driver’s license and forcing her to marry him.
“He also used a Dremel [tool] to file down one of her teeth,” the agent wrote in the affidavit.
He beat her often and threatened to kill her if she talked to anyone, authorities allege.
Eventually, the woman got away: Four months after she first got into Vafeades’s semi, officers at a Nebraska weigh station noticed her bruises, the affidavit reads.
She told them about an assault in Florida, and battery charges were filed there, according to court documents.
In 2014, CBS affiliate KUTV spoke with that victim, whom the station did not identify.
“Once we got in the truck, I thought we were going out to eat,” she told the station. “We had just got on the freeway, and I said, ‘Why are we going this way? There are no restaurants this way.’ ”
She also described the abuse she suffered.
“He beat me with a belt as if I was a little 2-year-old getting spanked to the point where I should have passed out and died,” she told KUTV.
She continued: “I shouldn’t be here. I should be dead and gone … there’s a higher power, there is a reason why I am here.”
Vafeades will formally be sentenced in November. When he appeared in a U.S. district court in Utah on Thursday, “he politely answered the judge’s questions and read aloud a legal description of the charges, but said little else,” AP reported.
