A Westmoreland County man who sexually abused a young girl in his basement from the time she was in diapers until age 4, and recorded it on videos that the U.S. attorney’s office describes as “hideous,” will spend the next 19 years in federal prison.

Thomas Deglau, 56, of Derry Township was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Mark Hornak, and the order was entered Friday.

Deglau, a country music performer in the Latrobe area, had pleaded guilty in April to a charge of producing child pornography, but federal prosecutors said his conduct went far beyond that of the typical child porn defendant.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Smolar said Deglau would have continued to molest the girl if not for the actions of his wife, who caught him in the basement naked while filming the girl in January 2014.

In pre-sentence filings, Ms. Smolar said the tapes are “hideous” and “extremely alarming” in that they show a history of Deglau’s sexual abuse of the girl from the time he changed her diapers until he was caught four years later. She said he groomed the young girl over time to satisfy his sexual needs.

“The young child plainly has been damaged irreparably,” she told the judge.

Man allegedly let 7 men sexually assault his young daughter for 2 years
8 men facing more than 500 child sex charges in Australia

PERTH, Australia -- An Australian man was accused Wednesday of allowing seven men to sexually abuse his 13-year-old daughter over the past two years, with police charging all eight men with more than 500 child sex offences.
Western Australia police arrested the men after receiving a tip-off from the public. Police say the father knew all of the men, and arranged for them to meet his daughter and subsequently assault her when she was between the ages of 11 and 13. The father is also accused of assaulting the girl.
The father and the other men, who range in age from 35 to 47, are facing 503 charges, including sexual penetration of a child under 13, stupefying with intent to commit a criminal offence and sexual servitude of a child.
Police Detective Superintendent Glenn Feeney, who described the abuse the girl suffered as "horrific," said one of the men had 200,000 videos and 4 million child pornography images. The victim was featured in 149 images, he said.
"It's disgusting material -- there are no words to describe it," Feeney said. "Any sex offence against a child is just beyond words."
The girl is now safe and receiving treatment, he said.
Police are still sifting through the material they seized to determine whether anyone else may have been involved.

He's long been suspected of slaughtering his neighbours' animals and eating their organs, and even digging up corpses of people recently buried and feasting on their body parts.
But a 38-year-old Nepalese man in a forest near the Indian border finally went too far, police said, when he killed a woman and ate parts of her.
The man — whom police refer to as Ramesh BK — was arrested Sunday for murder and cannibalism, reports Nepalese news site ekantipur.com.
Police say the man is known to be mentally unstable.
The woman, identified as Debaki BK, 56, was visiting the man's sister-in-law when she went missing, according to the report.
Her body was later found in a shed, missing her heart, liver and intestines.
"He (Ramesh) is said to (have) killed cattle in his neighbourhood to feed on their heart and liver in past," local police Deputy Supt. Ranjit Sing Rathour told ekantipur.com. "We are investigating what he did with the organs of Debaki after the murder."
Neighbours have also suspected Ramesh of cannibalizing the recently buried in local cemeteries, after their bodies were found exhumed, missing their heads and other parts.

Teen charged with murdering 8-year-old California girl

SAN FRANCISCO - A 15-year-old boy was charged as an adult on Wednesday with sexually assaulting and murdering an 8-year-old girl whose body was discovered in a recycling bin at a residential complex in Santa Cruz, California, officials said.
Adrian Jerry Gonzalez was charged with lying in wait before kidnapping and killing Madyson Middleton, who was last seen on Sunday evening riding a scooter at the Tannery Arts Center housing complex, Santa Cruz County District Attorney Jeffrey Rosell told reporters.
"Justice demands the charges that we filed," Rosell said at a morning news conference announcing the charges.
Police said Middleton knew the teen who lured her to his family's apartment at the center, which offers affordable housing to artists, and killed her.
The teen, who acted alone, concealed her body inside a recycling bin downstairs, according to police.
He was arrested on Monday night while watching detectives near the bin where Middleton's body was found, police said. Police said the girl was likely killed before even being reported missing.
Local, state and FBI agents helped by law enforcement dogs searched for Middleton in Santa Cruz, a seaside community about 60 miles (97 km) south of San Francisco, and local residents also canvassed the area where she was last seen.
Residents were shocked both by the killing and the arrest of Gonzalez, who was described by neighbors as a mild-mannered teen.
"He's a very, very nice boy," 60-year-old Geoffrey Nelson, who lives on the same floor as the teen, told the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper. "He is known for being really great with the yo-yo."
Gonzalez is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday and faces life in prison if convicted, Rosell said.

N.Y. teen accused of suffocating newborn son, then putting body in shopping bag

NEW YORK - An 18-year-old New York woman was indicted on murder charges on Thursday, two years after a retail store security guard found her carrying a dead newborn baby in a shopping bag, prosecutors said.
Tiona Rodriguez was charged with one count of second-degree murder for her son's death, which was ruled by the city's medical examiner a homicide caused by asphyxiation, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said in a statement.
"I am confident that the experienced homicide and child abuse prosecutors in my office will see that justice is served in this tragic case," Vance said.
Rodriguez gave birth to the 8-pound boy in the bathroom of a friend's apartment in Queens in October 2013, prosecutors said.
The next day, a security guard working at a Victoria's Secret store stopped Rodriguez after spotting her shoplifting, asked to look through her shopping bag and found the body inside, prosecutors said.
Rodriguez, who had hidden two previous births from her family, planned for weeks to kill the newborn, prosecutors said in bail documents.
Attorney Earl Ward, who is defending Rodriguez, says his client had no such plan and thought the child was a stillborn. She said she did not see him breathe or move after the delivery, Ward said.
"Our position is that it is a very sad and a very tragic case but it is simply not a case of murder," he said.
Ward said the prosecutors' lengthy delay in delivering a murder indictment indicated that there are problems with their theory of culpability.
Rodriguez faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison if convicted. She has been remanded without bail.

Father of Ohio child found decomposed in crib held on $1 mln bond

CLEVELAND - An Ohio judge ordered a father held on a $1 million bond Thursday after a cable installer discovered the badly decomposed body of a young child in a crib at his apartment and notified authorities, the Medina Police Department said.
Eric Warfel, 34, was arrested Wednesday after the body of 18-month-old Ember Warfel was found in her crib surrounded by bags of trash, apparently to cover up the smell of decomposition, police said. Medina is about 32 miles (52 km) south of Cleveland.
Police believe the girl died around June 18 but the cause of death is unknown. Warfel also has a 7-year-old daughter and may have a son who lives in New York state with the boy's mother.
Another daughter, Erin Delynn Warfel, died aged 5 months at an emergency room in March 2013 in a "manner undetermined," according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's website.
Warfel is charged with abuse of a corpse, a felony, for leaving the child in the crib after her death and not notifying the proper authorities, and may face additional charges, according to Medina Municipal Magistrate Linda Leggett.
Cocaine was found Thursday during a search of a motel room where Warfel was living, according to a police statement.
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's office.

Man Fathers Daughter’s Child, Arrested For Sexual Abuse

Danny Richard Minor, 40, of The Colony, was sentenced to life confinement without the possibility of parole for three counts of Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Young Child and life confinement for two counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child, announced Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis.

From 2002 until 2009 when Minor lived in Plano, he molested two related children and an unrelated child. One child disclosed the abuse in 2009, but conflicting statements prevented detectives from moving forward at that time.

Minor cut off ties with Plano and moved to The Colony where the abuse continued. The case was reactivated in June 2014 when a second child came forward and provided corroborating information for the 2009 disclosure. Two additional cases resulted from that disclosure. Minor was arrested and a search warrant was obtained for his DNA. A paternity test confirmed that Minor is the biological father of his daughter’s child.

Idaho mom accused of trying to drown infant in irrigation ditch

SALMON, Idaho - An Idaho woman has been charged with trying to drown her infant son in an irrigation ditch - with her 4-year-old daughter looking on - before a passerby waded into the water, snatched the baby and ushered both children to safety, police said on Monday.
The mother, Regina Dilworth, 22, of Nampa, was slated to make an initial court appearance on Monday on two felony counts of injury to a child, according to Joe Ramirez, a police sergeant in the town of Nampa, southwest of Boise.
The incident was reported to police Saturday morning by residents of the Nampa neighbourhood where the alleged drowning attempt occurred, he said.
The woman who came to the infant's rescue told investigators she was driving in the area when she spotted Dilworth walking down the middle of a road, seemingly directionless, carrying the baby and accompanied by her 4-year-old daughter, Ramirez said.
The driver, whose identity was not immediately made public, said she stopped her car and offered help to Dilworth, whose only response, she told police, was a vacant stare. The driver then pulled off the road and was seeking to circle back to the trio when they appeared to have vanished, police said.
She then jumped out of her vehicle and raced to the bank of an irrigation ditch that runs beside a pasture, reaching the edge in time to see Dilworth pushing the 9-month-old boy under the water, according to Ramirez.
The driver told investigators she then grabbed the baby and led his older sister away as neighbours ran to the ditch and stopped Dilworth from trying to submerge herself in the water, which was several feet deep in places, police said.
Police officers arriving on the scene said Dilworth appeared incoherent and under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Ramirez said.
She was taken to a hospital for evaluation and toxicology tests before being booked into the Canyon County jail. Her children were taken into protective custody, police said.
Ramirez praised the woman who intervened to save the infant.
"If she had called police and waited for them to arrive, who knows where that child would be now," he said.

Arizona man says he beheaded wife 'to get the evil out': Police

PHOENIX - An Arizona man who admitted to decapitating his wife and her two dogs in a bloody incident last month in Phoenix told authorities he was attempting "to get the evil out" of her, according to court documents released on Monday.
Kenneth Dale Wakefield, 43, also told police that he had smoked marijuana and the designer drug Spice about an hour before the gruesome killings in a Phoenix apartment on the morning of July 25, the documents showed.
Wakefield, a transient with a history of mental illness who also maimed himself in the incident, was booked into a Maricopa County jail Aug. 1 on one count of first-degree murder and two counts of animal cruelty after being released from a local hospital. He is being held on $2 million bond.
In court papers, police said Wakefield told them during an interview that he stabbed his 49-year-old wife, Trina Heisch, multiple times before decapitating her, and killed the dogs by cutting their heads off.
"He said he was trying to get the evil out of Trina," police said in a probable cause statement filed in Maricopa County Superior Court.
Police said the Phoenix man then severed his left arm at the elbow and gouged out one of his eyes before being discovered.
The blood-splattered scene was found by a neighbor who told police he was checking on the couple he knew had mental illness issues.
The neighbor said he saw Wakefield naked, with part of his arm cut off and his right eye missing, when he opened the door to the apartment. The neighbor then called police.
Officers said they entered the home and found the headless Heisch in a bedroom closet along with the two dogs.
Large amounts of blood was spread across the floors, cabinets and walls of the apartment, police said. Several bloody knives were recovered.
Investigators said both Wakefield and his wife had histories of mental illness, domestic violence and drug abuse.
In a video also released on Monday, Wakefield can be seen during his initial court appearance on Saturday lowering his head, then putting his right hand to his mouth and emitting a wail as the prosecutor spoke.
He is expected to appear in court for a status conference on Aug. 7.
Wakefield was arrested in 2003 for attempting to kill a family member. Heisch was arrested in March for domestic violence assault, when it was alleged she tried to stab Wakefield, police said.
Family members told police that the two married after meeting in a mental health facility.
This booking photo provided by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office shows 43-year-old Kenneth Dale Wakefield. Investigators say Wakefield killed and decapitated his 49-year-old wife, Trina Heisch, and their two dogs and then inflicted injuries on himself, including a severed left forearm and a missing eye. Perv nurse insists he's no 'sexual deviant'
By Sam Pazzano, Toronto Sun First posted: Tuesday, August 04, 2015 08:34 PM EDT | Updated: Tuesday, August 04, 2015 11:32 PM EDT
An emergency room nurse who molested a female patient while photographing her naked body under the guise of taking “police photos” insisted Tuesday he’s not a “sexual deviant.

“I don’t know why I did what I did,” an emotional Angelino “Gino” Aguas told Justice Ken Campbell at his sentencing hearing. “This is not in my nature. I’m very sorry.”

Aguas, 48, was convicted of sexual assault for fondling one patient and convicted of voyeurism for photographing another woman, who was unconscious on a gurney — both at Toronto Western Hospital.

“I’ve never felt so humiliated and violated in my life,” said the fondling victim’s statement which was read in court by Crown attorney Rebecca Law. “When I realized that I was being assaulted ..., I felt shocked, confused, violated and creeped out.”

Law urged Campbell to impose a sentence of up to two years less a day in jail, plus a “lengthy probation” on the first-time offender.

Campbell will pass sentence on Sept. 16.

Court heard that the sexual assault victim had been thrown from a moving car by an ex-lover early on May 22, 2012. She was treated by Aguas, who worked as an emergency nurse for 10 years at Western.

The victim asked Aguas if she should remove her clothing. When he indicated she should undress, the victim assumed he’d “document her injuries for a police report,” said an agreed statement of facts.

Aguas looked at her naked body and said, “Wow.” Using a cellphone camera, he photographed and “directed her to pose in different positions” and placed his hands on her hips, legs and buttocks. Aguas was also surreptitiously making a video recording.

She became suspicious “when he told her to bend over and spread her buttocks,” court heard.

Aguas complimented her and advised her not to tell anyone “or else he could lose his job,” court heard.

The victim “realized she had been sexually assaulted” and reported it to the Toronto Police.

Officers discovered the videotape of the molestation plus a nude cellphone photograph of an unconscious woman on May 20, 2012.

Police identified the unconscious woman, who never consented to the photo.

Aguas’ lawyer, Jason Rabinovitch, said his client has suffered greatly and will never work as a nurse again. Rabinovitch asked the judge to impose a jail term ranging from six months to one year.

Child sex allegations against former U.K. PM

First posted: Tuesday, August 04, 2015 12:47 PM EDT | Updated: Tuesday, August 04, 2015 01:02 PM EDT
LONDON - Police forces in two further British regions said on Tuesday they were examining allegations of historical child sexual abuse against the late former prime minister Edward Heath.
The revelations by police in Jersey and in Kent came a day after detectives in Wiltshire, southwest England, appealed for witnesses or victims who might be able to support allegations of child sexual abuse against Heath, who died in 2005 at age 89.
Wiltshire police said on Tuesday they had received "a number of calls" as a result of that appeal but declined to elaborate.
Heath, a keen yachtsman and musician, was prime minister between 1970 and 1974 and leader of the Conservative Party for 10 years. He was replaced in 1975 by Margaret Thatcher, with whom he had a highly fraught relationship.
Heath was unmarried and had no family. The Sir Edward Heath Charitable Foundation, which runs a museum at his former home in Salisbury, Wiltshire, told the BBC it welcomed the inquiry and "wholeheartedly believe (it) will clear (his) name.
"We will cooperate fully with the police in their inquiries," a foundation spokesman said.
Heath is the latest high-profile British political figure to have been linked to child sexual abuse allegations that have been growing in scope since 2012, when the late BBC TV presenter Jimmy Savile was shown to have abused hundreds of victims for decades, using the cover of his celebrity.
SAILING
In May, police investigating the various allegations across the country said more than 1,400 people had been named as suspects including 261 described as "people of public prominence", among them dozens of politicians and TV stars.
On Monday, Britain's police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), said it was to investigate allegations that detectives in Wiltshire - where Heath lived for much of his life - failed to pursue a criminal prosecution when a person threatened to raise accusations that Heath may have been involved in offences concerning children.
It did not elaborate.
The IPCC said it would also examine whether Wiltshire Police subsequently took any steps to investigate those claims.
On Tuesday, police on Jersey in the Channel Islands, where Heath used to go sailing, said they had been investigating claims against him. "Sir Edward Heath does feature as part of Operation Whistle, currently investigating historical allegations of abuse in Jersey," they said in a statement.
Shortly afterwards, Kent police in eastern England said they too were examining an allegation. "Kent Police (have) today received a report of a sexual assault having been committed in East Kent in the 1960s," they said in a statement. "The victim has named Sir Edward Heath in connection with the allegation."
Detectives were making initial enquiries to obtain a full account from the victim.
The BBC said London's Metropolitan Police had also been investigating child abuse allegations against Heath as part of inquiries but a spokesman for the force declined to comment. (Reporting by Stephen Addison; Editing by Tom Heneghan)

Man accused of dismembering wife, kids, mom

Russian authorities are searching for a man wanted for hacking up his six children, their pregnant mother and his own mom with an axe in a horrific mass killing that's shocked the country.
Police said they found the children’s dismembered body parts in plastic bags in their apartment in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, about 400 km east of Moscow.
According to national media, they had gone to the home after teachers reported some of the children, all under the age of six, hadn't shown up for school in a few days.
One report suggested their pregnant mother ran into the streets, screaming her husband was killing them, but nobody called police.
According to some Russian news reports, the body of the suspect's own mother was also found hastily buried outside her nearby home.
Police are on the hunt for Oleg Belov, 51.
Neighbours told Russian news site LifeNews he was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist church, but was recently excommunicated for adultery and left his family.
Belov's mother-in-law, Valentina Zaitseva, told Russian media he was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Police believe the killings were planned, Russian newswire TASS reported.
The last time their teachers saw the children, Belov had picked them up from kindergarten.
Zaitseva told the newswire fights were common in the home.
“Fights often happened in the family. (Belov) constantly beat up his wife and children. Yulia (his wife) kept sending me photos of her bruises,” she told TASS.

Florida triple murder being investigated as ritualistic killings: Police
Killings may be connected to blue moon, sheriff says

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A triple homicide in Florida is being investigated as a possible ritualistic killing connected to the recent blue moon, a sheriff said Tuesday.
The bodies of Voncile Smith, 77, and her sons Richard Smith, 49, and John Smith, 47, were discovered Friday in their Pensacola-area home, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said. He said investigators believe the family was killed the previous Tuesday, July 28, about 7 p.m.
"Initial research had led us to believe it was a ritualistic killing," Morgan said, adding that police have identified a "person of interest" in the case.
Asked to elaborate, Morgan replied, "The method of the murder -- blunt force trauma ... positioning of the bodies -- and our person of interest has some ties to a faith or religion that is indicative of that. The time of death on Tuesday also coincides with what's referred to as a blue moon, which occurs every three years."
All three victims were struck multiple times with a claw hammer and had their throats slit, and Richard Smith also had a gunshot to his right ear, Morgan said.
The blue moon, a rare second full moon in a single month, occurred on Friday, July 31, however, not last Tuesday. The sheriff did not explain the discrepancy and his office did not return a telephone call seeking clarification.
Richard Smith was employed by the Department of Homeland Security and worked at Naval Air Station Pensacola, but officials with the Naval Criminal Investigative Services "have determined there are no issues involving ... national security elements," Morgan said.

New extradition hearing for accused in cyber sex abuse
By Sam Pazzano, Toronto Sun First posted: Wednesday, August 05, 2015 07:34 PM EDT | Updated: Wednesday, August 05, 2015 10:04 PM EDT
TORONTO - A Stouffville medical student who allegedly blackmailed an American teen into sexually abusing her younger sister while he watched via Skype is now facing a new extradition bid.
Marco “Mark” Viscomi, 30, is wanted in Virginia Beach, where he’s accused of orchestrating a 70-minute ordeal with the teens in January 2012 from his parents’ Stouffville home.
The Ontario Court of Appeal quashed the initial extradition request in June. But the federal Crown launched a second extradition immediately, keeping Viscomi in jail where he will have languished for exactly three years as of Saturday.
Viscomi will be back in Ontario Superior Court on Sept. 8.
This latest extradition bid includes the testimony of an American cyber-crime specialist Paul Wolpert.
In March 2012, the special agent with U.S. Homeland Security executed a search warrant at Viscomi’s Chatham home. Wolpert seized Viscomi’s laptop computer and hard drive, collecting evidence that linked him to the horrific allegations, the documents alleged.
Viscomi, a medical student in Australia, was taking an elective, working at the local hospital and living in Chatham at the time, court heard.
After examining two thumbnail images on Viscomi’s hard drive. Wolpert met with the girls in their Virginia Beach home “to confirm those images were images of them,” court documents alleged.
Viscomi was staying with his parents in January 2012 when he allegedly used the username “Jamie Paisley,” to sexually exploit the teen girls. Viscomi initially posed as a chat room “friend” who would safeguard the girl’s computer.
Then, Viscomi allegedly sent a “Trojan” virus that he warned could destroy the 17-year-old’s computer unless she complied with his sexual demands in front of her webcam, court heard.
The abuse allegedly escalated into what an Ontario Court judge described as a “sadistic, sexualized conduct with children which verges on torture.”
OPP officers searched Viscomi’s Stouffville home on March 21, 2012 after tracing his Internet usage back to that address. But officers learned that Mark Viscomi had moved back to Chatham a few days earlier, so a second search warrant was obtained and executed by Wolpert at the medical student’s apartment.

LOS ANGELES -- A healthy baby with the umbilical cord still attached has been found abandoned in a stroller on a Los Angeles street.
KNBC-TV says local residents saw the stroller near a church south of downtown Monday night but thought it was empty. Police were only called Tuesday afternoon.
Police say the baby was examined at a hospital and is in good condition.
Investigators will try to find the mother.
Los Angeles County's "Safe Surrender" law allows a parent or guardian to give up an infant at a hospital or fire station if the child is no more than three days old and shows no signs of abuse.

'Ritualistic' killings of mother, 2 sons may be tied to recent blue moon: Sheriff

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Police say a Florida woman and her two adult sons were bludgeoned and had their throats slit in a witchcraft ritual killing connected to last week's blue moon.
All three victims -- 77-year-old Voncile Smith, 49-year-old Richard Smith and 47-year-old John Smith -- were struck multiple times with a claw hammer before their throats were slit, and Richard Smith also had a gunshot to his right ear, police said.
While not getting into details, police say the murder scene — the way the bodies were positioned and other elements of it — makes it clear what they are dealing with.
"It's witchcraft, I'll say that right now," Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan told the Pensacola News Journal. "You know, there are different factions of that. While it doesn't bother me to release that particular thing, we most assuredly do not want to defame or demean any particular practice, if you will."
A person of interest has "some ties to a faith or religion that is indicative of that," he added.
Morgan also said the time of death last Tuesday coincides with the eve of a blue moon — a full moon that appears twice in one month. It only occurs every three years.
While no formal significance is attached to a blue moon in most wiccan traditions, it is considered a time of particular significance. According to paganwiccan.about.com, "some covens only perform initiations at the time of a blue moon."
The sheriff noted that both men were "very tall" and were "potentially very physically powerful." There were no signs of forced entry and investigators found a large amount of cash inside a safe at the home, which led them to rule out robbery as a motive.
Morgan said the victims were known to be "very reclusive, very secretive" and no neighbours they spoke to have ever been in their home.
The bodies were discovered Friday in their Pensacola-area home.
Richard Smith was employed by the Department of Homeland Security and worked at Naval Air Station Pensacola.

MOSCOW -- Russian police have arrested a man suspected of killing and dismembering his six young children along with his wife and mother.
The suspect, Oleg Belov, was wounded by police gunfire while resisting arrest and remained in stable condition Wednesday after a surgery, according to local health officials.
The federal Investigative Committee said the dismembered remains of the children, all under the age of six, were discovered Tuesday in the family's apartment in the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The body of his pregnant wife also was found in the apartment.
At a separate location, police found remains of a woman believed to be his mother.
Police arrested the suspect late Tuesday in the Vladimir region, where he was hiding in his mother-in-law's home. Police suspect he planned to kill her too.

Russian senior kept diary of her horrific serial killings: Cops

A Russian senior who confessed to killing and dismembering an elderly woman in her care reportedly kept a diary of at least 12 other victims over the past 20 years.
Tamara Samsonova, 68, is suspected of beheading and hacking up all her victims in St. Petersburg — Russia's second biggest city — and told police the gruesome details of her crimes, according to Russian media.
Investigators suspect her husband, who went missing in 2005, might be among them.
Local media have given Samsonova the nickname "Babushka Yaga" — a child-eating witch in Russian folklore.
If the entries she kept in her journal, written in German, English and Russian, are true, the monstrous handle would be fitting.
Samsonova would be one of the most brutal serial killers in Russian history.
Local police announced Samsonova's arrest Tuesday, detailing how she allegedly dismembered the body of 78-year-old Valentina Ulanova, a woman she'd been caring for. Police said she put the body parts in plastic sheets and took them to a scenic pond nearby. She allegedly put Ulanova's head in a kitchen pot.
Police found some of the body parts near the pond Sunday.
Local media released several screen shots of what they say is security camera footage of Samsonova moving the woman's body from her building.
According to Russian tabloid newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda, it took the senior eight trips and an hour and 40 minutes to haul out all the packages.
Police continue to investigate the diary, but have already charged Samsonova with the murder of a 44-year-old man who had rented a room from her.
The man's torso was found in the same neighbourhood 12 years ago and police reportedly found evidence of the killing in Samsonova's apartment, as well as a description of him in her diary.
"I killed a lodger named Volodya, cut him into pieces in the bathroom with a knife, and laid his body in wrapping and scattered him in the Frunze district," she told police, according to Fontanka.ru.
According to AFP news service, police found a metal saw and traces of blood in a bath at Samsonova's home, along with books on astrology and black magic.
Samsonova has reportedly had a history of mental illness. She's been committed to a hospital for evaluation while police investigate.
She told police she was a former ballet dancer and actress, but later admitted she was a retired hotel worker.

Suspected serial killing granny may have eaten parts of her victims

Russian police sources have reportedly told the Daily Mail U.K. their infamous suspected serial killing granny, Tamara Samsonova, who confessed to 11 gruesome murders in her diary, may have eaten parts of her victims.
The 68-year-old pensioner was arrested in St. Petersburg last week after security footage showed what appeared to be Samsonova hauling plastic-wrapped body parts from her home to dump by a nearby pond.
The parts, police say, belonged to Valentina Ulanova, 79, a woman in her care.
According to Russian police, she confessed to drugging the woman and cutting her into pieces with a hacksaw while she was still alive.
A diary, which she kept with her books on black magic and astrology, supposedly details at least 10 other similar killings.
The Investigative Committee — the national police force in Russia that deals with serious crime — isn't revealing the details of the diary, but the Daily Mail said it includes references to eating parts of her victims.
Police sources told the paper she had a penchant for lungs.
When asked directly about the cannibal allegations, a police spokesman would only say: "It is not excluded."
Samsonova is being held in custody while police continue to investigate the murders details in her diary. She is also now suspected of killing her husband, who was reported missing in 2005.

‘It’s almost by the grace of god that this child did not expire’: Judge
By Dean Pritchard, Winnipeg Sun

WINNIPEG - A Winnipeg teen who snatched his 21-month old niece from a drunken house party and then abandoned her in a recycling bin on a frigid January night has received the maximum youth sentence of two years custody and community supervision.
“It’s almost by the grace of god that this child did not expire,” Judge Lynn Stannard told the 17-year-old accused Thursday.
The boy pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing bodily harm and child abandonment for the Jan. 1, 2015 incident.
The boy received credit for six months already served, reducing his remaining sentence to 18 months. The boy also pleaded guilty to assaulting another youth while in custody and was sentenced to one year supervised probation.
Court heard the accused admitted in a statement to police he had been drinking heavily when a fight broke out between several partygoers at his sister’s Flora Avenue home.
The fight had spilled out onto the street when the accused snatched his niece and ran out of the house. The youth twice fell on the girl, causing her serious injury, before abandoning her in a recycling bin on Pritchard Avenue.
The accused returned to his sister’s home and “pretended to be concerned” as others searched for the missing child, Crown attorney Lisa Carson told court.
In an interview with police, the boy said he hid the girl in the recycling bin because he did not want his sister to see the girl’s injuries. The boy said he was concerned for the child’s well-being and had intentions of taking her to his mother’s home before falling on her.
A party-goer involved in the initial dispute discovered the crying baby, took her home and called police.
The baby was taken to hospital suffering a fractured skull, bleeding in the brain, multiple contusions and “road rash” all over her body.
“Alcohol clearly played a major role here,” said defence lawyer Katherine Dowle. “I do think (the accused) had a good intent initially.”
Carson said early suspicions there may have been a sexual motive to the incident proved unfounded.
The child has since recovered from her injuries and is now in foster care.

B.C. man killed ex-girlfriend because she was possessed by a demon

KAMLOOPS, B.C. -- A B.C. Supreme Court judge has ordered a psychiatric assessment for a man who claims he killed his ex-girlfriend because he was in the "fight of his life" with a demon.
Christopher Butler has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Deanne Wheeler, saying he strangled her with a rope saw and cord and beat her with a rock before stabbing her to death.
B.C. Supreme Court has heard Butler, 41, invited Wheeler to his apartment on Dec. 30, 2014 before killing her.
He went to the RCMP detachment and told police he was waiting for her with the rope saw and wanted to murder her because she was possessed.
Despite those admissions, Justice Keith Bracken said Thursday that there is uncertainty about whether Butler's mental state at the time allowed him to form intent to murder.
Butler told officers he wanted to plead guilty, but he has refused legal assistance and represented himself in court.
Bracken noted that Butler has consistently questioned in court whether he is not criminally responsible by reason of a mental disorder.
"What I killed was not the body of Deanne, but what was inside her," Butler said during one court appearance.
Butler will be sent to the provincial forensic psychiatric hospital for a 30-day assessment. He has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, mood disturbance and delusional thinking,
Crown lawyer Alex Janse presented evidence through text messages of Butler's increasing jealously and controlling behaviour in the weeks before Wheeler was killed.
Janse said he coaxed the woman to meet him at his apartment on the pretext that they should remain friends.
He told police he strangled Wheeler, describing her as a demon and saying: "When it entered my apartment, I set down the coffee it had bought. We went forward into the living room. It turned around and said, 'You will no longer call me Satan,' and its eyes went huge and black . . . I feared for my life and said, 'Die, demon, die.'"
Butler complained in court that there was no way to test Wheeler for possession by evil spirits, making a comparison to medical staff trying to determine rabies in a dog by killing it and then testing for the virus.
Butler told an undercover police operator placed in jail immediately after his arrest that he knew before Wheeler arrived at his apartment that he would kill her.
"He also commented that demons breathe the same air that we do and that you have to cut off the air supply," Janse said.
Butler told Bracken that he understands his crime.
"I did kill Deanna Wheeler. That's why I'm here to take responsibility," he said.
"Deanna was a good person. She was a human being. I don't understand," Butler said. "At the same time, I'm a victim in this."
Court heard that on three occasions, he went to Wheeler's home, where she lived with her parents, in the middle of the night. He was turned away one time by her father.
At another time, he wrote "I love you" all over a truck in front of her house. He also left notes and phoned her repeatedly.

Police find body of missing pregnant woman in her Quebec home, partner charged

SAINT-HYACINTHE, Que. -- The partner of a pregnant woman found dead in her home near Montreal was formally charged Friday with first-degree murder.
Alexandre Gendron, 35, was arraigned in St-Hyacinthe, about 60 kilometres east of Montreal, one day after Cheryl Bau-Tremblay's body was found in her home in Beloeil.
Bau-Tremblay, who was five months pregnant, had been reported missing since Saturday and was last seen that day leaving her home.
Crown prosecutor Nancy Potvin said Friday police spoke to many witnesses and that Gendron was questioned for several hours on Thursday.
Police have not revealed how Bau-Tremblay died or where her body was found inside the house.
An autopsy should reveal which day she died.
Gendron is scheduled to return to court Sept. 15.

B.C court appealing case of father who sexually abused kids in foster care

VANCOUVER -- A mother who won a lawsuit against the British Columbia government after social workers enabled her estranged husband to molest their toddler in foster care says the province's decision to appeal the ruling is cruel and sadistic.
The Justice Ministry said it filed documents Friday seeking clarity from the Court of Appeal of B.C. A judge found last month that social workers knowingly violated a court order and allowed unsupervised access to a father who had sexually abused his other kids.
"I think it's completely rude, and inhumane for them to go on against little children who have been hurt so terribly," the mother, known in court documents as J.P., said in a statement.
She said the Ministry of Children and Family Development has been hurting her family since 2009, when it falsely accused her of being mentally ill and seized her children.
"What they have done for six years and now are continuing to do is cruel and sadistic. Like the people running the MCFD. We are suffering because of them."
B.C. Supreme Court Justice Paul Walker ruled last month the ministry showed "reckless disregard" when it failed to investigate the kids' claims that their father had sexually abused them.
J.P. and her former husband, identified as B.G., have four children, born between 2002 and 2008.
Walker ruled in a custody trial in 2012 that B.G. had sexually abused his three eldest children. In his recent ruling, he found the man had also molested his youngest child while the girl was in foster care.
Children's Minister Stephanie Cadieux said government lawyers advised her the trial judge erred in a number of areas and that an appeal was warranted.
"I want to make clear that today's decision is not about the family involved, but about every family that the ministry may interact with in the future," she said in a statement.
Cadieux, who declined interviews, said the appeal will not impact former senior civil servant Bob Plecas's review of the case. She said any staff concerns that arise will be examined by a separate human resources investigation.
But Doug Donaldson, the Opposition NDP's critic for the Children's Ministry, said the appeal "completely guts" the review. Plecas already lacked the ability to compel testimony, and his powers will be further hindered by an ongoing court case, he said.
"What it seems to be is that the internal review was a sideshow and an attempt to deflect attention," Donaldson said.
Children and youth representative Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond said the ministry didn't consult the mother before announcing the review and J.P. has filed a complaint with the privacy commissioner.
The mom learned of the appeal through media on Friday, Turpel-Lafond said.
"There could have been a more respectful way to do this," Turpel-Lafond said. "She feels quite harmed."
The notice of appeal filed Friday is sealed because it includes family members' full names. The province said its comprehensive arguments will be publicly available and filed within 90 days.
J.P.'s lawyer, Jack Hittrich, said it's disturbing that the ministry's role is to protect children but it refuses to take responsibility for repeatedly failing a mother and her four kids.
"This ministry has done everything to vilify J.P., place her children in danger, allow the youngest to be sexually abused in breach of a court order," he said in a statement.
"The one thing that can be said is that this ministry has been very consistent in its refusal to abide by the law or court rulings."

NEW YORK - A month-old baby was found dead after possibly being thrown out of a fourth-floor window in the New York borough of Queens, police said Friday morning.
The infant's body was found before dawn in the courtyard of a fourth-floor residential building in the Richmond Hill neighbourhood, police said.
A 911 caller alerted authorities and emergency medical services found the baby unconscious and unresponsive, pronouncing him dead at the scene. The newborn had suffered head trauma.
The New York Police Department was investigating the circumstances of the death, said spokeswoman Detective Annette Markowski.
The medical examiner will determine the cause of death, she said.

Georgia women arrested on suspicion of caging special-needs children

A mother was charged with child cruelty and false imprisonment after authorities said her special needs children, an 11-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl, had been kept in homemade cages, investigators said on Friday.
The boy was found on Thursday in one of two cages inside a house in Chatsworth, Georgia, 90 miles north of Atlanta, said Greg Ramey, special agent in charge of the regional field office for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The girl was not restrained when authorities searched the house in response to two emergency calls. But she also had been in a cage "from time to time," Ramey said.
Their mother, Stephanie Stone, 34, was arrested and charged with cruelty to children, false imprisonment and drug possession, he said. Another woman in the house, Wanda Redfern, 49, was charged with child cruelty and false imprisonment.
The boy was being held inside two metal-frame twin beds placed on top of each other and secured with metal hinges and plastic zip ties, said Ramey, describing it a "makeshift cage."
He said the other cage had been fashioned out of a daybed, with wooden rails, metal shelving and a wooden platform on top.
Ramey said the children both had disabilities but did not elaborate. They were placed under the supervision of child protective services and relatives.
He said another person may be charged in the case.

Mother kills 1-month-old baby by tossing off balcony: Prosecutor

NEW YORK -- A newborn baby was killed when his mother tossed him from a fourth-floor window of their New York City apartment building and he landed on courtyard pavement 40 feet (12 metres) below, a prosecutor said Saturday in announcing her arrest on a murder charge.
Rashida Chowdhury, 21, was awaiting arraignment a day after 3-week-old Rizwan Ahmad was found dead in a onesie on the barren courtyard of the building in the borough of Queens.
"This is a truly horrific and disturbing case," Queens chief prosecutor Richard Brown said. "The alleged actions of the defendant are totally incomprehensible."
Medical examiners ruled the baby's death a homicide, saying he died of blunt impact injuries and had suffered skull fractures and lacerations to his brain, liver and spleen.
Neighbour Mazol Ilyayeva told reporters she heard something fall around 4 a.m. Friday and then saw the child's lifeless, bloody body in the courtyard.
"I couldn't move. I couldn't scream," she said. "I couldn't even look. ... It's horrible."
She said the parents had seemed stricken as they stood in the courtyard afterward.
"The mom was holding the husband," Ilyayeva said. "Their faces were blank."
It was unclear if Chowdhury had a lawyer who could comment on the charges; no telephone number could immediately be found for her Queens apartment.

Man held in killing of 8 had previously lived at home

HOUSTON -- A family of six children and two parents were fatally shot in the head at a Houston home by a man with a violent criminal history who had previously been in a contentious relationship with the mother, authorities said Sunday.
David Conley, 48, was charged with capital murder in the deaths. Most of the victims had been handcuffed and some had been shot multiple times, said Sgt. Craig Clopton, the lead investigator for the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
The dead were identified as Dewayne Jackson, 50; his wife, Valerie Jackson, 40; and their children Dewayne, 10; Honesty, 11; Caleb, 9; Trinity, 7; and Jonah, 6. Also killed was a 13-year-old, Nathaniel, who was believed to be Conley's son from the relationship with Valerie Jackson. The sheriff's office had earlier said that there were three adults and five children killed.
"We do not -- cannot -- fully comprehend the motivation of an individual that would take the lives of so many innocent people. Especially the lives of the young ones," said Chief Deputy Tim Cannon of the sheriff's office. "The killer's motives appear to be related to a dispute with Valerie, who was his former domestic partner."
Conley, who is being held in Harris County Jail, didn't appear at a court hearing Sunday where an arrest affidavit was read. The judge denied him bond. Conley doesn't yet have an attorney.
Authorities were first alerted about a problem at the home when a relative of Valerie Jackson's contacted the sheriff's office to conduct a welfare check.
"Upon arrival, deputies made multiple attempts to establish contact with residents inside the home. No contact was made during the primary attempts to investigate the welfare of those residents," Cannon said.
After authorities learned that Conley, who had once lived in the home, had a warrant for his arrest for an assault charge, the sheriff's office High Risk Operations Unit was called.
"While awaiting response for the (unit), the body of an unidentified child was observed through a window at the residence," he said. "Deputies on scene forced entry into the home and were immediately met with gunfire. The deputies withdrew from the home ... and awaited the arrival of the" unit.
A standoff ensued for several hours between Conley and authorities until Conley surrendered, said Clopton.
Investigators declined to say when on Saturday the victims were shot or if any victims were alive when deputies first tried to enter the home.
Conley told authorities that he discovered on Saturday morning that the locks had been changed at the home after he had moved out. He entered the home through an unlocked window, according to the affidavit.
Court records show Conley's criminal history dates back to at least 1988, with the most recent incident last month, when was charged with assault. In court documents, authorities said Conley had been arrested for allegedly assaulting Valerie Jackson. The attack happened at the home where the bodies were found; documents say the two were dating.
Court documents said Conley pushed Valerie Jackson's head against a refrigerator multiple times after she tried to stop him from disciplining her son with a belt. The case was still pending.
In 2013, he was charged with aggravated assault for threatening Jackson with a knife. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine months in the county jail.
In 2000, he was arrested for retaliation, accused of putting a knife to his then-girlfriend, threatening to kill her, her baby and himself. That came after she filed an assault charge against him for cutting her with a knife and punching her in the face. He was sentenced to five years in prison for retaliation. It was unclear if that woman was Valerie Jackson.
Clopton said Valerie Jackson and Conley were in a relationship, which ended, and "then (Dewayne Jackson) began a relationship with Valerie, which led to five children. At some point that relationship ended and the defendant began another relationship with Valerie. At some point that broke down," Clopton said.
Authorities declined to comment on assault charges Conley had faced in the past in connection with his relationship with Valerie Jackson or say what prompted relatives to worry and request that deputies be sent to the home on Saturday.
The area around the home was cordoned off Sunday, with sheriff's deputies coming in and out of the house and the medical examiner's office later removing the bodies.
Neighbour Dalila Mercado said she didn't know the residents of the house well but would occasionally say hello to Valerie Jackson and see her children waiting to catch the school bus.

HOUSTON -- A man with a violent criminal history entered a Houston home through an unlocked window and fatally shot a woman he'd previously dated, her husband and six children, including a boy believed to be his own son, authorities said.
David Conley, 48, is charged with capital murder in the deaths and is set to make his first court appearance Monday morning before a trial judge. A 20-year-old woman is dead after her father refused to allow male lifeguards to save her to maintain her honour, officials in Dubai say.
Police told Dubai's 24-hour news channel Emirates24/7 that the "Asian man" took his family to the beach for a picnic and a day of swimming when his daughter started struggling in the water.
"Two rescue men were at the beach, and they rushed to help the girl. However, there was one obstacle ... this Asian man who considered that if these men touched his daughter, then this would dishonour her. It cost him the life of his daughter," Lt. Col Ahmed Burqibah, of Dubai Police's search and rescue department, told the station.
Against the man's wishes, the lifeguards apparently tried to save the woman anyway.
But Burqibah said the father — a large man — physically prevented them from reaching her in time.
"He started pulling and preventing the rescue men and got violent with them. He told them that he prefers his daughter being dead than being touched by a strange man."
The man has since reportedly been arrested and faces charges.
Waseem Ahmed, the director of risk at Dubai Festival City, told Hotelier Middle East the tragedy highlights the need for more female lifeguards on Dubai's beaches.

NEW YORK -- A woman accused of tossing her newborn son to his death from a fourth-floor window told police an evil spirit had taken over the boy, according to court papers Monday.
Rashida Chowdhury, 21, was being held without bail after her arrest late last week in the death of her month-old son, Rizwan.
Chowdhury initially told detectives that she had been asleep in the bed with her son and awoke to discover he was gone, but she later admitted she threw him out the window, police said. She said that he had been possessed by an evil spirit and had been sick recently, and she was "stopping the pain," according to court papers.
The baby had been hospitalized for three days with a viral infection, but had been discharged the day before his death and was recovering, officials said. He appeared to be in good health otherwise.
Investigators were trying to determine whether Chowdhury suffered from postpartum depression but no clinical diagnoses had been made.
Chowdhury's attorney didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment on the accusations.
At around 4 a.m. Aug. 7, Chowdhury quietly got up and brought the baby into the bathroom, police said. A neighbour heard "an unusual noise, like a thump," in the building's courtyard, and when she looked through the window, she saw Rizwan in a blue and white onesie, lying in a pool of blood, authorities said.
The infant's father and other relatives were inside the Queens home but didn't know what happened until they saw the body, police said. The baby died from blunt impact injuries he sustained in the fall, according to the medical examiner's office.
The neighbour, Mazol Ilyayeva, told the Daily News of New York said the father asked: "Did you hear my baby cry when she threw him out of the window?"
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown charged Chowdhury with murder. She was arraigned Saturday.

Tamara Samsonova, Russia's accused serial killing granny, may have killed and eaten nearly twice as many people as first believed, according to findings in her diary.
U.K. tabloid The Sun said police have uncovered details of 21 possible victims in the diary she kept alongside her books on the occult and astronomy.
The 68-year-old pensioner was arrested in St. Petersburg earlier this month after security footage showed what appeared to be Samsonova hauling plastic-wrapped body parts, and a head in a cooking pot, from her home to dump by a nearby pond.
The parts, police say, belonged to Valentina Ulanova, 79, a woman in her care.
She reportedly confessed to drugging the woman and cutting her into pieces with a hacksaw while she was still alive.
The diary also alludes to cannibalism, a police source told media. One told British media -- which has since dubbed her the "Granny Ripper" -- she had a penchant for human lungs.
In her last court appearance, Samsonova admitted she was preparing to be caught after years of quietly murdering and dismembering those around her.
"I was getting ready for this court action for dozens of years."
