KINSELLA: Muted response to The Interview leaves Royal family looking like bigoted, brainless brutes
Absurdity aside, Oprah's interview with Harry and Meghan did boffo box office

When you think about it, the entire scene was ridiculous.

On the one side, the telegenic young millionaire couple — unelected, but still possessing great power. On the other side, the billionaire media star, the one who had scored an exclusive interview with the telegenic young millionaires. And what had they come together to discuss?

How life is unfair to them. Seriously.

The utter absurdity of that notwithstanding, Oprah’s interview with Harry Windsor and Meghan Markle did boffo box office, naturally. Some estimated that half of Britain watched Oprah’s chit-chat with the former Royals. Everywhere else on the planet — even during a deadly global pandemic — The Interview was the event everyone was talking about. It dominated the news for days.

And despite the stakes — despite the fact billions of people would likely tune in — the Royal family still figured out a way to screw up their response. By the time the news cycle slowed down, the Royal family were left looking like a bunch of bigoted, brainless brutes.

It all could have been avoided, too. Full disclosure: this writer runs a crisis communications firm, the Daisy Group, and we’ve learned a few things over the years. Some could’ve been useful to the Royals. Here’s five.

One: When in a hole, stop digging! The monarchy will simply not survive if it continues to be about bad stuff instead of good stuff. For instance, the Royal family does more for charity than perhaps any other family in the world. They need to get out and talk about the good work they do instead of simply responding to public relations nightmares, like the Oprah sit-down. Change the channel, Windsors.

Two: Don’t fire people in the middle of a crisis! It’s one of the Daisy Group rules — if someone knows a lot of secrets, it’s a usually bad idea to summarily dismiss that person in the midst of a public relations controversy. That’s effectively what the Royals did with Harry and Meghan, and now they’re paying the price, big time. In a crisis, always treat your team (and all your staff) with support and affection. The Royals didn’t do that with Meghan and Harry. Meghan and Harry got back at them, with a vengeance.

Three: Stop leading with your chin, and lead with your strength! In the case of the Royals, that’s the Queen. This writer is Irish, with the Irishman’s stereotypical antipathy towards the monarchy. But even I have to admit that Her Majesty is one of the most — if not the most — respected women in the world. My former boss, prime minister Jean Chretien, has often remarked how politically smart and strategic she is. She needs to be the face of the Royal family, not her royally-messed up children. Make her the designated spokesperson. Nobody else.

Four: Leave no charge unanswered. When Meghan made the unsourced and unverified (and probably unfair) allegation of racism with Oprah, the Royals needed to respond to that immediately. They didn’t. They let it hang out there, and it has now become the conventional wisdom. They needed to push back, hard, right away. They needed to unambiguously denounce racism — and talk about the many things they’ve done to promote diversity. They didn’t.

Five: Don’t screw up on a slow news day! The Royals knew this story was coming. They knew it wasn’t going to be good. They did nothing — absolutely nothing — to proactively get positive stories out there to offset it. They just let it happen, and that made it even worse. Always, always have some good news in your pocket that you can quickly get pull out when you are having a PR rainy day!

Will the Royals listen to any of that advice? Of course not. They’re the Royals.

They can’t be fired.

BLIZZARD: Fallout from Harry and Meghan interview could impact Canada
But abolishing the monarchy would require the unanimous agreement of all 10 provinces, the federal House of Commons and the Senate

It’s been seven days since Harry and Meghan’s shock and awe two-hour shellacking of the Royal family in an Oprah Winfrey interview.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex say now they’ve “spoken their truth,” they’ll say no more.

Still, fallout continues on both sides of the Atlantic.

In the U.K., there’s strong support for the Queen, with many viewers slamming H&M for blindsiding her with a full-frontal attack that included accusations of racism within the family, concerns Meghan wasn’t supported in her new role and the suggestion her concerns about her mental health were dismissed by palace officials.

Collateral damage from their accusations could impact Canada.

In the aftermath of the interview, the republican movement, Citizens for a Canadian Republic, tweeted: “Harry says family members are ‘trapped within the royal system.’ As an act of compassion, it’s time to free them from their misery and make them ordinary citizens.”

That’s easier said than done and could lead to yet another constitutional crisis, says one expert.

“Under our constitutional amending formula, abolishing the monarchy would require the unanimous agreement of all 10 provinces and the federal House of Commons and the Senate,” Emmett Macfarlane, professor of political science at Waterloo of University, said by e-mail.

“This high threshold is coupled with the fact that political leaders are deeply averse to ‘opening the Constitution’ because it is perceived as threatening to national unity,” he said, pointing out the Meech Lake and Charlottetown accords in the late 80s and early 90s led to the 1995 Quebec secession referendum.

“We’ve never been able to negotiate a major constitutional reform without other issues being brought to the table. So the politics of constitutional reform make it as challenging as the rules of the amending formula.”

Severing ties with the monarchy would likely bring into question Canada’s continued participation in the Commonwealth, a diverse network of countries around the globe, from Asia to Africa to Australasia.

The Queen is fiercely proud of her role in developing the successful organization aimed at bringing understanding and co-operation to its diverse peoples. It played a vital role in imposing sanctions on the racist apartheid regime in South Africa. Spearheaded by former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and the Queen, at a 1987 Commonwealth meeting in Vancouver, their leadership was instrumental in ending apartheid. Both Mulroney and the Queen were close to imprisoned ANC leader Nelson Mandela, who visited Canada and the U.K. when he was freed.

The Queen called him, “This wonderful man.” Mandela called her, “This gracious lady.”

Mandela supported the monarchy as a defender of racial equality in South Africa.

Some royal watchers see the Oprah interview as a settling of scores. Meghan repeatedly talked about Prince William’s wife, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge. It’s been suggested it may be envy of Kate’s status as a future queen that triggered Meghan’s angst.

While H&M have ruled out the Queen and Prince Philip as the source of the alleged comments about Archie’s skin colour, the entire Royal family has been burned by the couple’s incendiary remarks.

The Queen issued a brief statement saying she will be talking to Harry.

“Recollections may vary,” she said, in a masterpiece of understatement.

Polls last week show H&M’s popularity has plunged in the U.K. The U.S., meanwhile, is firmly on Team Sussex.

Between the sold-out lawn furniture, Oprah’s highly-paid outrage and H&M’s breathless bleating sits the future of Canada’s constitutional monarchy and all its parliamentary and judicial traditions that made this country a beacon of peace and freedom for centuries.

FACT-CHECKING H&M’s EXPLOSIVE CLAIMS

The Palace refused Archie a prince title because he’s mixed race: A rule put in place 100 years ago limits the title to direct heirs and the monarch’s grandchildren. When Charles is King, he can make Archie a prince.

Oprah slammed U.K. press for racism: Newspapers say one-third of the headlines in an on-screen montage were from foreign gossip magazines. Others were taken out of context from stories actually decrying criticism of Meghan. One Daily Telegraph columnist recognized a headline on an innocuous column written 11 months after “Megxit.” The Daily Mail has complained to the production company, saying it was, “deliberate distortion and doctoring.”

It was unprecedented for Archie to be denied 24/7 security: Other royals, including Princess Anne, only get security when they’re on official events. Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, don’t have security.

The Archbishop of Canterbury wed the couple in a “secret” marriage three days before their official wedding: The Church of England has strict rules that weddings can only take place in a church and two witnesses are required.

Meghan had to give up her passport and car keys: Meghan attended a lavish baby shower in New York and an environmental conference on an Italian island in 2019. Royals are routinely seen driving in London.

Conservative pundit Megyn Kelly is continuing her full-on assault on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry following the couple’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, saying she isn’t buying the idea that the pair are “victims.”

“Not even a little,” she said in an interview with Mark Dolan on the U.K.’s TalkRADIO. “That’s what was such a turn off about their interview. At no point did they offer any clue that they had a perspective on what’s going on in the world … They (pretended like they were) a couple of paupers with absolutely no advantages in life … Could you stop for a minute? You’re Prince Harry and Meghan Markle … could you show some gratitude to the British people for making you both household names? The street labourer in London who’s digging ditches is paying for their life.”

During their sit-down, Meghan said the palace held “conversations” about “how dark (her son Archie’s) skin might be” and claimed life as a royal affected her mental health to the point where she considered taking her own life. Meghan, who married Prince Harry in 2018, said the royal family ignored her pleas for mental health support.

“I was ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry. But I knew that if I didn’t say it, then I would do it,” Meghan said. “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore.”

Speaking to the accusations of racism, Kelly said, “They wouldn’t have allowed them to make that allegation in a court of law because they didn’t provide the basis for it. They didn’t name the name; they didn’t say when, where … they offered a sweeping allegation without attaching it to a name (and) we don’t know what happened.”

The former NBC News and Fox News anchor, who in an earlier appearance on the Good Morning Britain said that support for the royal couple was falling along party lines, with “conservative leaning people are against them and the more liberal people for them,” continued to push that narrative.

“The conservatives (in America) say, ‘Oh, we don’t care about the Royal Family,’ but everyone’s talking about it. I think that’s because they’re interested in this woke victimization culture at the highest levels,” she said. “You can become a princess. You can live in a palace. You can access to the crown jewels and still somehow find yourself a victim.”

Kelly said the couple needs to “get a grip.”

Democrats, she continued, like the couple, but “they’re mad at them because they’re way more woke.”

And sadly, if you’re someone hoping that Meghan and Harry will just vanish from the spotlight, Kelly, who launched her own production company last year, said that she doesn’t see the public losing interest in the couple anytime soon.

“The American people are obsessed with celebrity, sadly, and the liberals are going to embrace them because they love anyone who’s woke and wants to lecture the rest of us on how we need to be.”

However, she continues, “they’ll be rejected by the right half of the country as uninteresting and unlikable.”

Elsewhere, Kelly posted and then quickly deleted a meme she shared on twitter showing Queen Elizabeth getting ready to shoot Meghan Markle.

The meme, which was screengrabbed by TMZ, shows the Queen holding a handgun and is captioned, “When you spend £32 million on your grandson’s wedding and his wife starts bitching about you to Oprah.”

A source told TMZ that Kelly “didn’t realize the Queen was holding a gun, and only thought it was a reflection on the windowpane.”

Sharon Osbourne has compared herself to “a lamb held out for slaughter” after she was “totally blindsided” on her U.S. show The Talk by stern questions about her Twitter defence of controversial U.K. newsman Piers Morgan.

Morgan quit his TV gig as co-host of Good Morning Britain on Tuesday following public uproar over his dismissal of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s claims of suicidal thoughts in her revealing tell-all with Oprah Winfrey, but Osbourne voiced her support for her old friend in a statement on Twitter.

“I am with you. I stand by you,” she wrote. “People forget that you’re paid for your opinion and that you’re just speaking your truth.”

Osbourne was quizzed about her comments on daytime show The Talk the following day, insisting she didn’t “agree with what he said,” but was instead standing up for Morgan’s “freedom of speech.”

However, co-host Sheryl Underwood, who is Black, took Sharon to task for supporting Morgan, who had also declared he didn’t believe anything the Duchess had said, including accusing members of the Royal Family of racism.

Osbourne subsequently apologized to anyone who felt offended by her remarks, making it clear she doesn’t “condone racism, misogyny or bullying”, adding via Twitter, “I will always support freedom of speech, but now I see how I unintentionally didn’t make that clear distinction.”

Now Osbourne is holding CBS network bosses responsible for putting her The Talk co-hosts up to the task of grilling her on air over the Morgan controversy.

“I blame the network for it,” she told Variety. “I was blindsided, totally blindsided by the whole situation. In my 11 years (on The Talk), this was the first time I was not involved with the planning of the segment.”

Osbourne admitted a producer had asked her shortly before Wednesday’s showtime if she could be questioned about Morgan during the taping, but she had no idea they had prepared a full script for Underwood to stick to.

“I get on there, I say my piece and Sheryl turns around straight-faced, looks at me and is reading from a card with questions,” she explained.

“I was just so hurt, caught off guard and stunned by what I was being asked and not prepared. I was honestly in shock. I felt like I was in front of a firing squad. I felt like a lamb held out for slaughter… They had me there for 20 minutes.”

Osbourne ended up having to beg producers to “please change subjects” during a commercial break, and she is convinced the TV clash was all concocted by CBS chiefs.

“I’m a big girl. I’m a professional,” she said. “However CBS blindsided me. I don’t know why they did it to me. The showrunners told me it came from executives to do this to me.”

A representative for CBS has declined to respond to Osbourne’s Variety comments, but on Friday, officials announced plans to conduct an “internal review” of the incident.

The Talk is taking a brief hiatus while CBS conduct a review over Sharon Osbourne and Sheryl Underwood’s explosive confrontation last week.

The two women rowed on air last Wednesday when Sharon asked her co-host to “educate” her on why remarks made by her friend Piers Morgan – who she had defended in the wake of his departure from U.K. TV show Good Morning Britain – about Meghan, Duchess of Sussex were racist.

And now CBS officials have decided to pull the plug on the live shows on Monday and Tuesday, Deadline reports, though it is currently slated to return on Wednesday.

The row started on The Talk when Sharon was talking about defending Piers – who said he didn’t believe Duchess Meghan when she said she’d had suicidal thoughts – prompting Sheryl to note: “While you are standing by you your friend, it appears that you are giving validation or safe haven to something that he has uttered that is racist.”

Sharon replied: “Educate me, tell me when you have heard him say racist things? I very much feel like I’m about to be put in the electric chair because I have a friend, who many people think is a racist, so that makes me a racist? How can I be racist about anybody or anything in my life.”

The show then cut to a commercial break, but when it returned, she continued to press Sheryl for an explanation as to what was racist about Piers’ comments and added: “And don’t try and cry, because if anyone should be crying, it should be me.”

The following day, the former The X Factor star apologized for her remarks.

She said: “I am truly sorry. I panicked, felt blindsided, got defensive & allowed my fear and horror of being accused of being racist take over.”

However, the row continued on Friday when former The Talk panellist Holly Robinson Peete alleged Sharon had made racist comments about her.

She tweeted: “I’m old enough to remember when Sharon complained that I was too “ghetto” for #theTalk…then I was gone.”

Sharon denied the allegation, writing on Instagram: “In response to Holly’s accusation of me getting her fired from The Talk and saying she was ‘too ghetto’ to be on The Talk.

“I never once uttered those words and I am sharing an email sent to me from Holly one month after she was let go by CBS. As I have stated before, I have never had the ability/authority to get anyone fired from the show and Ms. Peete’s email speaks for itself.”

CBS confirmed on Friday that they are undertaking a review of what has happened.

The network said in a statement: “We are committed to a diverse, inclusive and respectful workplace. All matters related to the Wednesday episode of The Talk are currently under internal review.”

Without counselling, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will inevitably divorce.

This is the latest prediction from Markle’s half-sister, Samantha Markle.

Sharon Osbourne 'blindsided' by talk show questions about Piers Morgan
Trackerdslogo
As reported by TMZ Samantha Markle believes the couple has to work on honesty and on apologizing to everyone they have hurt with their words, “in the course of this bull in a china shop two-year spiel.”

Markle speculated that Harry is likely already thinking about separation from Meghan Markle because of his wife’s constant dissembling.

The estranged sibling also said the couple needs therapy and perhaps should undertake some sort of apology tour to try to fix all the damage they have done to the British Royal Family.

Samantha Markle is of the opinion that Meghan Markle suffers from narcissistic personality disorder, a diagnosis that became well known during Donald Trump’s administration.

Despite Megan Markle’s statement to Oprah that she has had no relationship with her half sister for many years, Samantha Markle provided photos that show the siblings together as recently as 2008.

On his side, Thomas Markle, Meghan’s estranged father, appeared on Good Morning Britain to suggest that his daughter’s mental health problems were her own fault for ghosting her family.

He also feels his daughter Meghan’s mental distress suggests Harry didn’t support his wife properly.

Markle pater said his cooperation with a tabloid prior to Meghan’s wedding was something he had apologized for repeatedly.

As TMZ reports, Thomas Markle spoke with Prince Harry after Harry had learned Thomas was dealing with the British tabloids; at that time, Markle alleges, Harry said to him, “If you had listened to me this wouldn’t have happened to you.”

Thomas Markle was so angry that he hung up on the royal over what he terms a “snotty” comment.

Further in his own defence, the Markle patriarch said that while he has made mistakes, he certainly has never played naked pool or dressed up like Hitler, obvious references to Harry’s social faux pas of the past.

“I know you are, but what am I,” Prince Harry did not respond. To his credit.

Samantha Markle, meanwhile, was on Australian radio disputing Meghan Markle’s version of events, calling out her sister for endless lying and claiming that Meghan, not the royal family, is responsible for the estrangement with her father.

She used the word delusional to describe Meghan and said her sister had been “Playing victim.”

Perhaps clutching her well-thumbed copy of the DSM-5, Markle said she felt sorry for Harry:

“He fell victim to her … sociopathy. She pulled him away from all of his friends and his family the life he’s known,” and compared the royal to kidnap victims suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. Michelle Obama says Meghan's interview is heartbreaking

LONDON — Michelle Obama said Meghan’s recollections about a remark made by one member of the British royal family about the possible darkness of her son’s skin were heartbreaking and that she hoped Meghan’s experiences would be a lesson for the world.

Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, accused an unidentified royal family member of raising racist concerns about their son and courtiers of ignoring her pleas for help when she was suicidal.

Meghan and Harry’s tell-all TV interview to Oprah Winfrey has dragged the royals into their biggest crisis since the death of Harry’s mother Diana in 1997.

Asked about Meghan’s disclosure of the remark about the skin of Meghan and Harry’s son, former U.S. first lady Obama told NBC News: “I feel like that was heartbreaking to hear, that she felt like she was in her own family – her own family thought differently of her.”

“As I said before, race isn’t a new construct in this world for people of colour, and so it wasn’t a complete surprise to hear her feelings and to have them articulated,” she said.

“I think the thing that I hope for, and the thing I think about, is that this, first and foremost, is a family. I pray for forgiveness and healing for them so that they can use this as a teachable moment for us all.”

Queen Elizabeth said last Tuesday that the royals were saddened by the challenging experiences of her grandson Harry and his wife, and promised to privately address revelations about a racist remark about their son.

Prince William, Harry’s elder brother, denied that Britain’s royals were racist.
