Drains back up on Regina streets and downed trees cause damage near White City

High winds, torrential rain and a load of lightning and loud thunder rolled
into the Regina area around 10:30 p.m. on Friday
In Regina, tree branches came crashing down, there were power
outages and intersections were flooded. It also sent people
scurrying from the Regina Folk Festival downtown in Victoria Park.
In the city there were wind gusts near 100 kilometers and hour and
over 30 millimeters of rain in the storm, with another seven millimeters
since, dumping about an inch and a half of rain in total.
It was an intense line of storms which earlier Friday had tornado
warnings out for the west and southwest of the province.
"Had reports of some funnel cloud activity but as far as we know
no tornadoes touched down yesterday," said, meteorologist David
Baggaley.
Environment Canada believe it was a straight line wind that ripped
through the province. Baggaley says there were reports of golf ball
sized hail in some areas in the western part of the province.
Areas outside of Regina were hit hard by the storm, especially just
to the east at White City, Emerald Park and Balgonie where the
damage is taking its toll emotionally on those who live there.
"We love the old trees and the greenery. We don't want to live in
new areas where there isn't even a stick of a tree," said Linda Simard.
Yves LaChance's front lawn now looks like a jungle.
"It's just unbelievable to see huge trees like that just break like twigs,"
he said.
Over in Emerald Park you can barely even see Ladd Fogarty's home.
That's because so many trees have fallen they've almost created a
cocoon around his house. The storm did more than just snap trees
though.
"The back of the house used to be there, it's not there anymore,"
he said while surveying the damage.
Another resident, Randy Burkart, recalled what it was like during
the height of the storm Friday night.
"I just heard this wild noise like a bunch of helicopters landing on
the roof, but the roof was gone," he said.

My Kids live in a little town about 20 minutes S.E. of Regina,
& have been without power since Friday night about 8pm...
with large trees down all over town across roads and on
(and in) peoples homes. The kids excaped the worst of it, &
have a generator running (a few hours on, a few off) to keep
the fridge and freezer cold.
