Drains back up on Regina streets and downed trees cause damage near White City

Reported by CJME staff

First Posted: Aug 9, 2014 12:51am | Last Updated: Aug 9, 2014 9:09pm

High winds, torrential rain and a load of lightning and loud thunder rolled
into the Regina area around 10:30 p.m. on Friday

In Regina, tree branches came crashing down, there were power
outages and intersections were flooded. It also sent people
scurrying from the Regina Folk Festival downtown in Victoria Park.

In the city there were wind gusts near 100 kilometers and hour and
over 30 millimeters of rain in the storm, with another seven millimeters
since, dumping about an inch and a half of rain in total.

It was an intense line of storms which earlier Friday had tornado
warnings out for the west and southwest of the province.

"Had reports of some funnel cloud activity but as far as we know
no tornadoes touched down yesterday," said, meteorologist David
Baggaley.
Environment Canada believe it was a straight line wind that ripped
through the province. Baggaley says there were reports of golf ball
sized hail in some areas in the western part of the province.

Areas outside of Regina were hit hard by the storm, especially just
to the east at White City, Emerald Park and Balgonie where the
damage is taking its toll emotionally on those who live there.

"We love the old trees and the greenery. We don't want to live in
new areas where there isn't even a stick of a tree," said Linda Simard.

Yves LaChance's front lawn now looks like a jungle.

"It's just unbelievable to see huge trees like that just break like twigs,"
he said.

Over in Emerald Park you can barely even see Ladd Fogarty's home.
That's because so many trees have fallen they've almost created a
cocoon around his house. The storm did more than just snap trees
though.

"The back of the house used to be there, it's not there anymore,"
he said while surveying the damage.

Another resident, Randy Burkart, recalled what it was like during
the height of the storm Friday night.

"I just heard this wild noise like a bunch of helicopters landing on
the roof, but the roof was gone," he said.

The rest of that story is at the LINK at the top of this post.

My Kids live in a little town about 20 minutes S.E. of Regina,
& have been without power since Friday night about 8pm...
with large trees down all over town across roads and on
(and in) peoples homes. The kids excaped the worst of it, &
have a generator running (a few hours on, a few off) to keep
the fridge and freezer cold.

That's terrible! I hope everything returns to a tolerable level of normal for them soon. Good thing it's not winter!

Friends n Vibank is now living in their RV. Their house was hit by a tree lost part of the roof. They just finished building and moved in just a week or two ago.

Everything was safe and sound here at Ft. Robinson

On the up side, at least it wasn't one of those sharknado things. Too far inland I think. ;-)

Slough sharknados. It's a bizarre world, extreme storms (aren't they all extreme?) and tyranny could lead to a slough sharknado with people having their heads stuck on a pike.

Better get a new map. All that s$it is happening back east somewhere. Out West it is hot and sunny.

Yeah, we're looking at thirty two degrees right now in Nanaimo......I like it better a few degrees cooler....say around 25......I'm not really bitching....we could end up with rain dripping off our noses sometime soon....

In the west we have the temperature, back East they have the humidity and sometimes the temperature too so I'd say all in all we are better off. Of course if you find Nanaimo a little too cool you could always move to Lytton or Ashcroft! -:)

It leads to a series of vids from around the world. The one with an ice wall being blown off the Great Lakes was 'odd' in the once in a 100 year kind of way. If this is a new trend the easy part of NA will be very cold and very 'wet'. That may explain all the sharp ridges in the forests of Kentucky, lots of rain long ago made them as sharp as the ones you can find in the islands of the South Pacific. That one is not on vid yet, lol.

When the mesosphere bites the planet again this winter, it's going to bite more asses south of us. Speaking of south of us. If Toronto were moved westward to 104 long. it would still be a 10 hr drive south of me.

10 hrs eh? You might want to get that vehicle fixed before winter sets in.
4 short lengths of 'spinning-chain' (1/2 links and very strong steel) and some climbing/sailboat rope can allow you to build a set of (crude) tire chains and the 1/tire means the bumps won't go away intil about 20kph. The good news is with them you can get to that speed. Cut the rope when on safe roads again, a better and more expensive set could be sold in calgary and such places to anybody who has mag wheels. Same concept but stamped stainless steel is the grip and the rope is now a nylon strap with a latch system and the stamped form is specific to each tire size. You can run with 1 ot 4 per tire and the low profile will be bumpless and traction just as good. Ones makes a drive to the store an back possible, the other way could be how you die.
