The Arctic front is the semipermanent, semi-continuous weather front between the cold arctic air mass and the warmer air of the polar cell. It can also be defined as the southern boundary of the Arctic air mass.[1] Mesoscale cyclones known as polar lows can form along the arctic front in the wake of extratropical cyclones. Arctic air masses in their wake are shallow with a deep layer of stable air above the shallow cold cool.[2]

I've been through damn near 200 arctic front cold snaps and only 2 have been labeled polar vortices and both posted on here by flossy

Fear not the polar vortex, it is just misunderstood
No one really knew what the polar vortex was until four years ago, when the bitterly cold start to 2014 drove up energy consumption and associated commodity prices in the United States. The media instantly fell in love with its sinister sound, and the term “polar vortex” soon gained notoriety - and misunderstanding.
Buzz-worthy though it sounds, the polar vortex is actually much less exciting. It has always existed and is not always the source of extreme weather. In some ways, it is not even a vortex at all.
But the term will likely be misused and overused in the next couple of months - especially if the cold U.S. forecast pans out, so it is important to understand the context.
It's unfortunate some are so entrenched in there new enviro-religious ideology that they are so easily manipulated by scary sounding words. Even more unfortunate is their concerted effort to try and sway rational judgement of others through fear and misrepresentation. Sad really.
