MikeDB:
Good post.
It will take a real incursion on our sovereignity to get Canadians upset, but then it will be too late. So far the trade sanctions disquised as precautionary measures, (which you will notice always seems to be implemented when they are angry at us.) are taken at face value by us, trusting as we are.
But one day we will bei pushed to the limit, then we will flex some muscle of our own.
1/ We will devert some of the major water sheds to produce vegetables (yes, we can tongue-in-cheek the best of them too) due to the Americans invoking "precautionary measures" on vegetables. The Americans are familiar with dry spells, but nothing compared to what that would cause. Los Vegas goodbye.
2/ We'll turn off some switches cutting off from the Manic grid power to NY, Vermont and Maritime states.
3/We'll start producing our own armament. The Arrow was way ahead of it's day, and the American politicians were jealous and quite surprised at it's perfomance, and that was too much for American pride, and Canada relented to Boeing and MD. (It took Europe all these years for it to develop today an advanced Eurofighter which today has the characteristics the Arrow had back then.)
4/ We made many promises requested by the US being our friend. One is to not sell to hostile countries our advanced technology in nuclear energy, this we are way ahead of in our field. Now that this friend's friendship is in question maybe North Korea and Iran would be friendlier. Why not. We all have lived through the boisterous face saving threats to the Russions the Americans made during the cold war, making the situation precarious to us. Besides, Iran would gleafully keep us supplied with oil for 50 years for that nuclear privledge, at a cut rate cost to boot.
Not to mention the mild irritation the Americans would experience knowing the technical people from Iran as well as the Chinese are just across the border.
5/ The 200 mile limit becomes a real 200 mile limit and kiss goodbye to the Alaska highway and pipeline, or, can you imagine the duty on oil from the pipeline and toll from the highway.?
We've proven in WW2 we can mass produce frigates at a phenominal rate when called to do so, so pissing us off is not a good idea.
They are dependant on us for a lot of produce and raw material, sometimes an arrogant nation needs a healthy wake up call on occasion just for a point perspective, and methinks one day we will be obliged to provide it.
