2010 saw record Greenland melt

YouTube - greenland_melting.m4v

New York Times:
Greenland’s massive ice sheet experienced record surface melting and runoff last year, according to research released today.

Unusually warm conditions in much of the country helped extend the annual melting season by up to 50 days longer in 2010 than the average observed between 1979 and 2009, researchers found.
Last year also set records for the amount of water runoff from the ice surface, loss of surface ice and the number of days when ice was bare rather than blanketed by snow. Summer snowfall was below average.

More below:

MSNBC reports:
The ice sheet covering Greenland melted at the fastest rate since records began in 1979, a new study shows. That’s important because the ice sheet is becoming a major contributor to projected sea level rises in coming decades.
Physorg.com also has the story:
“This past melt season was exceptional, with melting in some areas stretching up to 50 days longer than average,” said Dr. Marco Tedesco, director of the Cryospheric Processes Laboratory at The City College of New York (CCNY – CUNY), who is leading a project studying variables that affect ice sheet melting.
“Melting in 2010 started exceptionally early at the end of April and ended quite late in mid- September.”
Washington Post notes:
“This past melt season was exceptional, with melting in some areas stretching up to 50 days longer than average,” said Marco Tedesco, the paper’s lead author and the director of the Cryosphere Processes Laboratory at the City College of New York. “Melting in 2010 started exceptionally early at the end of April and ended quite late in mid- September.”
While the eight researchers from the U.S., Belgium and Holland do not provide a specific estimate for how much melting took place in 2010, which has tied 2005 as the warmest year on record, they write an analysis of several different data sources “paints a portrait of strongly negative surface mass balance during 2010.”
The scientists examined surface temperature anomalies over the Greenland ice sheet surface, as well as estimates of surface melting from satellite data, ground observations and models.
They noted that summer temperatures up to 5.4 Fahrenheit above average, along with reduced snowfall, helped contribute to the high level of melt. As bare ice was exposed earlier and for longer than in previous years it absorbed more heat from the sun, creating what is known as an “albedo” effect in which melting is accelerated.
In an e-mail, Tedesco noted that he and his colleagues estimate based on computer modeling that runoff in 2010 is 530 gigatons a year, compared to a 1958-2009 average of 274 gigatons a year and a 1979-2009 average of 285 gigatons a year.
Different aspects of the study were funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund.
WWF climate specialist Dr. Martin Sommerkorn said in a statment that the findings had serious implcations for rising sea levels worldwide.
“Sea level rise is expected to top three feet by 2100, largely due to melting from ice sheets,” Sommerkorn said. “And it will not stop there – the longer we take to limit greenhouse gas production, the more melting and water level rise will continue.”

The graph above from Marika Holland at NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) compares the most well known projections of arctic sea ice melt from the IPCC, with what the sea ice is actually doing. (red)
It’s now clearer than ever that, at least for his very important metric, climate science has not been able to keep up with the accelerating pace of change in the real, natural world.

70 Trillion cubic feet of New Arctic Ice
disclaimer: no attempts were made to calculate the overall sea ice change (globally, or in the entire northern hemisphere) – the map loop shows slight reduction at southwest Greenland (Labrador Sea), some reduction in Hudson Bay, while some increase at northeast Greenland (Greenland Sea) – possibly an overall neutral effect there. The vast majority of apparent change is in the Arctic Ocean.
Meanwhile, on December 31, 2010, actual measurements of sea ice volume anomalies:

ICED IN and Ignored by the MSM

Posted on January 26, 2011 by Louis Hissink
Richard North has been writing a diary about the events “on” the Okhotsk Sea where two Russian fishing vessels are trapped in the ice with 400 lives on board. Yet not a whisper about it in the MSM! Seems they are more interested in an isolated whale off Sakhalin Island.

Events in the Okhotsk Sea crisis are moving apace, with TASS reporting that the Bereg Nadezhdy fish carrier “has been led by two icebreakers from the ice area to clear water.” Now the Admiral Makarov and Krasin icebreakers are returning to the Sodruzhestvo factory ship “in order to guide the vessel to ice-free waters.”

On Mankind in Amnesia

Posted on January 20, 2011 by Louis Hissink
I’ve read the book and the present obsession with a looming ecological catastrophe was considered many years ago last century in a posthumously published collection of essays by various authors. Velikovsky, writing professionally as a pyschoanalyst, concluded:
“I say this with a sense of urgency, for who knows when the irrational in man may take control?”
The irrational in man has taken control, and its the catastrophic anthropogenic global warming movement, where James Hansen could be considered one its more ardent proselytisers since his early studies led him down the path darkened by the fictitious concept of a runaway greenhouse gas effect first proposed by his mentor, Carl Sagan, that has led to the present development of anthropogenic global warming fears. Hansen simply continued building the edifice originally founded by Charles Lyell a century before him.

There you have it, two of the players in the conspiracy to subvert science to the will of the money grubbing lying shi tmasters. The TV celebrity show host and his bag man. Sagans greenhouse nonsense wouldn't work for Venus and it don't work for earth. So what we got now is a sexed up re run of a completely falsified thirty year old television theory. The word is irrational. DB

PS: Sagan is also the co originator of the retarded and also falsified theory of the dirty snowball comets, which have been conclusively proven (five times) to be big hard rocks.

Ahh, someone wrote it on the internet so it must be true....or maybe not:

Apparently dumb beaver wasn't taught that not everything on TV is necessarily true (the modern corollary being everything on the internet, is not guaranteed of truth). Dumb beaver.

No, I actually check for myself. You appear content to be a parrot. You should either get a BS detector, or fix the one you have.

Better still I should get a BS license, like you did. (grin)

No, you should get a clue. You can't even check for yourself to see if the meme "The mainstream media ignores_______." is true. Lame dumb beaver. I guess BS is fact checking to you. Weird.

How many of those are mainstream?

BBC, ABC, The Guardian, The Australian, MSN, Al Jazeera, are undoubtedly mainstream media sources. RIA Novosti is the largest multi-media news agency in Russia, and the Voice of Russia has been broadcasting on the radio since 1929.

If you doubt that these are not mainstream media, then by what criteria do you actually use? These are some of the largest media groups in the world.

So what's your ad hoc revisionist definition of mainstream media?

Warming North Atlantic water tied to heating Arctic, according to new study

January 27, 2011

Photo of the German research vessel Maria S. Merian moving through sea ice in Fram Strait northwest of Svalbard. The research team discovered the water there was the warmest in at least 2,000 years, which has implications for a warming and melting Arctic Credit: Nicolas van Nieuwenhove (IFM-GEOMAR, Kiel)

The temperatures of North Atlantic Ocean water flowing north into the Arctic Ocean adjacent to Greenland -- the warmest water in at least 2,000 years -- are likely related to the amplification of global warming in the Arctic, says a new international study involving the University of Colorado Boulder.

Led by Robert Spielhagen of the Academy of Sciences, Humanities and Literature in Mainz, Germany, the study showed that water from the Fram Strait that runs between Greenland and Svalbard -- an archipelago constituting the northernmost part of Norway -- has warmed roughly 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit in the past century. The Fram Strait water temperatures today are about 2.5 degrees F warmer than during the Medieval Warm Period, which heated the North Atlantic from roughly 900 to 1300 and affected the climate in Northern Europe and northern North America.

The team believes that the rapid warming of the Arctic and recent decrease in Arctic sea ice extent are tied to the enhanced heat transfer from the North Atlantic Ocean, said Spielhagen. According to CU-Boulder's National Snow and Ice Data Center, the total loss of Arctic sea ice extent from 1979 to 2009 was an area larger than the state of Alaska, and some scientists there believe the Arctic will become ice-free during the summers within the next several decades.

"Such a warming of the Atlantic water in the Fram Strait is significantly different from all climate variations in the last 2,000 years," said Spielhagen, also of the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in Keil, Germany.

According to study co-author Thomas Marchitto, a fellow at CU-Boulder's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, the new observations are crucial for putting the current warming trend of the North Atlantic in the proper context.

The warm North West Arctic is more than made up for by the cold North East Arctic following the magnetic pole drift. I got a couple of friends who are working in the area on ships, they both report warmer than usual conditions, speed boating in Labrador harbours just after christmas, that is the missing heat the drift usually sends to western Europe and the UK. The ice is following the magnetic pole.

Right viewers in N America will not recognize any of those as mainstream. For instance where is our beloved (but sick) CBC. A clear case of media manipulation to support the global warming template.
