As someone who is all for more efficient and environmentally friendly production of our natural resources but also as someone who lived through Wiebo Ludwig's campaign against Alberta Energy Company in the Hythe area in the 90s, I will unabashedly agree that there are environmental terrorists out there and they deserve to face the full penalty of law. Just because they haven't killed anyone yet* doesn't mean they won't, it doesn't mean their prospective victims deserve any such treatment and it doesn't mean their cause is remotely just.
In the case of Mr Ludwig, apologists like to forget that he was found guilty of criminal code offences against energy producers (as was his son Benjamin who received a conditional discharge, even though he was caught with full facial shots on surveillance committing acts of vandalism that caused thousands of dollars in damage)and that he was suspected of numerous other acts that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage and potentially life threatening incidents such as releases of high H2S gas (a highly dangerous nerve agent)and firing rifle shots into manned facilities. These acts DID endanger the lives of numerous people, both employees and contractors working for AEC, but also members of the the general public as well: at one point the main highway between Grande Prairie, AB and Dawson Creek, BC had to be closed because well site piping was blown up releasing poisonous gas less than 1/4 mile from the highway (fortunately the wind was blowing away from the highway at the time of the incident).
Apologists for Mr Ludwig also like to ignore the fact that he refused to let the Alberta government or 3rd party agencies monitor air quality on his property to prove if there was any validity to his claims. All that matters to apologists is that he told a good story and made a sympathetic figure to those who didn't have to deal with him, while Alberta Energy Company donated money and encouraged area employees to cooperate with and support local Crimewatch programs, which meant the RCMP was "for hire" when it came to investigating the wave of acts of vandalism in the area.
The real irony in this case is that while Ludwig was conducting his campaign, AEC wasn't the group of bad guys he made them out to be, but after things were settled and their management changed, they were definitely in a position to become so, based on their change in management/operating philosophy...
* in the case of "Reverend" Ludwig, there was a teenage girl killed at his compound, when shots were fired from the Ludwig compound at the vehicle she was a passenger in. The driver of said vehicle was NOT acting in lawful manner, by trespassing and allegedly "spinning doughnuts" on the Ludwig property, but since when is trespassing a capital crime?
