Ontario to detail cap-and-trade system for carbon emissions in coming days

Whether you're putting fuel in your car, heating your home or manufacturing a product in Ontario, you'll soon know more about the price the province wants you to pay for the carbon you pump into the atmosphere.

In the coming days, Premier Kathleen Wynne's government is expected to unveil more of its plans for a cap-and-trade system on greenhouse gas emissions, which environmental groups predict will generate $2 billion annually for the province.

There are many unanswered questions about the cap-and-trade plan: exactly how much it will cost, who will bear the biggest burden, what the government will do with the money and how far it will bring down Ontario's carbon emissions.

Some answers should come soon. Wynne's government is poised to reveal its new "climate change strategy" sometime this fall, and it will almost certainly be made public before Wynne jets off to Paris for the UN conference on climate change in early December, along with other premiers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"What's being brought forward is going to be a big deal," NDP environment critic Peter Tabuns said.

"Cap-and-trade can work really well, but the details matter," said Keith Brooks, head of the clean economy program for Environmental Defence. "So we're going to be paying close attention to the details, really want to make sure that Ontario gets this right."

What is the fine, plant a tree?? Canada's forest would seem to take more out if the air than we create so we should be in the black all the time.

Union contracts are based on inflation. The high dollar was interfering in the COLA in collective bargaining.

Privatized Hydro AND cap and trade for Ontario? My oh my, will the good times ever end?

Once again the Ontario Lib-tards prove they aren't interesting in actually doing anything about GHGs, just appearing like they are while soaking the taxpayer for it as per usual.

But I guess that's what happens when you keep electing douchebags that prefer to rule by ideological decree instead of what's best for Ontarians.

It's always been about generating revenue for the government gravy train.

Those are not real Ideologues....Real ideologues live according to what they preach.....
Those are the "Don't do as I do but as I tell you to do" hypocrites, like Gore, Suzuki...and yes "Flossy" who thinks thinks himself enlightened and doing his share because he posts threads "ad nauseum" on global warming on a web forum....
Hell I'd be willing to bet his carbon footprint is more than mine.....
And there are several others preaching in this forum....hypocrites all!

We need to create a green tax, because anyone not pumping carbon into the atmosphere is clearly not paying their share of the taxes.

There was a CBC panel recently on the manner in which we will ultimately make our transition to the new low carbon economy, and one of them made the point that the focus should be on the consumer rather than the producer.

Not sure if I entirely agree, but I have heard that cap and trade is inferior to something like a carbon tax in that large corporations could take advantage of the former by just taking the economic hit rather than actually reducing emissions.

Corporations don't take the economic hit . They pass them on to the consumer or get government bailouts .
