The Ontario New Democrats are joining their federal colleagues at the front of the pack as they solidify their lead in a new poll.

The province’s NDP is in first place in an exclusive Forum Research polls showing the party could take a plurality of seats, albeit not enough for a majority, if an election were called. The growth in New Democrat support to 35 per cent of respondents comes after Rachel Notley led Alberta’s NDP to a historic victory and as federal leader Thomas Mulcair enjoys a strong lead in federal polls.

The Progressive Conservatives stand at 32 per cent support among those surveyed, almost tied with the NDP given the poll’s margin of error, and the provincial Liberals have fallen to 26 per cent.

Topher Seguin/Edmonton Journal Federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and Alberta Premier Rachel Notley — is their success helping the Ontario NDP pick up support in the polls?
“Whether this a reflection of the NDP victory in Alberta, or Tom Mulcair’s new prominence as the darling of the national electorate, it is clear the NDP have established a winning beach head in Ontario, and it isn’t going away soon,” said Forum Research President Lorne Bozinoff in a statement.

The numbers also display “relative stability” in that support, the release notes. Forum’s May poll showed the NDP at 36 per cent, the PCs at 33 per cent and the Liberals at 24 per cent: so even with the poll’s four per cent margin of error, the Ontario NDP lead is no fluke.

PostmediaKathleen Wynne is poised to sell of part of Hydro One, a privatization bid her three predecessors, two of them Tories, couldn't stomach.
The drop in Liberal support comes just over a year after Premier Kathleen Wynne led the party back to a majority of seats at Queen’s Park, unexpectedly winning the party’s fourth straight election.

Allegations of bribery — an “apparent contravention” of election law as Elections Ontario put it — in the Sudbury by-election and the controversial decision to sell off 60 per cent of Hydro One may also be eating into Liberal support.

Horwath led Question Period for weeks with questions about Sudbury and her party has led the charge, alongside public sector unions, against the Hydro One sale. Forum’s past polls show the growth in NDP support began around the time of the Sudbury byelection, picked up steam with the Hydro One announcement and then solidified as national support grew and the party took Alberta.

A recent Mainstreet Technologies poll showed 60 per cent of Ontarians disapprove of the sale.

The PCs don’t seem to be enjoying a prolonged bump from new leader Patrick Brown, elected in early May, perhaps because he remains unknown to many voters. Only one about one fifth approve of Brown, 19 per cent, but 53 per cent admit to not knowing much about him.

Horwath has the approval of almost four in ten voters, or 38 per cent, and Wynne is just shy of three-in-ten support at 29 percent. However, the premier’s net approval “is a very negative -31,” compared to Brown’s -10 and Horwath’s +6 in Forum’s net favourable score, which subtracts disapproval scores from approval numbers.

The next Ontario election is three years away, so perhaps the best news is for Mulcair, who needs to pick up seats in Ontario if he hopes to form a government. On the flip side, the poll is bad news for Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, who needs to retake many seats in Ontario to move the once-governing party out of third place.

The interactive-voice-response poll surveyed 678 Canadians from June 25 to July 7. It is considered accurate by a margin of four per cent, 19 times out of 20.

Yea after all that talk about debt and a socially progressive regime, it makes complete sense to go further left and even more progressive.

Total buyer's remorse lol

A Lieberal voter would likely stay left. But 3% lead over the PCs isn't quite clear of the statistical uncertainty either. One thing is clear that both parties that are NOT Lieberal seem to be doing quite well right now -- not that it matters as the Lieberals are in for another 3 years.

Truth be told Howarth isn't a bad leader. But I don't see the provincial NDP ever forming another government after Bob Rae.

The NDP are the future of politics in Canada.

They are the party of the Takers who include everyone from teachers and nurses to pensioners and welfare recipients. Demographically the Takers grow in size every year. These groups all have in common that they are entitled to more and all in agreement that the Makers need to pay for it.

The situation in Greece and the rest of the PIIGS is our likely future without the NDP. With the NDP it is just accelerated.

I love it when Cons preach about entitlement while demamding tax cuts.

It's that extra sprinkle of iron filings that goes so well with your Cheerios every morning.

While there are Conservative parties, there is no such thing as an elected or sitting "Conservative" party in Canada. There has not been a "Conservative" government for better than 50 years. There will never be a "Conservative" government again because the Takers far outnumber the Makers now. What we have today are various levels of philosophically liberal governments actively engineering social change and doling out money and patronage to their interests.

SO you don't think people that work are entitled to at least some of the money they make?
The conservative leaning parties are the only ones that represent the interests of working people in Canada.

What it shows, when you take the margin of error into consideration is that the PC's and the NDP are out in front of wynns liberals, and are neck and neck. That is ALL it shows.

Bingo. But some people think it's just because austerity failed.

Why is people wanting to keep more of the money they've earned such an alien idea to you?
Because his ideology dictates it.
