I bet progressive economists probably don't identify at all with much of the NDP platfrom. Instead, the NDP cherry picks what they say.
Read 'On Liberty' by John Stuart Mill. It's mostly a philosophical book but it does touch on economics too. He was what one could call a progressive economist, yet the NDP would shun many of his ideas today. Yet none can pretend that Mill didn't want the state to help the poor. He just understood how much the state could help the poor and understood that the state had to do so within the constraints of the laws of economics.
"Utilitarianism" discusses his economic views quite a bit too.
The minimum wage has been raised two or three dozen times since WW2. Which one of those times was poverty eliminated?
Actually, I would support prohibiting banks from charging a business for simply allowing its client to use his credit card to make a purchase. Sure the banks would then just transfer the cost onto the cardholder, but then at least the card holder would know the true cost of using his credit card.

The $15hr wage is return quicker to the economy than what the Republican tote as a solution to economic growth the trickle down method.. and it's improving the standard of living for millions...
We use to depend on Unions for fair wages, and workers rights... Unions are not as strong anymore so we must rely on our elected officials to help grow the economy...
$15/hr is a fair minimum wage.. and if you are a business that leaves Ontario or any state or Province because of this increase, I hope the people in that State or Province boycotts the shit out of your services or products

Or are you just an Asshole? So you are OK with an arbitrary minimum wage whether the employee's job is to answer the phone 3 times an hour or if he/she spends the day shovelling 5 yards of gravel by hand? Raising the minimum wage has about the same effect on employees as a rising tide has on boats. At one time we had a working wage of $1 an hour and bread cost 10 cents a loaf. Now we have a wage at $11 an hour and bread costs $2 a loaf. Get the picture, there, Einstein?
I oppose a mandatory minimum wage increase not out of spite for the less fortunate but out of reality.
Do I support generous social assistance to those who cannot work? Sure.
Could I support free trades and professional training programmes for the poor and maybe even room and board and maybe even vouchers for other essentials while they upgrade their skills? Sure. By raising the person's skill set, we make him more valuable to a potential employer who will then offer to pay more to attract him due to his higher productivity.
But if we raise the mandatory minimum wage without also raising funding for trades and professional training, then we're essentially legislating the poor out of the labour market.
Now what I could support would be an officially recommended minimum wage below which a person could quit his job without penalty.
To take an example. Imagine that the officially recommended minimum wage is 15.00/hour and social assistance gives roughly the equivalent of 5.00/hour. A person who's paid less than the officially-recommended minimum could still keep his job if it pays better than social assistance but, since he's paid below the official minimum, could still apply for trades or professional education along with room and board. Once approved for the course, he could then hand in his resignation to coincide with the first day of training. That way, at least up to the training day, he's getting paid more than what social assistance could offer him.
I could even support legally mandating an employer to inform any employee paid below the minimum wage of this right even before they sign the contract.
I oppose a mandatory minimum wage not out of a lack of compassion for the poor, but precisely for the benefit of the poor.

Maybe, if the machines don't break down resulting in costly repairs. A lot of times there's no reduction in employees as the employees are now often used for running and repairing machines, whether you hire him directly or indirectly.
