The point is that bears AREN'T cuddly.

How much do we kill animals just for being out in nature? Opening up a spring bear hunt because one bear was a problem, out in the bush, makes no sense.
Point is, there WAS a spring bear hunt - and there has been for time immemorial. It taught bears to fear man. Momma bears were killed - 'cuz who'd shoot a cub (not enough rug or meat) and people worried of orphans. The cub is usually adopted by another sow. Bears are much better than people in taking care of their own. Orphans get the message. Stay away from man.

A rogue bear is a horse of a different colour. Crazy is everywhere.

In BC, logging has punched roads into just about every habitat around and hunters have access to most game from their trucks and ATVs. I would call that intrusion into their territory. I live in the forest. I have had hundreds of bear encounters. None have been threatening, two I actually kicked in the butt; one to keep it from being killed by hunters and one to keep him from taking my fish. My friend punched one in the nose to get it out of his apple tree. I was also nose to nose with one in my plumb tree, but I talked him down. He never came back. I spent 10 years as a professional mushroom picker in an area where dozens of bears came every year to feed on spawning Kokanee salmon. I only had one encounter where a bear was aggressive. He growled at me and I growled louder. He left.

A rogue bear is a horse of a different colour. Crazy is everywhere.
Yup. Crazy people are far more dangerous and numerous.

It makes more sense to me to simply stop wasting resources on relocating nuisance bears and rehabilitating orphans.

The population boom isn't only due to the effect of the ending of the hunt.

I also think long lasting bright pigment should be added to bear mace.... any bear that gets close enough to a human to get sprayed, should be eliminated by fish and wildlife.

There are better, more logical ways to deal with problem bears, than also killing the ones that aren't problems.

I don't believe there really has been a population boom - at least not in the Sudbury region. Berry yields have been lousy over the last three years (less acid in the rain) so they're hungrier. Bears are bolder - and people seem to do stupider things.

Goggd, good point.

I am oppose to spring hunts because :
1. The meat is wasted, as is the hide unless you are into mangy spring fur...
2. Early spring browse is 'low calorie', and bears will range because , well, they are hungry. YOu are better off to keep human spring . early summer intrusions to a minimum until better seasonal browse is established.

I have never seen a bear season that was wasted, until gov't started listening to cityots or females. I have killed plenty of bears and still do, right in my backyard after the chicken wire is torn down and the flock is torn up. Happens every 2-3 years and would be more often if we did not kill the damn things.

I would be on your side if we treated humans the same way.

That's natural selection.... get rid of the nuisance bears that are too dumb to stay away. Cull the herd, so to speak, when food stores drive them into town. That's the way it ought to be done.

What always infuriates me is the 'relocating' of nuisance bears, or rehabilitating orphaned cubs. They'll just be back as nuisance bears, used to relying on humans for food.

No claim at all to that. I tasted some bear meat in the early 60's and decided that unless starving i would not eat it. So, no witnesses:lol:

Spring bear tastes horrid because there is hardly any fat and what fat there is, is hard and gross crap. The meat is full of raunchy **** from hibernating.

Fall bear that has been feeding on blueberries is mighty fine munching, especially when you are broke and hungry.

Guys it was a fall bear that i had a roast from, shot out of an oat field in early October by my brother and well handled. I still eat nearly everything else with gusto, moose, elk, deer, squirrels, muskrats, ..... but not bear.

Some people don't like ice cream either. It is all a matter of taste.
