Donald Trump has accused Barack Obama of "treason", claiming he plotted to sabotage his first presidency by trying to link him to alleged Russian election meddling.
"They tried to steal the election," Trump said at the White House as he claimed Obama had sought to undermine his 2016 victory over Hillary Clinton.
A spokesman for Obama issued a rare retort, calling Trump's attack "a weak attempt at distraction".
Trump was referring to a report from US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard last week that accused Obama and his national security team of a "years-long coup against President Trump" - findings that Democrats have branded false.
Trump's comments on Tuesday came as he faced questions from reporters about late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial.

The president's administration has been under pressure to release more information about the well-connected convicted paedophile.
Obama spokesman Patrick Rodenbush said: "Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response.
"But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction."

The department — under increasing pressure from President Donald Trump’s political base — petitioned the court last week to release those closely held records of the testimony of witnesses who appeared before the grand jury. But in a 12-page opinion Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Robin L. Rosenberg said that she could not legally do so under guidelines governing grand jury secrecy set by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, which includes Florida.

The Justice Department petitioned the court last week to release the closely held records of the testimony of witnesses who appeared before the grand jury.
The federal judges in New York overseeing the motion to release the transcripts there said that the department had not “adequately addressed” the limited factors under which grand jury material can be publicly released in that appellate district. They requested further briefing from government lawyers and input from representatives for Epstein and Maxwell as well as their victims.

The petition centers on the attorney general’s refusal to start a criminal investigation regarding hundreds of thousands of dollars paid by the foundation in 2004–2006 to Barak “for two research papers – one of which was never completed – while [Barak] wasn’t in politics.” According to the petitioner, however, at the time Barak received the payment he was politically active. The payment therefore raised the suspicion of Barak’s having committed fraud and breach of trust and of receiving a prohibited election contribution. Mark Epstein has repeatedly alleged his brother was killed while in prison. A joint memo issued earlier this month from Trump’s Justice Department and the FBI concluded there is no evidence to support allegations Epstein was murdered, rather than dying by suicide, and that he did not keep a “client list.”
