Falklands War 1982 - early diplomatic events
Thanks, that is pretty much consistent with my recollection; I was living in Britain at that time. Interestingly, the website mentions torpedoing of General Belgrano, but says nothing about torpedoing of HMS Sheffield, that was the only success for Argentinean Navy in the war.
In a way, the war was good for democracy. Argentinean military lost so much face in the war (it was a story of one defeat after another, it turned out that while the military was good at oppression within the country, it was hopelessly inept at fighting wars outside the country) that the military rule in Argentina did not survive long, it was replaced by democracy in a short order.
Sir Joseph
I turned on the news and Fox was on - this was one of their stories this morning - no doubt any other alphabet network will have it on and rebroadcast for you into Canada as well.
FOXNews.com - NASA Chief: Next Frontier Better Relations With Muslim World
This is the kind of ballet dancer thinking (I love you - you love me) Obama's indulges in - it is fine for a human rights specialist and I agree with it - but not when you have a Space Station which is "astronomical" in potential and has cost "astronomical financial expenditure"...and he wants to operate like a Boy Scout Camp to befriend Muslims?
It's just too weird to believe Sir Joseph - like I said before - You just have to live under it....
Curio
I don’t see anything wrong with that. Assuming the story to be true (and that is a big ‘if’, anything appearing in FOX is suspect to start with, unless confirmed by CNN or a similar reputable network), I see nothing wrong in cooperating with Muslim countries in the space program, provided it does nothing to interfere with the war on terrorism.
Muslim world must be dealt with on two fronts. One is war against terrorism, to try to root out the terrorists wherever possible. The other is to reach out to Muslim countries, to the moderate Muslims. Both are essential if we are to win the war. Bush tried shoot from the hip, cowboy policies for eight years, that got him nowhere. Let us see if Obama is more successful with his policy of stick and carrot (rather than only stick, as practiced by Bush).
Hi YukonJack
Well Fox isn't liked in Canada I understand - but the story is on the internet so the other stations will probably have milked down versions -
Obama is more frightening than a new missile - he smiles while he gives us away.
It is not a question of liking FOX, curiosity. Fox isn’t believed in Canada. It is well known that it is a Republican mouthpiece, so it is reasonable for FOX to outright invent news sorties or bias the existing stories heavily in favour of Republicans. That is why it is not a reputable, respectable news organization, at least internationally. CNN by contrast is universally respected and admired.
Perhaps the Annointed One should worry more about voters (still a majority) at home than pleasing those who, by definition, could not care less about what he thinks, i.e. the Muslim world.
washingtonpost.com
Those of you who routinely dismiss the most powerful name in news should note that this article is by none other than an Obama sycophant published in an Obama worshipper paper.
That sounds like a reasonable article YJ, as one may expect in Washington Post. It seriously tries to assess the mid term elections in a non partisan manner.
I can just imagine similar article on FOX News, where they would confidently predict that Republicans will win the control of senate and House in 2010 (with perhaps a filibuster proof majority in the Senate), win the presidency in 2012 and increase their margins in the Congress still further (like Rasmussen predicted 3 days before the presidential election that it was a statistical dead heat between Obama and McCain).
That is why Washington Post is a respectable, reliable news organization, while FOX isn’t.
