Update: 34 states and the District of Columbia saw their unemployment rates go down in April. Six states saw their rates go up, and 10 states had unchanged rates.

This is a significant improvement from the previous month which saw 16 states and D.C. with unemployment rates that went down, 22 states with rates that went up, and 12 with no change.

I agree, that Cash For Clunkers program was the greatest stimulus package ever seen invloving the true realities of what the public really got...

Do you know why there was cash for clunkers?

Because China will only take raw goods like steel for payment of debts.

Man Icarus... were you watching the news yesterday! Take the blinders off! The latest jobs reports suck and the market went down the tubes yesterdaybecause of it!

Perhaps you should head to Wall St. and explain how things REALLY are.

1.6 Million were hired as census takers and seasonal agriculture giving malarky job stats but there are still more than 30 Million taking food stamps and 16% unemployment.

Exactly... the little bump in employment recently was due to temp work and the census jobs.

The New York Times is not referred to as the "grey lady" for nothing.

Anything you read in the New York Times is worth as much as anything an Alzheimer-ridden grey old lady can or would say.

That editorializing of yours Jack would be fitting on any editorial column of the failing print media.

The "Gray lady" refers to many words, and few pictures.

To follow your logic, the good numbers represent an improvement in the numbers of people who are actually eating.

They are eating other people, figuratively, for now at least. I meant to say that your numbers are cooked until they are soft and palatable. Take them with sugar and the medicine goes down.

Tonnington, you got that right!

The Print media is surely sinking in its well-deserved grave.

The more they lie, the faster they will sink. The New York Times is their leader.

Man Icarus... were you watching the news yesterday! Take the blinders off! The latest jobs reports suck and the market went down the tubes yesterday because of it!

Perhaps you should head to Wall St. and explain how things REALLY are.

Talking about state unemployment rates, and whether they're going up or down, is wearing blinders? Really? I ask because these rates are more important than the initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI), the "jobs reports" from yesterday that you are apparently talking about.

Some background: The US Labor Department reported yesterday that initial UI claims jumped by 25,000 for the week.

Source: The Associated Press: Jobless claims rise by largest amount in 3 months

Unemployment rates are completely different stats from UI claims, as explained on BLS's FAQ page.

"What do the unemployment insurance (UI) figures measure?

"The UI figures are not produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Statistics on insured unemployment in the United States are collected as a by-product of UI programs. Workers who lose their jobs and are covered by these programs typically file claims ("initial claims") that serve as notice that they are beginning a period of unemployment. Claimants who qualify for benefits are counted in the insured unemployment figures (as "continued claims").

...

"These data are not used to measure total unemployment because they exclude several important groups."

Source: Current Population Survey Frequently Asked Questions

Not that the initial claims for UI statistic isn't important in its own right, but the unemployment rates that I'm talking about measure unemployment more directly, and right now, those rates are going down in most states.

I think I already am explaining how things REALLY are because I'm giving official data, fully sourced.

The only hiring increase has been by the Federal Government, in primarily temporary jobs. The author of this bull manure must be a real advocate for the propaganda machine.
