There is no reason they could not raise their own chickens now.... aside from the ridiculous cost of shipping feed up there...lol

Chick to market 90 days.

Possibly they could build some greenhouses up there, that would help, and they won't have to wait for tomato coming from the south.
Still no good. You need light and heat to operate a greenhouse. To do that means flying in diesel fuel. How ,many litres of fuel does it take to grow a green pepper?

An abondonded mine (if one exists close) would have (if deep enough) heat,
& perhaps humidity. Light could be piped in via fiberoptics or UV bulbs like
the Gov't dope growers do...

I'm just stumbling along here, but I'm thinking the "mine" thing would be
closer to your expertice than mine.

That's funny.

When I posted the UN report a few weeks ago on food security in this country, I got ridiculed.
And rightly so. Because you made the ridiculous leap from food security to starvation.

But you can remember it anyway you want if it makes you feel any smarter.

Now everyone is jumping on the bandwagon.
They are? Everyone? What bandwagon?

There isn't enough natural light even if you could 'pipe" it down a mine. It would need to be a working mine at a depth of at least 1200 metres to be warm enough, a working ventilation system, and accessed by lift to and from surface. All extremely expensive and all needing fuel for power.

Grow ops have been doing it for years.... Full spectrum lighting is the next best thing.
If you can bury a load of sea containers and grow pot in the mountains of BC. I'm sure some enterprising young person could put something together for Canada's north.

Or get busy developing a hardier type of wheat.

The problem with subsidizing northerners is that it risks increasing the number of people moving there for jobs, not realizing the real cost to the taxpayer.

.

More people moving there would be good, it would drive prices down!

Back in the fifties, those people we then called Eskimos, didn't seem to eat chickens and apples, but the rot was
setting in. They drank coffee and a lot of them had rifles. I was only up there as a kid for three days but the strongest impression
I brought back was how happy they all seemed. Sounds like that has all changed.

That's what happens when the EU and the UN start blocking/interfering with a source of income and sustenance.

Still need electricty (genny and fuel).
I've done my share of indoor growing under lights. I've had this for 7 years now:

There is no way in hell it is efficient enough to grow food. Trust me, I tried.

Pharming yes...farming not so much. I worked in a mine with a grow op in it. Trout Lake MB. They were growing weed for Health Canada and veg but the veg was dropped due to lack of profits even with being tied into the MB Hydro grid with smokin' cheap rates.
