The ruling by U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg blocks the Trump administration from keeping asylum-seekers in custody until their immigration proceedings are dealt with.
"This ruling means the Trump administration cannot use indefinite detention as a weapon to punish and deter asylum seekers," Michael Tan, a senior staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union's Immigrants' Rights Project.

Actress Amber Heard has lamented the highly “politicized” nature of the ongoing U.S. immigration controversy after coming under fire for sharing a racially insensitive warning about an immigration checkpoint.
The Rum Diary star has been outspoken about her opposition to President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigrants, particularly those sneaking across the Mexican border into the U.S., and in the early hours of Tuesday, she took to Twitter to notify followers of an impromptu U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) inspection site set up near her Los Angeles home.
“Just heard there’s an ICE checkpoint in (Hollywood), a few blocks from where I live,” she wrote. “Everyone better give their housekeepers, nannies and landscapers a ride home tonight.”
Her post sparked a backlash online as social media users took issue with her suggestion that people in those typically low-paid professions were undocumented Latinos, and she quickly followed it up by clarifying the point she had been trying to make.
“Checkpoints on your home streets….,” she began. “Is this the ‘great’ America we’re aiming for? Raids, fences and police-state like checkpoints don’t feel like the ‘land of the free’ our immigrant ancestors built.”
Amber subsequently deleted the original message, but Twitter trolls continued to attack her for her poor choice of words.
“Sweetie, you aren’t very bright. Changing this tweet now doesn’t make any difference. We know what you think of immigrants, they are the help. Your first instinct was your truth. Typical rich b—-,” snarled one critic, while another wrote, “You’re a disgrace. A racist and a hypocrite. You do not care about these people, only your cheap labor. Labor that you can abuse and manipulate to your desire. You’re disgusting!”
The actress has now expressed her frustration at the way her words have been perceived and pounced on by conservatives.
“With this human rights crisis being so politicized, it is hard to make a simple statement w/out (without) it being used to distract from the real issues,” she tweeted. “Its (sic) hard for everyone to not be negatively affected by this subject (in) some way.”
Amber’s Twitter controversy emerges days after she joined fellow celebrity activists, including Lena Dunham, Bella Thorne, Joshua Jackson, Sia, and Mira Sorvino, outside a Tornillo, Texas detention facility on June 24 to protest the Trump administration’s former policy of separating children from their parents after entering the U.S. illegally. The Tornillo centre had been used as one of the locations to hold the kids in custody.
