If they do it they should claim James Bay and Hudson Bay as economic recovery zones that belongs to the new Province. Fish farming and sea ice being the main exports. Take a 50km swath around the whole area to establish 'a border'. 30M refugees welcome, those in the best condition get the more remote locations.

Ultra lites would seem to be a market for the area as you can land anyplace when there is snow on the ground. Self powered dog-sleigh when going out for a few days. Because it is an area that dates back to primordial times the mineral deposits should be quite rich depending if the whole bay is an impact zone or a natural sink-hole that was one of the starting places of subduction rather than a rift like you find at the end of the crack that goes past Iceland..

What a joke, as soon as a few disgruntled people who are surprised to find
out they can't have their own way on all matters set out to find their own path
without understanding the road they are going to head down Ok I am amused
by such simple expectations
It saves Ontario the expense of developing the place and they are the nearest shipping partner so the will skim a bit off the top of whatever is exported to other places. The IMF gives money (@ interest so this is 100 year loan) away and this would need whole towns built that are all locally independent for vital services.
Canadian companies would be first in line and ocean water is the most abundant resource there is so stationary hydrogen fuel cells would be a natural as salt water or fresh water ice can be had in unlimited qualities (immune to climate change as well). (water vapor captures as distilled water)

How many new jobs would be created by bringing everybody up to speed so we are all on the same page and then explore what options are open then. Having a few in power and the rest in the dark is not a relationship that works in the long run if the ones in power wan more for themselves and less for others every time some little bump comes along. (which happens just like clockwork)

If it happens they'll just get transfer payments like the the others so really it's six of one half dozen of the other and they will just whine louder.

Oh, BTW.

I grew up north of North Bay-those dumb hillbillies couldn't organise a dogfight and certainly don't deserve a place @ the federal gubmint trough-which is what this is all about.

Its not really new. This idea has popped up from time to time for at least the past 110 years.

Personally, Im all for it. More than likely wont happen though unfortunately.

I also realize this thread is quite old. However the bloat versus the famine that exists in Ontario has reached an intolerable level. Southern Ontario won't let the north go because the natural resources wealth is more than they can afford to let go. At the same token the transfer payments from Ottawa go mostly to the south, while the north suffers with crumbling infrastructure, unsafe drinking water everywhere, people forced to leave because of lack of investment in the north. Trust me if the north did secede from the south, the south would be screwed. The north would take back it's resource wealth and prosper. It would NOT be a welfare state. The First Nations are already making inroads in terms of business and investment in local solutions unique to the area. The south doesn't have clue one what the north needs to prosper. It certainly isn't the pitiful "chump change" the south determines is suitable welfare. Frankly you can take your tables scraps and shove them sideways. The North is ready to take it's own affairs and run with them. We are ready to be our own, on equal footing with the other provinces in confederation. If that scares you maybe you should get out of your parent's basement and out of armchair politics. Accept the possibility that the North can handle itself! My apologies for any offense to anyone but I for one am done with southern Ontario starving us to death so they can rape the land of it's resources.

Years ago I heard that the Cree were about to vote to secede but that was tabled and no further move was made.

Secede to where? The land they took from the Assiniboine, Dene, Anishnabe, Sioux, Chippewa to name a few?

Parry Sound would get screwed but oh well

Where would the boundary between N & S be located? I WAS thinking the easy solution would be to just extend the 49th parallel to the Quebec border, but upon looking at the map, that might be too far north. Sudbury is a long way south of 49.

Right at the French River where the District of Parry Sound starts... Im just saying this for fun

Geez, Johnny, that would reduce the Province of Ontario to F**k all! I think perhaps it should be boosted north to around Thunder Bay and Timmins.

That's the traditional boundary - altered once so Muskoka could dig into Heritage Fund money. I'd prefer to just make conditions less advantageous for GTA - and give Northern Ontario back its free licence plates because we don't have the option of taking the subway, a passenger train ... or even a transit bus. Make public transit more attractive to Toronto drivers.

Northern Ontario,
Years ago there was a movement to join Northern Ontario with Manitoba to form a province,
We would have had maybe more First Nations and Métis than any other province in Canada.
Injuns would rule!!!
