You think saving $500/year will really make a dent in affording rent, mortgage or a car?

Not so much the $500 but the thought process that goes with it. Called living within your means. Many of us do it. We are not rich and have all thee latest toys but we don't have maxxed out credit cards either. Governments need to learn to operate in the same manner. Making the minimum payment on your mastercard does not mean that you have money to spend.

LOL if an alien invasion happens, with all the latest toys,i do not think they'll win the fight against the invaders,as some documentaries on the subject have shown,we'll have to go low tech to win,no computer virus,no hot shot US Marine pilot. ;)

So I guess the US ought to ramp up its low-tech military spending... just in case!

It sure helps.

Don't get me wrong here. I'm all for eliminating the extremes of wealth and poverty. But I think we also need to define these extremes more clearly.

A person can normally live without an iphone unless it became a necessity for work or something.

Yep, for most of us $500 is a considerable dent- not saying it would put me in the poor house, but it definitely might put me eating beans for that month so I could make all my payments.

.. Or get a room mate and cut that cost in 1/2

You mean share the coffee?

When you get rid of the phone, the iPad, new laptop and cut out the $$ for pot, then yeah - it makes a big dent.

All that's left now is to think about earning some cash and you magically get ahead in life

Do you have proof that all of the protestors have all these items or is it the same source that led you to believe that less 1/2 of working class Americans actually pay taxes?

Completely disagree.

Let's keep in mind that $500 is the total cost. If you have no qualms with someone owning a cellphone, the difference is no more than $250.

And anyone afford something like that on annual basis, but that won't make a dent in the $5,000.00/year bare minimum for rent.

I phones, I pods, I pads...............a real epidemic sickness of the day, ya really got to f**kin' wonder, everyone screaming poverty while walking down the street in a trance with one of these gadgets mindless at their ear and not paying the slightest attention to their surroundings. Is that what peoples' enjoyment has been reduced to? Oops I forgot..............there's drugs too!

Well at least we know some of them do,just look at the videos posted on youtube and on the news, many uses theirs to record what happen.

I'm sure some do. But there is no information to determine what percentage of protestors are just jumping on the wagon for craps and giggles.
